Re: Building a 350 Vortec motor

Well, i'm not exactly sure what they will end up doing to mine since the heads were practically new to begin with. I told him to do whatever he thought would be in my best interest. He did like the LS6 choice for springs though and has done that mod many times over with good results.

I got in touch with they guy who did my parts ordering and am a little nervous. He ended up ordering me a Lunati cam instead of the original comp cam we had discussed. Hoping he didn't order wrong for my application. I pick up my intake and whatever cam he got tomorrow afternoon sometime. Keeping my fingers crossed for now. Hopefully i can get some work done soon. My patience is getting thin.

I do need a tip on somehting. Since i've never put a motor back together, how do i get #1 set at TDC, and get the cam lined up appropriately before putting on the timing gears and chain?

PSSSSHHHHHH.... I have no idea yet. Getting together with this guy to get my parts is worse than getting stood up on a date in my opinion. STILL WAITING!

The last call i got was "I'll meet you tomorrow morning at work. Call you when i'm on the way". Needless to say, no phone call. I don't think the discounts on parts he's been getting me are worth it anymore even though he got me the intake for cost and the cam for $170 instead of $300.

Thanks for the links... Good reading.

Re: Building a 350 Vortec motor

Houston, we have a problem. I just spoke to the head shop. The GM beehive springs i purchased from the link shown in this thread previously require a install height of 1.800 and 90lbs of pressure. The shop is getting 1.690 install height and 110 lbs of pressure. What is the solution?

:redface::facepalm::redface::redface::facepalm:

i went a little fast i guess....The 774 retainer is for the 8mm valves ls series...

The the 787 retianer is for the 11/32 vortec valves

The same bonehead mistake done in that article....I see now way out other than a return and repurchase.

Ooooops??? No big deal. I've looked on Summit's site and can't find the 787's. Do you have a link to them?

So, thinner retainer gets the spring to the correct height?

Oh duh, there it is.

Re: Building a 350 Vortec motor

New retainers came in yesterday afternoon as promised. I delivered them tothe shop this morning and had them check before i left. Seat pressure is down to 92lbs and install height went up to 1.785. I assume that is close enough to the specs for the springs (90lbs and 1.800 install height). They should be done by lunchtime today.

Now if i could just get my cam and intake from my parts guy. GRRRRRR!!!

Re: Building a 350 Vortec motor

1.785 should be fine your losing a few lbs of preload no real big deal. When you get your cam post the specs and we can figure out how much room you have before bind occurs.

After all the crap, dude tells me he got the wrong cam. Mechanical roller instead of hydrualic roller. So, i'll pay him what i owe him for my intake, then he can stick the wrong one up whoevers....

Ordered my own from Summit this evening. Comp Cams Marine extreme... .488/.495 intake/exhaust... 112 lobe separation. Paid an extra $42 to have it delivered tomorrow. I can't keep waiting on other people who don't make what i need a priority.

I'm in the middle of the exact same build. Can you give me the part numbers for the springs and retainers and anything else I may need for the Vortec Heads? I using the same Cam as you too.

Re: Building a 350 Vortec motor

Thanks for the links. Did your Machine Shop have to cut anything to make these springs fit? What about the Valve Seals?

They put in new valve seals for an extra 30 bucks. The beauty of using the GM Beehive springs is, there is no head cutting/modification needed to get them to fit. It worked beautifully. See upcoming reply and pictures...

Re: Building a 350 Vortec motor

Got alot done today along with finding what this motor originally came from... NOT a police interceptor afterall. Block casting number is 10243880... GM Crate motor for trucks/boats, ZZ4 Corvette motor... Only difference is the heads. ALuminum vs. iron.

So, today, we got the bottom end finished, heads installed, timing set installed, cam installed and degreed, valves adjusted properly, valve covers installed, alternator, power steering pump, fuel pump, fuel separator, water circ pump all installed. Got to the intake and..... OOOOPS, someone ordered me the wrong gaskets. Impalla gaskets DONT fit this motor, which is what made me research the block casting number. Once i get the correct intake/exhaust manifold gaskets, we'll be in business.
