Re: clarify the $100 boat paint job please!
what do you all think? i have a couple of questions in there:
To prep the boat:
1. Wash boat (scrub hard)
2. Acid wash white vinegar/water (1:1) the bare aluminum areas
3. SEM high build primer bare metal spots (1 can $15)
4. Remove decals with power wheel eraser
5. Wet sand? with 3M pad whole boat
6. ?Acid wash white vinegar/water (1:1) the whole boat?
Prep done?
Prime the boat:
1. 2 coats of Primer = 1 1/2 quarts WHITE CLEAN METAL PRIMER (2 Quarts $20)
2. Wet sand? with 3M pad in between coats
3. 4 hours dry IF the temps are 70? or higher. Below that 6-8 hours
4. ?clean boat after sanding?
Prime Done?
Paint Time!
1. Formula: 2 cups Paint (2 quarts for 3-4 coats Rust stop or Rustoleum $20) , 1/4 cup of Reducer (MS and Acetone 1:1), 1 oz of Hardener (Wesco Paint)
2. Let mix cook for 30 minutes
3. Use Roll n' Roll method
4. Wet sand? 3M pads between coats
5. 4 hours dry IF the temps are 70? or higher. Below that 6-8 hours
Done?
Stripe:
1. If your stripe it you will need to use the 3M Fine Line Tape. If you don't the paint will bleed under the tape and NOT look good. You would paint the Base color first and let it cure for at least a month and then do the stripe.
2. Prep and sand
3. Repeat above process for paint
Basically you need to Prep your raw alum for the primer ( however you choose to do it is up to you ( I have given a step by step guide in the top stickies. If you want to do it this way is up to you again )).
After you Prime I would suggest you only dry sand. There are too many variables in the wetsanding aspect of paint jobs.
You Dont touch ANYthing with your hands after the Prime coat has been applied ( Oils in your hands and such ). Wear latex gloves or cotton gloves if needed.
As far as coat over coat times .. I have no clue after talking with the reps.
Wash her really well with warm sudsy water after the acid wash. Don't forget to wipe down with Acetone after each sanding. I would sand the boat initially with 180 grit sandpaper. the 3m pad is for between coats of primer and paint. Just to knock the nubs down if any. I always wet sand followed by a rinse with warm clean water. Dry and then final wipedown with acetone.
Remember Woody .. Acetone is a Solvent .. not a wipe for Paint. Gelcoat is Great to wipe down/clean with Acetone .. but Primers can be attacked with acetone ( especially Acrylics or Thanes ). Be careful when using Acetone to clean Primer or Paint preps ! A good wipe with an alcohol or windex type is better than a Solvent. Safer too
tommays, ALL of your work IS of PRO quality. As I've said MANY times, The proof is in the Puddin and your Puddin is PRO! It's very hard for me to hear people tell other people they won't be able to do quality work and they should PAY a so called PRO to do it for them. Momma always said, "Can't never did nuthin, cuz he never tried!!"
Momma always said "Learn from your mistakes and learn more from others mistakes"
Pros dont grow on trees man .. there is a reason why we are here to help. There are mistakes done out of ignorance .. and there are mistakes learned from experience.
Peace man..
