Re: Anyone driven into a neighborhood that scared the carp out of them?

Kinda funny hearing about Adams county..Our family has a cottage a few minutes from Castle Rock Lake. Going into town for whatever reason was always a treat. I must say 15-20 years ago that place was just scarry. Now it is somewhat more of a normal town - still pretty strange tho. I do remember a couple years where my Dad wouldn't let us go there because of escaped inmates on the run.
As far as bad experiences, who hasn't gotten turned around in Chicago - I know I have. I had a girlfriend whos sister was in love with Two Pac. We got messed up and ended up in South Chicago. Her sister, in the back seat, was showing off red and blue bandanas out the back windows. I was about ready to drop her off at the nearest Popeyes. I also had some friends from Floressent Mo. We got misdirected and messed up - ended up in East St. Louis(long story but it was an experience.) Last summer while visiting friends in Phoenix we got chased out of a neighborhood by a group of guys in a huge van with curtains.
Getting into crap like that makes you appretiate your own town/street/neighborhood.

You just went into the wrong neighborhood. You have to remember LA basically stretches for 50 miles in every direction except the water. Don't let one bad neighborhood make up your mind.

I made a wrong turn in Philadelphia once and was as scared as I have ever been anywhere. Started running lights to get out of there. I don't think any cop would've given me any trouble. I still like Philly though . . .

Have I ever had a "carp" experience? you bet! I lived in Norcross Ga. (suburb of ATlanta) for almost 30 years. nice quiet little place until about 6 years ago when the illegal immigrant swarm arrived.. I had to move, took a loss on the house, but Im alive...

I got lost in Atlanta one time, not pleasant at all. I am from Long Beach Ca, not the greatest place on earth either. Been quite awhile since I have been there though...

1974 around midnight
On my way to Germany I was headed to Travis AFB. Being low on gas I pulled off in a town called Oakland CA. Never saw so many cops in my life.
One Black, one White on every other block.
I pulled over to ask directions.
They gave me directions to the nearest station.
Then told me to go straight there and not to stop at any stop signs or lights! Just check traffic and keep rolling!
They said if I got into trouble there werent enough of them to help!
Gets Better!
I find the gas station and fill up. The attendant kept walking towards me then would turn around and go back inside. Did this seveal times and he was angry! When I went in to pay he just snached the money out of my hand. I asked what was wrong?
He yelled! I DONT WANT NO WHITIES ON MY BLOCK!
So I gave CA a one finger salute and never went back ;)
Nice place that there CA! :D :D

Had a flat tire on I 80 there in Oakland CA one time in my girlfriend's brand new BMW. No shoulders on the freeway so I had to pull off the off ramp.

Scared the bejeesus out me....never changed a tire so fast in my life. By the time I was done, I had about 15 not so friendly looking people watching me and getting closer and closer...

Re: Anyone driven into a neighborhood that scared the carp out of them?

Back in 81 while traveling out east for Xmas and wanted to go thru Canada via Detroit. Got lost trying to find the bridge and ended up somewhere I didn't want to be plus it 11 PM, was a near blizzard going on. Only thing open was a White Castle and all the buildings were boarded up and graffitied with slogans like "ck the Reagan program. Decided right then and there if I stopped and got stuck in the snow at a light we were goners.Blew every light until we found the tunnel. Nice town Detroit, ya right.

Going out to the Jersey shore couple of years ago got off the I in Philly downntown about 4 AM to get on my road and at the light at the ramp a bad guy starts coming to the car. That light was history too. I rather explain to a cop why I blew the light than have a tire iron shatter my window.
The 45 auto now comes on road trips, gun laws be damned.

The Peoples Socialist Republic of Madison is now seeing a daily barrage of drive bys and cabby robberies. Poor guys can't refuse to go into these hoods.Guess we've caught up with the rest of the country. I don't see how people in the big cities live like they do, maybe they just accept it that their turn might be nwxt.

I had to make a pickup in Milwaukee about 10 years ago about 11 PM in a really bad part of town. I got a little lost and since all the monkeys had shot out all the street lights it was hard to see the street signs. I had to get out of my truck and check a sign when I heard what sounded like shotgun blasts pretty close. After a couple of minutes I realized it was from fireworks from the Polish fest at the lakeshore. That was the last time sumptin was picked up at night in that hood.
Truckers are shot in their sleepers all the time just because the bad guys can't steal the load. They get under the sleeper and shoot up into the poor guy sleeping. We're not allowed to carry firearms in a commercial truck but many do.
One day at one of our prisons they searched a big rig coming out and found a sawed off in the cab. From then on they checked us all real well before letting us in.

