Re: Complete Rebuild of 1972 StarCraft SS

I have like a 2400 psi gas pressure washer... do you think it would work for stripping paint off a boat? I was planning on just sanding what's there and painting over it?? Is there a huge advantage of going down to bare? Just curious...

Is your pressure washer heated? You have to get to 230 degrees. In my case it's better since my boat had so many layers of paint most of them came off ridiculously easy, factory paint gave me a hard time though. But if the boat has been painted multiple times in the past I'd take off as much as I can, id rather do it right once, then have to go back and redo because I got lazy.

PS sorry for any typos I'm using my phone, comp is broken at the moment

Ya i used a pressure washer too.. but to clean very little paint stipping. I think you need to be somewhat careful about the pressure you apply to the alum... as it may warp the alum. Im not certain of this but I do remember reading about this in someones resto thread awhile ago.. just wish i knew which one...LOL.

I just didn't think a power washer would strip paint like that... I will probably just clean with power washer and do the painstaking hand sanding. No pain no gain, right? But as usual I am putting the cart before the horse... I don't even have my project starcraft yet!!!

Has anyone made a home made Bimini top?

Was considering making my own.

Hey L2, I am trying to steal a 72 SS right now, do you know if the glass in the window is actual glass or if it's plexiglass, or anyone else who might know?
Thanks

Thanks ez, I have a deal where son is selling for sick Dad, she said he thought it was plexiglass, definitely original frame, seems like it would be rare for all glass to be broke out and replaced?

L2 that is interesting... this guy claims it's original too and I tend to believe him because there are many original features on this boat, other than some odd homemade seats, nothing else has been hacked which I really like. I am working on figuring out how to start my own thread because I am about to buy this sweet rig!!!

You can easily buy that plexiglass at home cheapo and replace it, it will look brand new, will never break. And it weighs a whole lot less than glass

That's what I was thinking, we use some plexiglass here at work for machines that is solid and looks like glass until you knock on it...
Well guys I started my own thread, I am zeroing in on a 1972 SS, very similar to L2's!!! I plan on watching L2 closely because I will be way behind, I will most likely use mine (if it floats) until later in the Fall and then start the tear down in the Winter. Here is my link, tell me what you think...

Re: Complete Rebuild of 1972 StarCraft SS

So... I am ready for paint. Pictures coming tomorrow.

However, after reading every topic, and everyone's suggestions I am still clueless what to use to prime/paint.

Everyone keeps throwing out so many different combinations of primer ( epoxy, etching, bare metal primer ect. )

Can someone please, please break this down to me in english.

If I do the following, will I fail?

Option 1:

Self Etching Primer
Bare Metal Primer
Urethane Top Coat

Option 2:

Epoxy Primer
Urethane top coat.

Is it necessary that I use a self etching primer?

Please just explain this to me like you are teaching literature to a foreign student.

it is necessary to use self etching primer on bare aluminum. From what I understand, only a light coating of the stuff if necessary. You aren't looking to hide or fill anything with it.
