Originally posted by RodC:
The two worst places I've been to are #1- Oakland Ca and #2 Detroit Mi.
Got lost once while travelling from SanFran to SanLeandro late at night in a rented Cadilac. Ended up in the slums of Oakland. It soon became apparent that I shouldn't be there and I didn't stop for traffic lights or anything. First time I had ever experienced first-hand how bad a place can be. When I told my story to fellow workers the next day they were dumbfounded. They said I was very lucky and that the cops won't even go into that area at night.
I think you and your buddies are watching too many movies. Not even close to being true. In Oakland, it’s the gang vs gang violence that is high. If you come here looking like trouble you’ll probably find it. Areas with public housing are the worse. But that’s the same in every major city, Oakland is no better or worse in that aspect. Oh, and if you have a problem with black people you probably won’t like or fit well in Oakland, CA. Oakland used to be predominately black but that is being challenged by growing Hispanic and Asian communities. Oakland’s Chinatown district is bigger, more populated than San Francisco’s. Something else Oakland has is the ‘leave me alone’ gay population that bailed out of San Francisco when the ‘in your face’ gay element went radical. These are the gay folks that want to live their lives like anyone else, nothing special.

I was born and raised in a tough hood of Dade county, Fl (Hialeah, actually).
But i was never afraid of the hood. I was part of it. When i ventured-into different depressed areas of Miami and Hialeah, i just ventured. I got jumped once by four mutants on the way home from school, and was hospitalised briefly. About one week after that, i was given a "token" by a friend, aquired after he grabbed some troops, and paid a visit. It was the class ring of one of the mutants that attacked me. I still have it. When i hold it,it makes me chuckle to this day. And it makes me realise the true nature of friendship.

"River", you were probably in "Pioneer Square". It can get a little rough there at times......I swear that Seattle has more bums / homeless / panhandlers than anywhere else per capita.....There is a law against "agressive panhandling" now but it is tiresome.....Sometimes you will have a bum on each corner of an intersection....Seattle/Tacoma has some places that you are better off not being at night......I avoid them......JK

18rabbit. Whats not true about what he said? East oakland is one of the worst areas you can be in in the bay area. And driving a cadilac? Give me a break! He's lucky he wasn't shot at. And gang vs gang violence may be high, but anybody is a fair target in oakland, the whiter and richer the better.
You're right about the growing population of the latinos and asians though. And the gang rate is high among them also.

Re: Anyone driven into a neighborhood that scared the carp out of them?

My worst experiences were during the first intifada in the bazaar of Nablus.Talk about scary. We patrolled these narrow slums with a bullet in the barrel and the safety on the guns was off. They used to try to get us with concrete blocks thrown at us from 3 stories up and they tried to hit our jeeps with old refrigerators also from the roof tops. The thing that mostly got to me was that gun men would jump into these narrow streets in the middle of a bunch of kids and empty out a magazine from their AK47 in our direction and jump back into a doorway. We could not fire back for fear of hitting the children with ricochets.Quite often I still wake up in the middle of the night after dreaming about those things
