boat storage

I am trying to figure pros and cons of different storage options. I am near Lake Murray in South Carolina. One marina has dry storage, slips or storage on the trailer in their yard. I want either dry storage or a slip. I am leaning toward dry storage because it will keep the boat out of the sun. Are there any disadvantages to dry storage?

Mice....they love to chew on wires, howevervthere are many things that can be done to keep them away. Keeping your boat out of the sun will add years onto its life!!!

A friend of mine built a simple "A" frame out of lumber that he stands over his boat for winter storeage. He then drapes big tarps over the whole thing and weighs down the ends with heavy rocks. That, along with his normal boat cover, keeps it dry and out of the direct sunlight.

If you have the room for this in your yard or driveway, you'll save money by not paying the boat yard.

Dry slip seems nice as long as it allows for sour of the moment use . How long in advance do they need to get your boat in the water ?

Not sure, will have to check with the marina.

One thing I dont like about most dry storage is that you only have access to it during certain hours. So for example they may operate from 8:00am to 6:00pm. You can’t get your boat earlier than 8:00am nor return it later than 6:00pm.I ran into this once when I use to dry store my boat in the California delta. Got back a little after closing and had to leave my boat tied to their dock over night. My late return was due to unavoidable circumstances. I was most uncomfortable leaving my boat there over night.

Same. I had to decide if the cars or the boat get the garage. The cars seem to handle the weather pretty well

Yeah that is one of the reasons I was leaning toward the slip. If we wanted to go out early in the morning for a like a sunrise or a sunset could get access to the boat.

Only down side is getting it put in the water on a busy holiday weekend but trailer isn't going to be any better

Having tour boat slipped is very convienent, however it allows all the nasty growth to attach to your hull. Antifouling paint helps but it just adds more maintence. In my younger days I moored my boat but the constant cleaning drove me nuts ( yes I am anal about keeping my boat clean). I ended up getting a lift to lift the boat out of the water. This is the way to go!!! However not many marinas allow this nowadays. I was fortunate enough to be able to rent space from a cottage owner and we ended up building 4 lifts for all of our boats. When the opportunity for the lift became lost my boat went back on the trailer and has been there since. My trailer is set up for easy on and off, I can load and unload by myself and dont need a dock, I am 73 yrs old. Only you can make this decision and it wont be easy, lots of things to consider!!!

We have our pontoon boat in a covered slip with a strap lift and an Academy cover over it to keep the spiders etc to a minimum. Love it. The only downside I found to having it live over the water was when I recently changed depthfinders. I had to pull it out and park it under a shade tree in the marina lot for the install. Anyhow, a lifted, covered slip is the way to go.

I grew up in St Andrews and hit the lake plenty as a teen. My folks later lived in Ballentine with a 'lake view' for many years.
