what size do you have now?
read the numbers on the hub
order the same

depending on a few things you are between a 15p and a 21p. so for us to guess which prop may have been rigged on your boat by its initial dealer would be a guess.

Get the numbers off the old prop. I can give you what’s on my aluminum 18’ bowrider but it’s only a guess

Not something anyone can answer really..without the more details. Best starter for 10…is get the details of the old prop. If you were happy with the way that was. Replace like for like. No such thing as a standard factory prop really

Ok i took the old prop off and its a mercruiser part #48-78122-21 which comes up as a 21 pitch 13 3/4 diameter.

My wide open throttle rpm was about 4300-4400 at 38mph.

Is there anything to gain by going up or down a size? Just curious before i replace like for like.

The prop finder on the mercury website is suggesting a 14.5x19p or a 14.25x21p

You’re not too bad at that to be fair. You’d likely get away with going down to a 19” too. Can’t remember the rpm range for the old 140…but likely to be about 4200-4600 maybe. I’d likely stick with what you have to be honest. Maybe someone can confirm the rpm range on that engine better than I

I would probably drop to 19p myself as I would want a better holeshot

However your RPMs say your good with the 21p

Run numbers on both

Was thinking that myself initially…but not sure if the poster is asking if there is any more speed to be had…50/50 if going to a 19” might gain or lose that. Likely the latter perhaps. Might just put her over her rpm range at the top end too. What’s the rpm range on those older 3.0 engines Scott ? Have a feeling it’s less than the newer 3.0…them being 4400-4800 I think. This older thing I have in mind is a bit less. Or I think it was on my old 79’ 140.

My 1983 3.0 140 hp was 44-4600 at wot. I proped mine to run at the full 4600 when only I was on board. With a couple other fishing friends or the family on board would drop us down to the 4400 range

agree with above, WOT of 4400-4600

I ran my 1984 3.0 at 4800 RPM for short bursts, however tried to keep it at 4600. I ran 3 different props, a 15p, a 17p, and a stainless 19p.

Yeah im mostly wondering if a different size could give me better top end since 38 seems a little slow. My 85hp evinrude did 34 on a heavy fiberglass trihull.

I can't really afford more than 1 replacement prop at the moment so whatever i buy will be all it gets.

I found 2 SST props (15p and 17p) on Craigslist back in the day for $25 for my OMC.

The stainless 19p was a solas

Deals are out there if you look

Speed freaks I see....lol...the fastest boat I ever owned would do just 35 mph, over the 12 years of owning it, I found that I could count on one hand the number of times I could safely run at that speed. In my area the lake is never calm enough to run that speed !!

I think comparing outboard power to inboard power as a like for like…isn’t probably a true comparison. Almost always the case that an identical boat hull that had option to go outboard or inboard…the outboard will be a faster boat, should the HP be anything remotely close to each other. I know of loads of boats that would be relevant to. One example might be a fletcher 17ft boat that’s common over here. If one was powered by a 4.3 v6 mercruiser with 190/205hp and the other with a 200hp v6 Yamaha 2 stroke outboard…the outboard powered version would be in a different league to the inboard for pace. Wouldn’t even be close. The outboard would make the inboard look silly head to head.
I’d say you’re likely doing not too bad at 38mph with an ally prop and that set up. A nice stainless and you’ll likely touch 40 perhaps. But you’re doing well now, I’d think. Not bad at all.

Ok one last question, which is better rubber pressed hub or modular hub?

I almost always boat in rivers where hitting stuff is a common occurrence.

Better top end you need more hp… 38-40 mph is about all you will get on a 18 glass boat 3.0 , very similar to what i had out of my 17 ft sea ray 3.0. Enjoy it for what it is durable and economical…

If hitting stuff is a common occurrence get a spare prop. Modular hub is better in my opinion but more personal preference as either works fine .
