Re: Celebrity Talk

Yessss.....I love my 18 ft. 1990 V6 4.3L 262cid Celebrity. It was my parents and I took it over when they could not start it anymore. I rebuilt the engine and also tore out the floor and stringers. Redesigned the stringers and installed a new floor design, all JBL speakers and amp, and tinted the windows black to finish off that look. I love it but two weeks ago it stalled right before I was going to trailer it. I cant get it started. Its an ignition problem...thunderbolt IV seems a little shaky to me. I have read so many treads on it and still can't figure it out. Heres my baby.

If anyone has any ideas, I would love to chat.

Thanks

Dags

Celebrity Talk

Good afternoon!

I'm a new boat owner, as of April 2012. 1987 Celebrity Bowrider.

My family and I spent our first summer just enoying the boat on the water and learning...learning alot, sometimes by accident. I'm the second owner of the boat (350 hrs when purchased) in which the boat itself is in good condition. Last summer I created a list of "things" I wanted to add or fix during the winter months. I've listed my top three below and have done some research on each but I'm always looking for various opinions.

1. Oxidation - would like to remove as much as possible any suggestions on the chemicals and tools I should purchase?
2. Teak - My boat has the teak package in which the sun was not a friend. The teak is in good condition (even the swim platform) but needs to be sanded and refinished. Any pointers with restoring teak?
3. CD/Radio - The original wires and speakers exist but I'm planning on replacing the speakers, wires and install a CD/Radio. I'm debating on connecting to the one and only battery on the boat or purrchasing a smaller battery just for the radio. With one battery I'm worried about being on Lake Michigan (on a calm day) and draining the battery and not being able to start the boat. Maybe I'm worrying too much. Suggestions?

Thank you,

DK

Re: Celebrity Talk

A little update here: At the beginning of summer last year (2012), we sprung a fairly bad leak with a rusted out/corrosion filled block plug. We also found out that we had a bent rod, so, it was time for a new block or sell the boat the way it was. We decided to buy a new block and replaced a few things on the '92 engine while it was out of the boat. So far, it's been well worth the money we spent (not much, but enough). We will have this Celebrity for a number of years to come!

Here is our '92 Celeb 200 Cuddy we bought in April '09. It has a 5.7L engine w/Mercruiser Alpha 1 Drive. Just a couple of months ago, we had new Risers and Manifolds put on. Compared to the '89 Invader we had in Colorado (Denver metro south), this boat really can kick butt in speed! We've had it up to 28mph and we thought we were FLYING across the water! We are in our early 60's, so 28mph for us was FAST!!

Re: Celebrity Talk

1. Oxidation: A buffer, plenty of arm strength and a very good compound and wax. For a quick fix, we did a "vasoline" job on our boat. Unfortunately, the boat is stored outside and when it rains, the oxidation can come back.
2. Teak: We use Interlux Premium Teak Oil on our teak.
3. CD/Radio: After we bought our Celebrity, we had a new Fishfinder and CD/Radio put in. Both were connected to the battery, but very seldom used the fishfinder and only used the CD/Radio when tied up and relaxing on the boat. As far as we could tell, the battery was never affected, BUT, early last year we had a dual-battery set-up done. The boat came with a battery, but my wife bought us a new one for my birthday. We took the older battery out of the boat and put it in an outside closet at home. After doing some research, I found out that having two batteries onboard, connected to a dual-battery switch, gives boaters more confidence on the water. So, one is a "house" battery (older one) and one is for starting/running (new one). Just gotta remember to turn the switch to "off" when not on the water, so batteries don't go dead!

Good luck on the manuals for the boat itself. For engine and outdrive, they should be readily available. Don't fret the lack of a manual for the boat itself. I always wanted one for my 21', but I recently picked up a 268SC, and it had every document with it. The boat manual is mostly generic, I didn't find one page specific to the boat I had... I have manuals for all the installed items, appliances, everything, but the OEM manual was mostly a waste of paper, unless you have never owned/driven/or been in a boat :)
