Carpet replacement: Lid/Compartment question

Okay, i'm replacing carpet for the first time on an '06 Lowe Stinger Aluminum boat and need help with lids/compartments. I've removed nearly all of the carpet on the boat but am concerned about removing many of the compartment lids that don't allow access to hinge fasteners from behind. I am running into this around my livewell (livewell is in the way), another lined storage compartment (bin is in the way), and a rod-holder compartment (appears to be an aluminum wall in the way). If i take the hinges off these compartments, i'm thinking i would have to glue them back on and later attach the lids once the glue has dried. Does anyone have advice on the best way to proceed? Should i go with the Glue method (preferred at the moment), leave the hinges there altogether, figure out how to remove the livewell and compartment that appear to be glued in, or drink another 6-pack and worry about it some other time?

Also, would this be easier if i had a tool to use rivets or would i still need to access from behind? Thanks!!

You Don't have a good quality rivet gun,..??

Posting pictures of your boat and problem areas will get you the best help.

Is the deck material on this boat plywood or aluminum?

All aluminum boat owners should have a rivet gun and an assortment of rivets (blind "pop" rivets), it'll come in so handy when you need it you'll wonder how you ever got by without it.

Thanks guys! A simple crash course in rivets and rivet tools were just what I needed. I've got the gun and the right ammo for this particular task now and have removed all lids with confidence!

While we're on the discussion, the flush-mount handles on a couple of the lids have rivets going thru them. Is it possible to remove these and place back on after carpeting or should i just in invest in new handles since they're cheap and i only need 4 of them? Thoughts??

You can drill out the rivets on the handles and then put the handles back with new rivets without a problem.

These forums are pretty cool! I've found so much information to help with this project it's amzazing:facepalm:

I've run into another stumbling block with the carpeting project i'm working.

Looks like i need to remove the throttle housing for a 2006 Mercury 50hp. I've attached pics for anyone who has ideas on how to remove or a better way to recarpet this area. Is this a fairly simple removal or should i just focus oncutting out the surrounding carpet and leave the unit in place?

Well i'm going forward with cutting the carpet from around the throttle houseing. If anyone has ideas on how to get this thing off in the meanwhile, i would love to hear. May make things easier when i put back on.

Ayuh,.... I donno,... I'm sure it comes apart,... Try the Merc outboard forum with the question,...
