Just to add more confusion to your choice, if you can, always get the oil compressor vs the oil free. They are a lot quieter. If you are stuck because of the combo offer, get a long hose and put the compressor in another room from the one you are working in. I have my compressor in my garage with enough hose to reach the entire house so I don't have to hear the darn thing.

I agree, my little twin tank is a noisy bugger, when ever I can, I use my 65 gallon in the garage with hoses hooked up, my wife was ready to divorce me last winter using that little oil less in the house!

Your small nail gun will work just fine for shooting the cat that messed up all that woodwork....... ;)

The porter/cable is a very good nailer. You will be happy with that setup..

OHHHHHH,

After shooting one of those little 18 gauge nail through my finger and finger nail last winter, I can't say I would wish that upon my worst enemy, it hurt worse that getting shot by the bad guys when I was serving in the Gulf !!

Re: Can my air compressor handle this tool??

pressure is what drives the piston in the nailer' the tank capacity is how much air you have on hand.

CFM is the consumption rate

Your nailer will use 4-6 cfm, your compressor suplies 2.4 cfm.

If it will keep up depends on how long you plan to use the nailer and how many nails you intend to drive.

If you were going to use it to do trim for your house it will probably be fine if you don't mind taking a few stops to let the tank fill back up

After all you won't be shooting a nail every 5 seconds for hours straight.

but like Kmarine said if you plan to up grade later or use other air tools you might want to upgrade the compressor.

The oil bath compressors generaly last longer than the oil free. I still have my dads old sears oil bath compressor( bought for him by mom for fathers day in 1979) and have only had to changed the reed valves in it once and it has worn out several air tools and painted six cars.

You two are killing me!! My male logic brain says I should just buy the HF compressor and nailer and be on my way for $150. I doubt I will return the porter/cable compressor but now I have to look at the specs to see the operating db level. I saw one at HF today that said 88 db. That's pretty darn loud.

I should buy that cat a can of tuna. I bought my house for a steal because some rehab was required. I saved around $30,000 on the house and put about 15 back into it. Now my house is one of the most updated in my neighborhood for less money. Thank you destructive kitty!!

I hope you are right

I have a couple HF nailer/staplers and a couple Porter Cables. You did good upgrading to Porter Cable.

I just looked and both the sears and the porter cable compressors are rated the same at 82 db (loud I know). Now I hope I can finally relax and just enjot my new tools and hopefully get this trim up.

Don't let us diswade you, it is a personal choice, db rating is for noise level, not noise tone, certain brands have different tones. I am sure you will be happy with your choice and be able to get things put back together with no problem at all.

Porter Cable is some of the best stuff out there, so it will do the job for you.

Sorry "You had questions, we had answers"

No problems my friend. Now on to my next bit of drama (perhapse another thread who knows). I do not have a miter saw, only a cheap table saw. I have a feeling after a few poorly matched cuts I will be in the market for a miter saw. Actually I'm sure I know someone who has one to borrow.

Anyways, the whole nail gun thing is pretty trivial at this point compared to the challenge of making a perfect joint. At least I'm working with the cheap and forgiving prefinished white casing.

Oh man...forget the table saw for making miter joints. You need a miter saw. Using a table saw would drive me crazy with the long lengths of molding and it will probably throw the accuracy of the 45 out the window.

Yes, you need a miter saw to do those cuts, doing them on a table saw would be a mess at best, I remember one of the box stores had a skill brand miter saw on sale this last weekend for about $40 or if you have any pawn shops around, you might check with them, I got my last miter saw at the local pawn shop for $50 bucks and it is a 10" with slide as well as laser guide.

But again, the table saw will drive you crazy trying to cut molding...

Amazon has (had :( ) a 10" Hitachi compound miter saw on sale for $103 a couple days ago, I've seen them in the store for $250+. I used one of these and it was a Cadillac compared to my POS Rigid miter saw. I was drooling over it, but decided Christmas presents for the kids were more important...

Where are my priorities at?:D

Makita, Hitatchi and Porter Cable are premium miter saws. Probably overkill for cutting MDF casing that you're using. Nice thing about MDF is a blown cut can easily be hidden with Alex caulk.:D Whatever it is you pick up or borrow, the best investment is a good BLADE! Freud Diablos are my favorite. Get a fine crosscut style.

Re: Can my air compressor handle this tool??

I actually put up crown molding in my family room just so that I could run the surround sound wires behind it using my table saw.

What I did was screw a small length of 2 by 4 to the face of the guide. It came out pretty good after touching it up with some spackle.. Of course because the crown will never be impacted by anything I used the cheap plastic/foam crown. I'm sure I'm a fool for thinking I can try to get away with this for the door trim. One thing is for sure, If I can't get a good cut I will get the right tool. I'm cheap but doing a good job is more important than saving $$. I'll likely borrow a miter saw anyways as I know three people off the top of my head that have them.

Keep the tool talk coming, I'm really enjoying this thread as I have a lot to learn about this sort of thing.

If you happen o have a backsaw laying around and you want to save some bucks just use your table saw and a couple of pieces of hardwood and make a miter box. If every thing goes right you only have to make four cuts anyway. Or eight if you are doing both sides of the door.

Re: Can my air compressor handle this tool??

Yesterday I fired up the new compressor for the first time. After following the break in procedure I started to play. We recarpeted our stairs a few months back but all I had at the time was an Arrow brand spring loaded staple gun. Those staples keep pulling loose. So I took some scrap wood and scrap carpet and practiced with the staple gun that came with the set. It was so easy.

All I can say is that I wish I would have bought a compressor a long time ago. It makes things so much easier and that motivates me to take on more of the projects that I have been putting off. This summer I'm already thinking of buying a small paint sprayer so I can re stain the railings on my deck. When I did them with a brush it was so hard to get all of the nooks and crannies painted and many areas look pretty bad.

Great glad to hear it, when you get ready to get a spray gun, that is one thing I can say HF does ok at, I have one of the small guns, it is a one pint cup and it works great for doing stain work, I did all of the cabinets in our new kitchen with it and can it was WELL worth the $20 bucks I paid for it, and I will be using it for trim work on the boat next summer..

Actually I just checked an it is a 20oz and they have it on sale this month for $14.99
