Cigarette Butts - out the window!

From JB's post about wildfires in Texas the following was stated:

When I first moved to the DFW area from west Texas, I was horrified to see cigarette butts flying out car windows. That is a definite no no where I was from, but I still see it regularly here.
I see this all the time and it gets me mad. First of all, smoking is a nasty habit that has no health benefits. If I throw a gum wrapper out of my truck window, I'm pretty sure it is littering. Wouldn't it also be considered littering if somebody throws out a cigarette butt?

Sure, they are small, but they add up. Look at the side of the road at any major intersection (preferably when you are stopped at a red light).

I realize that there are way more important things to worry about; however, on the way to my dad's house for Christmas this past weekend, I saw 4 or 5 lit butts carelessly flicked out the window onto the side of the road.

Sorry for the rant, it's just one of my pet peeves.

Im right there with you James. Nothing like having a cigarette butt bounce off your windshield after the sun goes down to get your attention.

I could care less if anyone wants to smoke, they should be responsible for their mess when they are through.

Well, it does, but there are certainly better alternatives. Turns out nicotine can be a pretty good antidepressant. But like I said, there are safer ways to address the issue of depression.

I suspect that a lit butt violates Texas' harsh anti-litter law. Those signs that say, "Don't mess with Texas" are dead serious.

One of our least popular residents got busted for tossing an empty 6 pack. They fined him $250 for open liquor in the vehicle and $500 for littering.

If they could prove that you started a fire in a drought? Somebody would be sent out for a rope.

"They fined him $250 for open liquor in the vehicle and $500 for littering."

So potentially driving while under the infulence of alcohol is more socially acceptable that throwing litter out the window of you car, interesting.

Wanna hear some poetic justice? A few years ago some genius flicked out a lit butt out of his pick-up window which appropriatly landed in the first of four of those big round hay bails on his trailer. FOOOF!

Get's better.

Darwin then pulls over on I-240 and stops under an overpass. the blaze and smoke blocks the interstate AND the overpass for hours.

He was given several "awards" by the Memphis City Police for his actions.

spots

I use my ashtray as to not create any road rage and not to litter. I sure wish people would use care in getting rid of their used gum as well. Nothing more appetizing than to sit in a drive thru and see gum all around your car. In the bushes, parking lot, and sometimes on the drive thru window. At least butts don't stick to your shoes or clothes. Gum also contains more germs than what a butt has. They both are nasty IMO.

Either one of the two is bad when not disposed of correctly.

For a butt to hit someones windsheild tells me someone is following a bit to closely to the car in front of them.

Landscaper told me that actually cigarette butts are not as bad as their reputation would suggest. The paper and unburnt tobacco is biodegradable and leaves only the fiberglass filter. He said that the filter is an excellent absorber/retainer of moisture and actually is good to have in the mix. Great for potting soil.

But they are unsightly.

  even when i was a smoker i never threw my butts on the ground. my wife would get a little mad sometimes when i would forget to empty my pockets of the old butts but better than throwing them in the lake or on the ground. i never ever would toss them out the window when driving. any way its been 8 almost 9 months (and 35 pounds) since i had to worry about that anyway. :D

Throwing butts out the window here will get you a $200 fine.

There are also signs that read "Don't leave Your Butts on the Beach".

Re: Cigarette Butts - out the window!

I drove a convertable for awhile and had a discarded butt come flying into the car with me and land on the passenger seat. Talk about scary. The guy ahead of me flicked it out his sunroof.

Next lite, I pulled up next to him and asked if he dropped something and then flicked the butt into his driver window. God that felt good.

Re: Cigarette Butts - out the window!

I think in Calif tossing trash is something like $250 the first time, $500 after that. Tossing a lit butt is $2500 the first time.

In Japan you don't see butts on the ground. When someone is done smoking, they bend down and put out the cig then drop the butt back into the cig pack and discard it later.

Re: Cigarette Butts - out the window!

the new smoking bans that are passing in many areas come with an un-intended side consequence too....since people can't smoke inside, there are even more butts outside now.

Re: Cigarette Butts - out the window!

They ought to put a quarter deposit on each cigarette butt. You return the butts, you get your dollars back. You want to pitch them, then some homeless guy can get a decent meal. Oh, and do away with the fiberglass filter. That way they can degrade properly in a week or 2. Everyone wins.

Nav
