Re: Cops pose as beggars

WOW, the perps are squalling. Does this mean we do away with stings altogether to including drug trafficing, money laundering. espionage etc.. After all, by the rationale offered that is not being fair to those perps either and we must be fair and not catch them when they are not on guard. If we have laws that we should not enforce, they should be done away with. Stupid people who do not use required safety equipment run all of our insurance costs up when they get their heads split and hospitals cannot deny treatment whether the fools have insurance or not.

Originally posted by JasonJ:
We have pedestrian crosswalk stings all the time, where plaincloths officers cross the street and people who run the crosswalk get ticketed. The saddest thing of all is that the public is informed this will happen in the paper for several days in advance, to include location, and people still run the crosswalks. Then they complain about tickets.
That's much more reasonable than this...people running crosswalks are somewhat endangering the people walking there.

In highschool they used to bring in drug dogs every now and then to sniff around. They always announced it a week or two in advance, and always found drugs.

Nope. People just drove by. The bum looked in their windows, and then gave a description of the car to stop to a squad car down the road. I haven't been able to find an online story about it, but it was all over the local news. (and I drove by him myself)

Yeah o.k. agitator ....That's some 'sting"......Get them "perps" with no seat belts!...Your 'leap of logic' is dizzying!......Once again about money....Cuts into the insurance companies profit$, and fills the state coffers.....Jason J. has a valid arguement, but .....I would love to see the #'s of citations written, and what they were for.....I think the time could be spent more productivley with the above mentioned on patrol....IMHO.....JK

JasonJ hit the nail on the head. What if the guy who just got pulled for a seatbelt was wanted for beating his girlfriend? The sheriff has been gettin on to us to do more traffic stops and the number of criminals we are arresting as a result is amazing. Our fleet just orderd 8 new slicktop dodge chargers for traffic team no1 is gonna think there is a deputy behind the wheel. :)

Bums and Cops.....They both want our money.

The state takes our money by giving the cops the power to cite us for stupid things and then they turn around and give it to the less fortunate (bums).

Seems to me that persons guilty of far more serious crimes. . . DUI, drug running, no license, no insurance, stolen car, etc. are subject to close scrutiny when stopped to collect a citation for not using the belts.

I can't believe that a hinky druggie or a drunk is going to leave the stop with just a seat belt citation. Maybe not leave the stop in the vehicle they arrived in at all.

Hardly a sting. Doesn't seem any sneakier than a radar trap to me.

Many, if not most arrests on the road for drug posession, DUI, no license, etc. start out as a simple traffic violation stop. No belt is a simple traffic violation.

You're right JB, it probably led to arrests and fines for alot of other crimes, but the same would be true if they spent their time pulling over cars that are actually endangering others on the road. Put that bum in a cop car and have him drive back and forth on the same road, he would have caught just as many people, except it would be for more dangerous infractions.

And he wouldn't have pissed off the general public by deceiving them...if I was a cop, my first goal would be to give the public a good perception of me.

So littering and assault are okay.... so long as you drive a car and wear new shoes? Your thought process is wrong, very wrong.

I'm glad our officers are out there helping people.

Sounds like the only idiot is.... well.

Why waste a cops time on a victimless crime, just place a video surveillance camera in an appropriate place end start mailing out $101.00 dollar tickets. BTW if any one thinks the government passed those seat belt laws to "Protect You" or "Ensure your Safety" think again, the only reason those laws were passed is because the insurance companies paid for them via lobbyist. If the government were truly concerned with vehicle safety there would be a national helmet law.

its interesing on are parkways which are patroled by state police there favored method is road blocks at on ramps

i wear my seat belt and keep current stickers on my car go figure i ALWAYS get waved through ;)

NOW whats really amazing is the amount of tickets being given out to cars who DONT have a saftey sticker or insurance

now for what ever reason the folks who dont bother with those small rules things tend to break the BIGGER RULES ALSO

in reality at least here getting pulled over is about as likely as winning the lottery unless your amoung those who just need to do REALLY STUPID DRIVEING TRICKS

tommays

Hey! Seatbelts are simply a choice. It's none of anybodies business what I do in the confines of my own car as long as it doesn't endanger anyone else.

If it works for homosexuals in their bedroom (or anywhere else for that matter) who are at considerably higher risk for HIV and suicide, why can't it apply to me, inside my car with seatbelts, huh?

Re: Cops pose as beggars

Down here in the Orlando area, we have a real problem with speeders and red light runners. Last year the Kissimmee Police setup a few "stings" at intersections to help catch red light runners and blatant speeders. Once they dressed as a bum (with a jean jacket that said cops suck). Another time, they played good ole boys in a broken down old pickup. They gave out a substantial number if tickets.

I have no problem with the unorthodox tactics to try and help the problem down here.

Different violations, not wearing a seat belt is not likely to cause an accident like speeding or running a stop sign or red light.

Exactly what I was going to say. I have no problem with police finding sneaky ways to catch people breaking the law, but I do have a problem with them wasting their time on things like seatbelt violations when they could be stopping much worse crimes. Maybe if they run out of crimes to fight, and have a surplus of money and police officers it would be ok to have seatbelt stings, but I don't think that is going to happen anytime soon. ;)
