Re: Cops pose as beggars

We are getting off topic a little here....Once again.....It's all about the money!.....Little by little your rights are being legislated right out of existence in the name of "Public Safety"....If P.E.T.A. wanted to outlaw bacon because it can cause cancer, how would most people like that....Do I think children should have restraints?....Yup!...They don't have a choice because they are too young to have one......Do I have to wear one?.... I think that I am old enough to make that choice myself.....What the "Sting" that this topic addresses amounts to is: An end run on the ban on checkpoints in Washington.....We Washingtonians actually like our freedoms.....I would bet the seat belt law has something to do with federal funding......It's about the money, baby!.......JK

They also don't have seatbelts in school buses because, due to shear mass, a school bus does not come to as abrupt a stop in a collision as a car does. It tends to plow through what it hits. The other, and more serious reason is if the school bus catches fire or ends up in water, more kids will die because they will be belted in (in a panic situation kids will freeze up and not be able to unbuckle). It has been proven over and over in real world accidents that most school bus accidents result in minor injury to its occupants. There are also obvious exceptions, but they can't create the perfect protection for every eventuality.

BTW, a seatbelt does keep you in the driver seat, and does increase your ability to control the vehicle. The only way you would think any differently is if you have never been in a violent, high speed loss of control. You can not hold your self in the driver seat and still control the vehicle, unless you have super human strength. Boom, by forcing you to wear a seatbelt, it is a partial guarantee that your kids get to see you for another day. By forcing you to wear a seatbelt it is ensuring that you will be more likely to control your vehicle which just might keep you from killing yourself or someone else. I know its fun to be all stubborn and "I want to do what ever I want" but you live with me and a gazillion other people who just might not want to die because you are in the passenger seat of your spinning car wondering how the heck you will get out of this mess. Its even more fun to tell someone their father died because he was too selfish to just buckle a seatbelt. It isn't always about you, its about your loved ones who wants you to come home every night. Why is this so hard to understand? Besides my overwhelming desire to not die, I buckle up because I know my wife wants to see me every single day.

BTW Medoc, I too have noticed a disproportionate homeless population in the Seattle area. I can't think of a single time when I have been in Seattle when I didn't see bums sleeping in dirty sleeping bags right on the sidewalks or under the overpasses. More so than most other cities I have been too, thats for sure...

Ya know JK, not sure it is off topic as the seat belt thing is about freedom and law etc. Also, the whole thread has seat belt references in there.

Anyway, a libertarian would say let the economics sort it out. I believe if Libertarians were running the country that insurance companies would require seat belts in their policies. Then somebody would say "hey, you can't deny a claim because they weren't wearing a seat belt". And then the insurance company would say, "yes we can, all that matters in this Libertarian society is the $, and we can and will do what we want". And then some up and coming lawyer would think "hey, I can get my wings by pushing this and I can also claim that we are saving children by requiring belts for everyone, Hmmmmmmm". Then someone would listen to this lawyer and pass a law requiring seat belts to protect both the insurance companies and the knuckleheads who think that they shouldn't strap themselves as well as their kids in. So we would end up in the same place.

That's my story and I am sticking to it . . . :D

"QC", money, money, money! :D :p JasonJ., once again you bring up some valid points.....I have survived a high speed collision with no seat belt & walked away with some bruises(rolled a van 5 times after being side swiped).....If you get hit hard enough to lose control of your vehicle, that seat belt a'int gonna help ya, it's already over....It ain't gonna help you keep control in a head on or a t-bone......and you would need to get rear ended real hard to lose control, which happened to me.....I do agree that it is common sense to wear it & I do hear & respect your arguements....I just don't want to be forced to......Once again, our rights are being legislated right out of existence little by little, & I don't like it!
So.....You've been to "Emerald City"......Them bums can downright 'uppity' & I have had to administer a knuckle sanchee more than once....I have absoloutely ZERO tolerence for them!.....JK
P.S. How are you gonna enforce the "must wear" condom law for unmarried folks? :p ;) :p :)

:) Back to the TOPIC!!!!

Heard on the news today that in Texas they are doing the same thing using a Bum to catch people not wearing seat belts!!! When and if you stop to talk to the bum the cop gets you for not wearing a seat belt if that is the case!!!

Law inforcement claims that when they pull over someone for speeding that they get very few people not wearing a seat belt because as the cop approches the car the driver slips the seat belt on!!! I have done that once or twice myself!!! ;)

My bro lives there, and my Ma used to live on Bainbridge island, so I have been there a few times...

Like Fly Rod said, I heard on Paul Harvey today, Officials stated too many possible citations being "missed" because the offenders were putting their seat belts on before the officer reached their doors. Solution, under cover operation targeting seat belt violators. Results over 30 tickets in one two hour operation. Gross gain to county coffers $3,000.00 plus dollars. $1500.00 an hour not bad money, if ya can get it. Tell me again how it’s not in some aspect about the money.

You did, if you think the police don't have more important things to be doing. There are ALWAYS more serious crimes to be fought than seatbelt tickets. ALWAYS! Every second an officer spends doing that is a second they could be using to stop drunk drivers. Or speeders. Or bust meth houses. Or set up a sting selling crack. Etc. And when the cops use underhanded tactics to write more seatbelt tickets, they're just giving the general public another reason to hate them. And then they wonder why people don't like them.

I agree with seatbelt laws completely. If I hadn't been wearing mine when I wrecked my truck I likely would be dead...minimum would have been a very long hospital stay. That's what the fireman who came told me. In either situation, you guys would all be paying my $100,000+ bill. Instead I walked away. But still...fighting other crimes would keep the world a much safer place for everyone.

If all the cops who wasted their time on this seatbelt thing would have instead sold crack to people, arresting everyone who tries to buy and getting them help for their addiction, wouldn't that be a better use of their time?

Re: Cops pose as beggars

This thread has changed my mind about these particular police tactics, honestly. When this was posted I was against what felt to me like entrapment. I have since seen the error of my thinking . . .

I now believe the disguised checkpoint is good, because it will take more criminals off the street than cruising around looking for somebody to do something. Seems way more efficient. Plus it should raise awareness of the seat belt thing as a side bonus. Thank you SCAATY.

Re: Cops pose as beggars

Let's see about that whole respect for cops thing:

How do you feel about speed traps. Especially those that have the speed limits changed on regular bases.

How about the cop dressed as a lady of the evening approaching men to see if they can get a solicitation arrest.

How about hiding for thirty minutes behind a tree to catch a speeder at 10 over.

How about motorcycle cops that sit in median at stop lights to check for seat belts then brag about the crotches of the young girls in short skirts they saw.

Studies of policemen personalities have indicated a tendency to be persons with low esteem back grounds who have a significant need for power. Now that is not the all cops are bad thing but no where near all are good guys. EX: New Orleans Police Force.

Strange indeed is the thinking of those arguing that you are as safe or safer when not wearing a seat belt. That would also come as a surprise to the air transportation industry as well.

It seems to me that you don't think they were wasting their time pestering people not wearing seatbelts. Is that true or not?

I don't think anyone disagrees on the safety part......Just the law that that tells an individual that he has to.... :) ...JK
