Re: Cigarette Butts - out the window!

My neighbor was not charged with DUI, Colorado. Apparently the empty 6 pack was a left over from the night before.

Texas is not friendly to DUI drivers, either. I would like them to be even less friendly.

JB..

Not implying anything at all with regard to your neighbour. Just thought it interesting that fines for littering seem more sever than those of alcohol related issues. Both, to me, seem equally important at the very least. Absolutly understand the point of not flicking lite cigarettes out the window considering the current circumstances in Texas. It happens on rare occasion here as well. Fortunately for us they are contained to small grass fires between the asphalt and culvert.

My appologizes if I had offended you. None was intended.

Cigarrette butts out the window... one of my biggest pet peeves. I don't have a lot of complementary things to say about smokers in the first place and that type of thing just makes smokers as a group look worse.

Honestly, I have nothing against people who smoke. What I hate profusely is the mess smokers make. Go to where smokers hang out outside an office building... butts everywhere. They definitely work less than non-smokers with all the "Cigarette breaks" throughout the day.

As a smoker I must agree. They make ashtreys for a reason, people should use them.
I will not use the ashtrey in my car because it makes the car smell worse than when simply smoking in it. I do however carry a pop bottle for my butts, put the lid back on and throw it away when I get to a trash can.
I won't smoke in my family car, my van, or my house because it makes it stink and turns everything yellow. I won't smoke around my kids for their health. I wish I had never started, and have tried for years to quit.
I do write teckets for people who throw butts out of the window. They almost never stick in court though if the driver fights it, it is hard to find the evidence and prove which butt is theirs. I especially hate those who open their door at stop lights and dump their ash trey on the ground.

I used to roll my own-completely biodegradable and don't stay lit unless you're actually smoking them. Gone to mush and washed away with the next rainfall so I used to throw them out the window after they went out.

For a butt to hit someones windsheild tells me someone is following a bit to closely to the car in front of them.
If its thrown out the sunroof, or you are in the next lane, it will happen.

I overheard an arguement about this one day in the Wally World parking lot. The clown that did it said he was providing job security for the person who would clean it up.

Nothing worse than having a lit but hit you when your riding a motorcycle. It happens to me every once in a while. Once in my youth it happened. Without going into detail I would be willing to bet that person never does it again :p

I bet if you ask 100 smokers if they throw their butts on the ground, 100 of them would say "NO!". So I guess they must be coming from non-smokers or outer space.

They let you smoke in your car deputydawg? around here if your even caught smoking in uniform they give you points on your file and if they already don't like you its off to court security with the old guys who are just to tired for the road and the other disiplin problems

No offense taken, Colorado. Just needed to clarify.

I do think Texas is tough on drinking drivers, even tougher than on litterers. Many DUIs go to jail, lose license to drive, etc.

I ride motorcycles, I got a couple butts thrown at me from a car ahead of me, it's not a fun experience.

Yes Gatorboater, we get to smoke in our cars. I think it is coming that the county board will tell us not on duty at all, but we will ignore that policy too. The Sheriff still fights changes. He thinks that would interferr with our personal life too much.
I try not to smoke in puiblic in uniform too often, it doesn't look professional. I will smoke in my cruiser in the country, but not in the towns.
By the way, the reason we get away with it even though county policy says no smoking in county owned vehicles is we have take home cruisers. It is issued to me for 5 years, nobody else drives it. Boss says since nobody else drives it than it doesn't matter.
Until just a few years ago we had to buy our own patrol cars. Finally got them convinced that making $18,000 a year and buying our own cars just didn't work out well.

The cigarette breaks thing just kills me........Why does smoking entitle you to a break every couple of hours? Yeah everyone can have a break but somehow those who smoke seem to think they "need" one more than anyone else. Where I work it seems like smokers take twice as many breaks not to mention the smoke smell follows them in as they go back to work dealing with customers. (not all smokers are this way obviously but the majority seem to be)

For the record I dont smoke cigarettes, but smoke cigars every once in awhile......but its a social thing (smoke one while drinking a beer with buddies or playing poker)

Re: Cigarette Butts - out the window!

WOW they used to make you buy your own patrol cars? I have been know to smoke in mine but i'm on nightshift and my zone is in the middel of nowhere. Since i'm a firstyear rookie i've got an old 97 CV with 112,000 miles on it so i'm gonna be the last guy to drive it, they sell em at 120,000. I actually do have the oldest car in the agency they pass em down by mileage and mine was a LT's car who never went on the road. I would never tose a cig out the window all i need is for some1 to call on that and OPS would send me packing. At 18,000 how can you even afford to smoke???? you need to come down here man first year deputy starts at 35,000 with a 2 year degree 30,000 without and its only one and a half hours to the east or west coast. The only part that sucks is the price of housing but i'm the resident deputy in an apartment complex so all i have to pay is phone, i'm savin for a house.

As I get older and wiser I use the ash tray in the work truck. I wish people would keep there trash in there cars. I gaurantee, going down the roadways you'll notice more people trash than smokers trash.

Only one thing in this world worse than a smoker is an ex-smoker.

Different type of litter, but just as bad... saw a couple of young kids throw an entire McD's bag full of garbage out their window.

Saw another couple of teenagers walk out of circle K store, take wrapper off of a candy bar (large wrapper), just dropped and kept walking.

It just shocks me.

Re: Cigarette Butts - out the window!

This is from a smokers point of view.

deputydawg
I thought I was the only one who did that.
I use Styrofoam cups with water in them.
Change them out everyday and always have the window down. Clean and Febreze once a week.
My MIL often goes places with us and she is so sensitive to any kind of smoke that she doesn't even use her own fireplace. She just remarked the other day thats its amazing that I actually smoke in the van.
We can call that part tips on how to not make your car smell like a ashtray! :)

Butts or flicking ashes out a window... Grew up in a logging town.. Good way to get your own Butt kicked. Big NO NO in my book. Glad they are fining for both now. (wa state)

Butts on the ground! No GD reason for it! Ticks me off big time!
Field strip the darn thing and put it in your pocket! No brainer

But I see all three all the time.

Smoke breaks at work on someones payroll. HaHa
Would fire him/her on the spot!
On break and someone smokes.. get over it. It's their time.

When we go out fishing, be it a small lake for Bass or the Puget Sound for REAL fish.. we always use a pop can for Butts..

My .02

Link

Re: Cigarette Butts - out the window!

I always put my butts in an empty Dr. pepper bottle back when I used to smoke. I started off using the ashtray but like someone else said, it really stinks up the car bad. Plus, it sucks digging through all the ashes trying to get one more quarter for the daily Dr. Pepper!
I would be fine with throwing them out the window under 3 conditions.
1 THROW it down so that it doesn't go in someones window.
2 It better be out before you throw it.
3 it has a biodegradeable filter.

Edit, Just thought I'd add, I'm not an envirowako by any stretch, but it does look bad when all those filters start piling up.
