Re: changing color of boat (winter project) best way to do it?

YD- I thank you for your lenghty post on how to gel coat. However, i do not have a garage unfortunately. My boat is shrinkwrapped at the moment outside. I shouldve corrected myself and said early spring project. Anyhow i expect if i do use a gun I might aswell shoot it in a garage, so my spray method is out the door.

Wood- Again, I thank you too for your insight. I will end up going with your method with the sand, prime and paint method. It's cheaper and with the situation I am in, I have no choice onto do it this way. Unless I do all the prep work and send it to the paint shop (but of course $$$ is always the issue when someone else does it).

Red is a HARD color to paint!!! Be prepared for multiple coats. With the Roll and Tip method Multiple thin coats are FAR better than Thick coats. Patience is a virtue and again to get great results it's all in the prep work. Make sure and use the correct primer recommended by the mfg of the final paint you choose. You might want to take a look at Pettit Easypoxy. Lot's of guys have used it with great results here on iBoats. YD Like the AwlGrip and Interlux and they ARE Great products. A little more pricey but sometimes you get what you pay for but... like a said, since it is above the water line I think you would get GREAT results with the Pettit Easypoxy. Investigate it and make your own decision.

Oh yeah, It comes in Red!!!!

Hello winter..

My post was multi on how to :) not just gel but paint as well..from prime to topcoat. There are a few "little steps" that would be advised for both processes that were not posted by me..I cant write or tell everything at one time..sorry. ( I could make a thread for both gel and paint I guess ).

I was just saying I have done gel sprays in a garage b4. But..I have also done them not only in a back yard ( I was thinking your going to be indoors when you said "winter project" ;) ) but also full 40 foot gel sprays while the boat was swinging from an anchor in the outer harbor.

Updated point is you can spray gel outside if you like ( make a tent if you have to controll your overspray ).

You can use an el cheapo gun as I have stated from HF or local auto stores with the largest tip you can get ( high end spray guns you can buy with specific tip/needle/nozzle size .. you dont need these guns ).

2.5 should work for you protree..as long as your reduction is enough.

Im not into Interlux as someone suggested..just Gel/Awlgrip/Imron/PPG/ChromaPremier..

IM GOING TO GIVE YOU A SOUND ADVISE HERE !!!!

You want Red..thats fine and good..but two things..

1. As I have allready stated above Red IS more Transparent then other colors ( meaning it will NOT cover as well as lets say white.. I know this is hard to believe..you would think red would be like 2 coats done from its darker color..but sadly NO it wont ).

2. VERY important with red paint is to make SURE you have your primer coat as Light as you can get it ( White would be good Yellow even better ) and Consistant in Coverage. You dont want to have some burn through here and there in your primer..you want the base/primer to be ALL the SAME color ! If you have the proper base then you Might be able to brush/roll/tip in fewer coats without it being noticible.

Good luck and keep the updates rolling. Ask away for any questions that come up.

Black covers the base more but shows waves in the hull and every sand scratch. It will also show like a sore thumb if you scratch it after you paint it.

I didnt mean to sway you away from Red m8...

If you like Red .. thats way cool cool.. its the prep..

Follow the reply I stated above and you should be fine man..

Any color you want it..you will be fine

As long as the primer coat is ONE consistant base color with red ( reds are touchy is all Im saying .. no reason to switch colors because of the warnings ).

You should allways have the same primer coat no matter what Color you wish.

Hope I'm not hi-jacking this, but I'm going to be doing the exact thing, but I plan to go black instead of red.

My question is how do you mask?
I assume you would want to mask the area to sand, so you don't sand part of the hull your not going to paint. But, then you will have a rough tape edge, so do you pull that tape and apply new tape and hope it's on the exact same line when you are ready to paint.
Or do you forgo tape all-together until it's paint time.

Dont ever spray up to the tape .. paint or gel..or anything :) your blend will be .. lets say unfavorable ..
