Thanks Link!

TilliamWe,

I am going to contradict myself, try going to a USC game . . . Basically, in the middle of South Central LA (where the riots happened) and walking to and from parking to the Coliseum is pretty nasty. The USC Campus is great, but anywhere else near there sucks . . . :(

The LA Sports Arena is right next to USC there. I was following my BIL to go to a concert there. He pulls off the wrong off ramp and now we're in South Central L.A. and he's lost. I'm not, I know where we are and we're not supposed to be there. He pulls into a fast food joint and I won't get out of the car.

I yell at him to follow me and we take a smaller main street up to the coluseum and wouldn't you know it, we were escorted by a LAPD black and white.

Also, I now know why so many people are shot in drive by shootings...they're all outside on their porches and driveways...I mean everyone was outside. Maybe they were there to watch me in my red Acura drive thru their hood.

They were all on the porch looking at the pair of hands guiding the Accra down the street wondering where the rest of the body was. :D

Re: Anyone driven into a neighborhood that scared the carp out of them?

First time I ever went to Camden, New Jersey, was a little unnerving. I didn't exactly feel unsafe, but here's why...

I had to deliver a couple boxes to the Federal Court House about 14-15 years ago. Got off the exit, and the courthouse is supposed to be about 3 blocks away. Well, I could see it from the exit - because EVERYTHING around it had been leveled for several blocks. It sortakinda reminded me of the pictures of the hotel in Hiroshima that was directly under the blast - you know, the only thing standing amid the rubble. Why I felt safe was that I could see there was nobody closer to me than 2 blocks!

Coming back from Cedar Point, in Ohio, on my way home to Windsor, Ontario. We were in Detroit and my mother and I were taking the Ambassador Bridge back and it was about 2am on a Saturday night and took the wrong exit before we got to the bridge.
Looked like we were in Harlem. We stopped at a red light....there were quite a few hoodlums on each corner, staring at us. We are white and they were not!
I don't think they liked white folk in their neighborhood!
There were no other cars coming in either direction, but we were waiting patiently for the light to turn green. All the manholes on the road had steam coming from them.(just like in the movies)
Some of the guys starting walking towards our car and they did not look impressed with us.
My mother started to freak out, so at the last moment before one of them stepped in front of the car, I stepped on the gas and ran the red light.
We could see the bridge from where we were at, so we made it there without any other incidents.
That was freaky!!!

Pretty funny reading the recollections of my fair city. It came be pretty intimidating. Personally I've never felt uneasy anywhere in the city. I suppose growing up around it I just learned where not to be, not that I didn't go to those areas when I was younger. Its getting better but very very slowly.
Bro Chris, that area is so desolate with any legit reason there at night, assuming you were on the south side of the bridge, you had every right to be freaked. Not to mention the Det PD will not ticket you for running a light if you were scared. The other bad part about that story is the time, 2A.M., thats closing time for the bars here.
I could share some interesting events from all over Detroit but that would just get boring.

The only times I've felt uneasy were during my long hair, leather jacket days when I walked into some bars in the rural areas of northern MI, seemed like everything stopped and everyone was looking right at me. I guess they don't want the non-country boys in there local dives. But then again I am a city boy in their neck of the woods so I play by their rules.

Re: Anyone driven into a neighborhood that scared the carp out of them?

I just have to ask, has anyone else noticed that there are more and more of these "areas" ? Also, the crimes are no longer that someone got "jumped" or robbed or beat up......they're now shot ? Does anyone think that our justice system is working ?
I used to work in an area of Cincinnati called "over the rhine" in the late eighties. Back then I was there quite often late at night, and would not think twice about walking down the street to get a soda from the local liquor store. Right now, you couldn't pay me a million dollars to even DRIVE through there at night.
Back "in the day" when I traveled and someone asked where I was from (Cincinnati, OH) they would reply with something like " Are the Reds going to go all the way" or " how about them Bengals" or "WKRP". Now, everyone asks if there have been anymore riots. Sad, so very sad that we have let criminals and low-lifes take over so much of this country.

DaleT.
Yeah, it was the south side of the bridge.
I, also, have many other tales of Detroit, but none of them seem to be of good nature...except some of the concerts I went to, years ago. They were okay, without incidents.

