Okay. 7 days later and the EasyPoxy is harder than it was a week ago before I put on the last coat.

I have to press my fingernail on it with pressure to leave a mark. In 3 to 4 days I'll flip the hull to put it on the trailer.

As it stands right now, I am very pleased with the EasyPoxy, its color and luster. Will post the results after rolling it on the trailer.

Regarding comments on mixing of brands. The EasyPoxy Technical Bulletin says this rearding painting bare fiberglass...

"The entire surface to be painted, regardless of age, must be thoroughly washed with 95 Fiberglass
Dewaxer to remove all traces of mold release agents and wax. Sand the gelcoat with 80- 120 grit paper to a dull, frosty
appearance; solvent clean to remove residue. If the surface is in excellent condition, proceed with the first finish coat of
Easypoxy."

No mention of primer. Just DeWax and sand the surface then paint. The make up of old gelcoat/fiberglass is of unknown origin. Not trying to make a big deal out of it but I'm just sayin.

Hi. August was my best month since 2008. :)

.....and cant you paint the sterring wheel yourself?

It looks like Mooneyes will be making ones that are good substitutes. If interested I put the info here.

Yea. that is what I am thinking, also. EasyPoxy was made for big Yachts so I figure what I did to my hull before is more than adequate.

I just flipped the boat over today. Thanks to unaccountable friend I did it my &*@# self.

Its about 9 days since the last coat of EasyPoxy and I have some touching up to do.

I realize that under normal circumstances the hull will not have this much friction with other objects but some of the paint scratched off, mostly along the path of the bunks. The primer coats underneath are perfectly fine.

Not any really major damage but a little touching up is needed. None of it is visible unless one gets under the trailer to look anyway.

The worse spot is along the side edge near the bow but it's an easy touch up fix.

I guess EasyPoxy is alright but I presumed it would be more solid than it is.

I can still press my fingernail into it but not as much as a week before.

This isn't bottom paint, formulated for topside, and now see why. Good thing this is a tri-hull because the vast majority of what I painted can't be seen.

I am sure I will not have a problem with the sides, however. They come in contact with nothing. I just need to get fenders over the trailers wheels so rocks don't wreck the paint.

Re: Concerns with EasyPoxy from Pettit. Please read.

Its been weeks since I finished the electric blue paint. I masked off the areas for the white with low adhesion fine line and painters tape, applied two coats and days later carefully peeled off the tape. Some of the blue just peeled right off with it.

Not only that but I found a spot where I accidently rolled white on the blue so I started taking it off and the third layer of blue peeled off the second.

What did I do wrong?

Perhaps it is just in these spots that have adhesion problems? I followed all of Pettit's instructions.

Back when I was on the blue paint job I got some drops of it on the primed area where the white was to go. I couldn't even sand that off. It seemed to have soaked into the primer. Now this!?!?! I don't get it. Looks like I have a perpetual touch up boat. :(

What do you guys think?

You need to use the green tape, and leave it on as short an amount of time as you can.

I used both. Neither was on for more than 3 - 4 days.

Maybe those spots were the blue came off was where I pushed the tape on too hard (??).

Ahh well. These are easy touch ups but am still surprised its pealing off as easy as it is.

Ok, then I will return to my previous assertion which is that Easypoxy is complete and utter sh!t paint.

You may be correct, sadly. We'll see what happens after a 6 month cure time and when I trailer this down the road next year.

Or perhaps it was that I pushed the tape down to hard in those spots when I ran my finger along it for the last time. However, it pulled up and looks like blue gold leaf on the tape. It didn't peel off beyond where the tape stuck on it, however.

I may as well have tinted bilgekote dark blue, painted it on and buffed it smooth.

Hello Darren...

Its one of two things I can think of..

1. Poor prep. .. or

2. Solvents from the paint attacked the blue through the tape.

I dont know what tape you used..there are different grades of tape.

I would have used Fine line and just pressed down on the paint edge ( not the whole surface of the tape.

I know the heart sinking feeling you had when removing the tape.. ouch..

I'm thinking that also. It was professional custom auto tape. http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/ktape.aspx

I don't have those feelings any more. Being I live in North Eastern Michigan I have become accustom to day to day disappointment and bad things happening. This did not phase me.

I just got off the phone with Pettit with some of my own questions. I asked about taping timelines. The guy said to remove any tape as soon as the paint is tacky...so depending on climate conditions, anywhere from an hour to a few hours max. I think your problem is the tape was left on too long. I know this is an old thread but was wondering if you had any updates on your paint curing.

That guy from Pettit doesnt know what he's talking about...unless he was talking about leaving High tack or el cheapo tape on there for a period of time ( like a few days ).

Re: Concerns with EasyPoxy from Pettit. Please read.

I've been painting boats for 40 years. I first used EasyPoxy in 2005 and can truly say it was the best topside paint I ever used. Very hard coating and quite durable in all respects. Five years of use and it still looks like new yet.

They call it "epoxy", but that's really a misnomer. It's not a 2-component coating so there is no chemical reaction curing, per se. Simply solvent loss. It may have cured epoxy resins in it, but its not a true epoxy.

Some things come to mind......curing a coating in the sunlight is not a wise idea. It should have been done indoors. If sanding was a problem between coats, it wasn't cured long enough to put on another coat. When I did my job, one coat covered it 99%. I did 2 coats, but I can't imagine the need for a third.

Good info thanks. I'm painting mine in the garage so everything should be fine.

Hey Doc. How long do you leave your tape on for?

As little time as possible..

And get the tape off as soon as possible.

I dont press down my tape Fully untill application time :) .

When masking off over Freash paint ( like a boot stripe or second color ) I wait to tape untill the LAST available Workable time I can tape/mask before spray....then wait untill I can at least take off the film/masking.

The fine line can wait till the next day before I take that off when the coats are still semi-flexible ( not chipping ).

Its an application to application/product thing.. if it was gel..then pull the tape as soon as your done cleaning your gun..

Kinda a loaded question here...
