Re: Bullies on the water

The very best way to keep yourself and your family safe is to stay out of harms way. If you go looking for trouble with misguided ideas of retribution you will probably pay for it....even tho' there are some great hero stories out there. The odds definitely are not in your favor.
Being anchored in the middle of a channel is not the safest of practices...but they should have payed more attention to the antogonists boat, and the people on it and let the law deal with those clowns.

Sabbath,

Have you ever noticed that mass shootings generally take place in gun free zones? Ive never personally researched it but have read several references to your violent crime going up when your firearm restrictions became more strict.

Nope, statistically incorrect.
When I first read this I thought of the U.S and the rise in mass shootings over the last 15 years is easily the highest in the G10 countries. I'm not picking on the U.S here....I am both a gun owner and someone who regards the U.S and its citizens as an excellent neighbour, but that is what it is.

Again, with respect to the original posting...the best you can do under circumstances that these people were under is to stay cool and get every piece of useful I.D information you can to see that these clowns are brought down to bare by the justice system.
Its highly unlikely these people would have 'shot their way to success and happiness'.;)

My two bits.

As one would guess I'm pro gun. I am delighted and perfectly comfortable not have ever having needed to use it and i pray it stays that way.

As far as arguing statistics, i don't care to argue but am happy to share data. Depending on how the statistics are displayed you can support each side of the debate. I tend to look at the ones that support my thinking, naturally. Here in the us when citizens are allowed to be armed, crime against them goes down. Most gun crimes are committed by felons, committing a felony. The majority of which are in one state. Guess which one?

In Australia it appears that after the "buy back" crime went up but gun suicides went down.

I didn't spend a lot of time looking but grabbed the first two that "Dogpile" found

Put me on record as not having used a gun in the o/p's situation. I would however have been happy to have had it, if needed. Like you i think the best protection is to keep yourself out of harms way, stay out of high risk situations. Avoid conflict whenever possible. I however refuse to be a helpless victim.

The strong survive and the weak become a statistic. I am old and weak but knock on my door and I will face you with a weapon. Home invasions on the elderly are not that uncommon. I personally knew victims that would be here today if they had had an equal chance to defend themselves.

This whole story sounds fishy to me. The huge "perps" boats were 21' and the "victims" boat was 16' feet, only a 5 foot difference. " they passed to within 2 feet". I don't think so. They say the father was cut, but no mention of how it happened or if it needed stiches. This whole story reaks of a false reaport or of sensationalism by the reporter to get a story. I don't believe it.

There are always skeptics.
Next you'll be pointing out that if you "Google" the details you'll only find the story in the local fish wrap, and links to it from the usual sources.....and you'll probably claim that it's surprising that not one regional or national reputable media source has gone with it at all, although they love this kind of tale. ;)

Re: Bullies on the water

i myself had an "incident" with "percieved" bullies. was fishing in a sheltered cove on a foggy day, when out of the mist came about 10 boats...the pilots were all waving wooden clubs!! i thought i was done for. as they came out of the fog, it turns out they were just kayakers, and the clubs were just the paddles, and they werent waving them , they were just paddling. phew! ;)