I also got off the wrong exit in Gary one day. I don't like areas where all the buildings have bars on the winders.
Personally Milwaukee is a scum hole a night. Beloit is akin to running a gaunlet evernight. In Racine last spring a guy from Arkansaw was getting carjacked when he pulled a gun and shot one of da brothers. They held him for a couple of days but had to let him go. They didn't even charge him w/having a loaded weapon in his vehicle.

You see here in Wisconsin we're not allowed to carry because we have a leftist crook for a Gov. that needs to be removed and vetoes our ablility to defend ourselves. Pointer and Pony will back me on this.

I'd be scared too if a trooper came to my winder and asked for my license and also "Where I got dem perty teeth". The time I got stopped in Salt Lake City and just had enough money to pay the ticket or sit in jail because Monday was a Morman holiday taught me to always have enough money/credit card to avoid having some bubba without a medical degree doing an exit exam on me.

Worked with a guy that was going to his in-laws in West Virginia. His in-laws met him at the Interstate and escorted him the 38 miles to their place, didn't want him to get "lost" on the way to their place I guess.

Anybody ever drive the Skyway bridge between Chicago and Indiana and look down? It's dark even on a sunny day. Yew, gives me the creeps.

Wildbill,

That is the area, below the skyline bridge that gave me the willies, and redefine the meaning of red lights and stop signs. Funny you would point that out!

Lol at baldguy and link!
I was born and raised in Oakland Ca. It's a sh*t-hole. I still go there regularly to visit my folks. Everytime I go I try to talk them into moving away from there.

Re: Anyone driven into a neighborhood that scared the carp out of them?

Maybe it's my hunting instincts that kick in when I'm in unfamiliar territory. I always assume that when I'm out of my hood that someone may be out "hunting" for me. Tunnel vision when out in the wild is a dangerous thing.

When my wife and kids last summer wanted to visit NYC they felt pretty safe because of all the security, National Guard w/automatic weapons on most street corners. Me, I would have been on edge looking for escape routes all the time.

In 1981 I crossed into Reyanosa, Mexico and there to greet us Americanos were Mexican Policia with auto weapons slung on their chests. Made me feel naked and defenseless, not more secure.

Re: Anyone driven into a neighborhood that scared the carp out of them?

I'll say it again . . . To act like Oakland or South Central LA or some parts of Long Beach are indicative of all of CA is a little (lot) unfair. There are parts of Northen CA that are very simialr to WA and there are parts that are as down home as some little town in Texas.

The great thing about this state is that you can find examples of almost any lifestyle you could imagine. Big city, small town, sleepy suburbia, rural farming, mountain cabins, beach houses, lakeside, liveaboard. Believe it or not, I could live all of those examples within 45 minutes of my house.

Sorry for the hijack, but CA gets beat up pretty regularly and sometimes for good reason. Usually not . . . ;)

I have no problems with feeling less safe if I would ever choose to visit Californication again. I would avoid it be because how many of your rights have been stripped away. San Frans recent weapons ban puts that hill hole off my list. I think what did it for me for LA was the show "Dragnet" and then "Chips"

Re: Anyone driven into a neighborhood that scared the carp out of them?

What the heck, I havent help hijack a thread in a long time.
OK this is just for BC :)
I actually have lived in CA. psst (dont tell anyone)
Long Beach until 4 yrs old then the Hopa Indian reservation and then Willow Creek and again back to Long Beach when I was 16.
Now you might need to correct me on this area part but in 1991 or 92 Mrs.Link had her two week AT(Active Traing) at Moffett Field a "then" Navy base. I think its just north of San Jose and I think the town was Mountain View?
Anyway she got put in a room by herself so I drove down and spent the two weeks with her.
What a great place! While she was at work doing Navy stuff I just hung around with the locals flying kites and meeting other ham operators that I had talk to in the area over the years.
Frys and Wierd Stuff two places a must see in the area. Even though its a city the people were just so friendly. I really wanted to move down there but Mrs.Link couldnt get the transfer.
Then we took a week comming home camping up Hwy 101. Great trip.
But homeboy ain't never going to Oakland again! :D

Yeah I got a scare about a year ago, I left a guy's house, made a right then a left, and OMG, I went down the biggest hill in Illinois, and there were trees on either side, instead of corn/soybeans!

QC, landed at LAX, friend picked me up & we went straight to Dodger Stadium, then to Torrance afterwards. Then to Long Beach the next day, LA beaches the day after that, and true, I was not scared once. Not even a little. But hey, I walked from Downtown Cincinnati to UC at 2am after the 1990 world series, so I have seen hell!
