It's just mold.
Wash out with bleach. Get to good glass. Wash out again with lots of acetone to dry all the hidden spots where water will linger.
Wash good because it can come back.

Hello Iboaters

Its been a while but I've been able to put some time into the old girl over the last month. I've actually started putting fibreglass back into the old girl...that means I'v spent a lot of time grinding the old glass ...... If you can see there's a fresh line of glass about a metre back from the bulkhead in the hull...that's all new glass to the bow..basically the glass is now doubled in thickness as there was no biaxial in this boat at all only chopper gun csm i reckon. So here's the transom devoid of plywood and now with 4 layers of glass, 2 csm and 2 double bias (biaxial?) with slightly progressively larger layers each time and a final layer of our Aussie equivalent of your 1708 in a 200 mm or 8 inch band around the entire transom to hull transition. 20200502_172220.jpg

Here's one of the 3 thermolite sheets I got on Friday. Yes I dipped in hard at $430 a sheet for 17mm or 3/4 inch 20200502_172239.jpg

This is the transom boards cut to size and laminated together. As you can see the plan is to run the transom at full height as the motor well is being cut out and an aluminium motor pod going on. Screenshot_20200503-231526_Gallery[1].jpg

I used two layers of resin one on each face of the thermolite board and a layer csm in the middle....the drywall screws are temporary until i install into the boat in the morning...

Is there a good method of joining 2 pieces of thermolite (coosa) to form a 15ft stringer?

Are you sure you want to use coosa for your stringers? It's not all that strong so you will need quite a bit of glass to make a sturdy stringer... maybe consider building hollow stringers and fill with pour in foam or just leave them hollow with limber holes.

My use of the word Coosa may have thrown you.. it's thermolite 3/4". My understanding is that it's much stronger than the same thickness in marine ply with around half the weight... feel free to correct me

Hey Nurseman...nice to see a friendly face!

It cuts like ply but a little harder on your blades. As there is fibreglass in the board respirators are good.

It absorbs resin really well and is everything that it's supposed to be with the added benefit of zero rot ...ever!

I've been asking about how to join 2 pieces of thermoilte to form a single stringer at 15ft and the best I've seen is a 12 to 1 scarf joint in plywood......and Andy from boat works today recently did a test on the adhesion strength with a few resins and i reckon the scarf with thickened resin will be more than sufficent.....

I'm hoping to get the stringers in this month if my work ever lets up.

Cheers
