Wrapping up another boating season. Someone turned off the heat in south central PA…..it’s time to start looking at sewing machines for vinyl. Leaning heavily toward the consew that WOG mentioned. It has a lot of features and add ons the others don’t. Also have an oil leak on my starboard trim/tilt cylinder. It looks like the steel line from the manifold is leaking. Until then crossing my fingers for one more outing before we draw the curtain on this year.

Well, this thread continues. The vinyl upholstery on this 1990 Chap is original and has lasted quite long. Over time, vinyl begins to lose its supple feel and starts to harden. Many of the seams begin to fall apart and the whole interior shows its age. Early in this rebuild I replaced all the rotten wood backers, but knew someday this boat would need new vinyl. The first step in this endeavor was buying a good industrial sewing machine. I purchased a machine from the FB Market Place off of a lady who used to own an upholstery business. This is a Chandler 406RB.






This is very similar to the Consew I was looking at, in fact it appears Chandler is the parent company of Consew. At least they share the same website. The Chandler 406RB is a walking foot with needle feed. This one has a clutch motor that I intend to change to servo. The table is also a little warped, so I’m changing that to butcher block.

Got the servo motor and a thread stand today. Went with the Consew Chinesium servo instead of the other brand Cinesium servos. It’s amazing how much smaller and lighter this DC motor is over the same hp clutch motor.

Finished the swing away hitch on the trailer. Now I won’t get my feet wet when I launch, and it still fits in the garage.

My trailer is like that. I haven't had my feet wet in 3 years. I went on my buddies boat. you cant put his in or out unless you walk in the water.

I like the folding tongue. I have a very long tongue on mine so I can launch it without getting wet. I see the sewing machine was made in Baldwin NY, which is on the South Shore of Long Island. If you're a motor head ever hear of the specialty cars that were sold by Baldwin-Motion? They were a collaboration between Baldwin Chevrolet and Motion Performance, located on Sunrise Highway and they would sell things like 427 Camaros, Novas and Chevelles when GM would only give you a 396. Those were the days!

Nothing yet. I have a couple small upholstery projects I want to get done before I put needle to vinyl. Several other mechanical projects have taken precedence right now. When family have things that need repaired, I’m usually the one that fixes them, lol.

Frozen water toys take precedence when it’s cold, however I got the sewing machine brought up to my standard. Replaced the laminate top with butcher block and added a servo motor. Now it looks nice enough to move out of the garage and into the house. I’ll have a few projects to complete to get used to this machine before buying vinyl.

Hi Chuck,
I enjoyed reading your build thread. I just bought an identical boat. Same year, model and colors. The only difference (before your modifications) is we have different seating arrangement options.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to watching your vinyl project.
By the way, I'm also in Pennsylvania and also could benefit from new vinyl. Mine is usable, but it's a little crispy and has a few tears. Maybe you can sell me your mistakes
