Spoken like a true northerner.:facepalm: Having lived in the Cleveland Ohio area and now in SC I can tell you, unless you live here you can not understand the effects snow and ICE have on the region.

It was crazy here in Canton. I work for the county and we had a little dusting of some snow and ice in the southern part of the county and next thing I know the damn judges are signing orders to close all county offices and such as that. County schools never blinked. They had school all day.

I understand how the south doesn't know how to deal with it, or have the equipment to make the roads safe. My cousin lives east of Birmingham and they got around 3". As far as not knowing how to drive in it, it's simple, take your foot off the go pedal......

Sounds like in the next day or two 85% of the country will be at or above their average temperatures. You guessed it, everybody but the upper midwest. They talked about a warm-up today, upper teens for highs. Then back to single digits and still below zero lows. 2 months of this and counting..... It's gone on so long I'm "starting" to get tired of complaining...

Being a born and raised Yankee from Boston that has lived in Atlanta for 23 years, I used to be one of the ones saying, "southerners don't know how to drive in snow ", and laugh about it. It is amazing with no salt and sand what will become of the roads, sheer ice everywhere. Had friends from work that never made it home yesterday, 10 miles away, had to sleep in car overnight (15 temp). Will be a couple days before it melts.

Across many northern parts of the country there still isn't widespread central air. When the temps peak out in the high 90's or break 100 during a heats wave, and the news focuses on deaths of elderly and people suffering suffering the average southerner wonders what's up with them folks? Can't handle a little warmth?

Listening to CNN from Atlanta and all the political animals are trying to decide who to blame. I hope if they can decide who is to blame for winter weather they tell all of us so we can go after them. :D

What I find is amusing is that the host at this time (Carroll) is calling or being called by all the CNN people that got stuck out on the roads and HWYs for the last 12-15 hours and they are collectively ripping the mayor a new one.

Sounds like he deserves it though.

I guess the big difference between people in the south VS north is we can freeze to death in a short time and people in the south it takes them a while to stew to death.

You can always take clothes off to cool off, but if you do not have the right clothes on your going to freeze.

Its not the 2 or 3 inches of snow that's a problem, its the ice and the lack of snowplows and salt/sand spreaders. I grew up and learned to drive during the snowiest Chicago winters in history so a little snow is no big deal to me but the ice is impossible to drive on unless you have a Zamboni and there aren't many of them down here.

Re: Boo hoo - We had a little snow and ice...

I got caught in that mess yesterday. I had an 11 mile commute, and it took me 5 hours. There were several problems yesterday; 1. the temperatures never got above freezing, so what was falling was freezing to the ground causing a lot of black ice. 2. There was a lot more snow than originally anticipated, so folks all bailed out of their workplaces at roughly the same time, and 3. people are not used to driving on ice and in snowy conditions, so they were going way too slow and impeding traffic. With no tires breaking up the ice and keeping it warm enough to melt, and no real equipment for handling icy roads, the roads were skating rinks. With all the hills here, it made the roads impassable.

That having been said, I did not see any crashes in my 11 mile commute, and only 2 cars in ditches. I kept my truck in 4WD and only slipped a little once.

I do love that the Atlanta mayor is blaming businesses for letting their employees out at the same time. Putz!

it is what it is...southern folk and DOT's down there have an excuse.. they dont have the equipment to deal with and maintain roadways when you get the ocassional snow storm ,, up my way in Northern PA- we are different,, we have the equipment and experience on how to deal with it, if the drivers would only get in those darn trucks we'd be good up here ;)

Re: Boo hoo - We had a little snow and ice...

Grew up in Wisconsin and learned to do a scandinavian flick to go around the corners by the time I was 16. learned that there is no such thing as "all season tires" by the time I was 18. could not wait for the lakes to freeze over so we could go ice racing.

Now I drive an Audi Quattro (AWD) and just laugh at any weather up north or down here.

Have been in Atlanta for a few of the snow storms. we were the guys doing donuts in the parking lot in the rental car behind the WGCL news crews while they were explaining how you cant drive in the snow and its dangerous to go out.

driving in snow in atlanta with good tires has more traction than the idiots in florida driving bald tires during rainy season on the highway at 70mph.

the key to driving on ice and snow or any weather is to have good tires and not be aggressive with any input - throttle, brakes, or steering.

I agree that southern states do not have the proper equipment for dealing with snow and ice covered road ways. they also do not have deicing equipment at the air ports either. Then again, even in the northern mid-west, the municipalities have cut the budget to the point that the roads are not cleared most of the time.

As a transplanted Yankee and now in the middle of this mess, I would ask all that are laughing and sneering this question - How did you learn to drive in snowy conditions? It wasn't during snow and ice that occurs once in a Blue Moon. You learned the same way I learned, by daily exposure to driving on snow and ice.

But I laughed at some of the stuff I've seen too.

I find it quite funny that citizens are mad at mayors of cities because of mother nature. This just strikes me that people are trained to think life is perfect. None of these folks are willing to look in the mirror and think, I better stay home or I better plan a little bit. Laughable at best, but really kind of sad when we aren't even knowledgeable enough to care for ourselves or loved one's. That make's many "dependent"
Instead of independent.

I love crazy wild weather, big wave's, big snow, big wind, it just fascinates me. But I also have common sense.

Last time I checked the Mayor didn't have a hotline to call Mother Nature!!

Its ok though, they will live and learn, kick those Global Warming whiners in the junk!!

I'm with you greenbush, I love it, hot or cold, sunny or snowy or rain, fires, tornadoes whatever I love Mother Nature!! Its not the Mayors fault folks LOL!!

Lived in Atlanta and had a 2" snow one year and I laughed until I thought I'd die watching fools crash into each other and all the crying. So yeah, I know the effect snow and ice have on people that can't cope with a touch of winter.
Yeah, next thing you know, they will be crying about the price of propane!

Re: Boo hoo - We had a little snow and ice...

I think I gasped at the overhead video of the miles of cars smashed and in the ditches. It just boggles the mind. Solid ice driving is a way of life. Black ice is the big problem up here...regular ice not so bad. When what I see doesn't match with experience, I must be missing something. Even without any ice melt chemicals I'm still scratching my head.