Believe me I understand what you're saying. The funny thing is all major cities have there bad areas but in my experiences Detroits seem to be much larger and closer to the actual "attractions" of the city. I don't mean to bad mouth it, there are plenty of positives things to do and see here you just need a good guide to get you to them. If you're ever back this way let me know and I'll show you what this town can really be. Hopefully it will someday be the "Paris of the Midwest" again (not my term an old moniker that we once had), for now I'm content just knowing that it is on the rise, albeit a slow one.

Re: Anyone driven into a neighborhood that scared the carp out of them?

Use to live in the western burbs of Chicago. Boated at the "Chain" and was dating a girl from just over the border in Wisconsin. Took her down to the near west side (put the project wannabees to shame). Both of us half in the bag. Hot August night...cruising the side streets....cop (black) spots me and stops me an asked me just what the hell I think I'm doing bring a white girl in this area. Told me to get out NOW, and he would follow me until I was safe, and he would be on his way too. I rode and ride with a big bunch of ugly Harley's guys, and after Nam, not much scares me.......except California drivers....rode down south to see my brother in NorCal, and the crazy *******s in MOTORHOMES were right on our butt going through the coastal redwoods, 60mph in the rain, posted 45. I love Ca, but it has gone to hell. And Washington is following right in its tracks.

Thanks DaleT.
I will take you up on that offer, sometime next year, in the summer, or fall. I plan on coming back to visit my family.
It would be nice to see the "good" side of Detroit.

waterone - this is because it is politically incorrect to try to correct these people's behavior - they are merely expressing themselves in a non-traditional manner, it's society's fault, etc. etc.

It is far easier to let the honest people become victims, and then pass endless ineffective laws that merely give the lawmakers the appearance of "DOING SOMETHING".

Re: Anyone driven into a neighborhood that scared the carp out of them?

I recall going to Seatle to watch a Washington Huskies Game 10 years ago. Late at night in the centre of town, Some adults friends and I were walking along and what seemed like a swarm of homeless men approached us asking/demanding spare change/money. I said I haven't got any...sorry.
One replied "SORRY?, Come here, I'll kick your sorry a$$...".
Nice huh?

Re: Anyone driven into a neighborhood that scared the carp out of them?

In 1981 I and my wife drove to Los Angeles, well, to a hospital parking lot in Watts to investigate some felonious criminal activities on that particular site. Had to be there at 3am to test the lighting in the lot. The first time I ever locked the doors to my truck and the keys were on the seat. AAA wouldn't come out there and ti took another hour and a half to get a cop to come out and help. Finally just broke a window and got the hell outta there. Does that count? ;)

Re: Anyone driven into a neighborhood that scared the carp out of them?

The two worst places I've been to are #1- Oakland Ca and #2 Detroit Mi.
Got lost once while travelling from SanFran to SanLeandro late at night in a rented Cadilac. Ended up in the slums of Oakland. It soon became apparent that I shouldn't be there and I didn't stop for traffic lights or anything. First time I had ever experienced first-hand how bad a place can be. When I told my story to fellow workers the next day they were dumbfounded. They said I was very lucky and that the cops won't even go into that area at night.
Worked in Detroit for a short while in a funny location. On one block there were bars on the windows and 1" bullet proof glass in all the stores and gas stations at the cash counters. On the very next block was the theater district with museums, theaters, resstuarants, art galleries etc. Never felt in danger but still had an uneasy feeling. Really makes me appreciate where I live. I can still leave the doors unlocked at night.

Bro Chris, if I'm available I will gladly show you around. Just let me know when you will be coming in and a general idea of what you're interests are.

Now, I'm curious, what is it that causes us to be uncomfortable? New environment, unfamiliar social atmospheres, different customs, or something more? I can't really answer that for myself. To be fair some people could read this thread and thinks it has racist overtones, I don't believe thats the case. That is why I didn't include it. To be honest, I've been a member, mostly a lurker, of this site for some time and I find this thread very intriguing, probably the reason I actually posted. The reason its intriguing to me is it lends an insight into the comfort levels of people with relation to new, less than ideal situations. To me that is a bit more personal than the standard online forum communications. Just one more of the many reasons I frequent this board.
