Imagine my excitment, receiving an envelope from the Yingling vs eBay "settlement fund" (insterted sarcasm).

Apparently there was a successful class-action lawsuit, against eBay and it was time, for my "share".

The letter also stated:

"you should consult your tax professional regarding the impact this distribution will have on your taxes"

"Cash promptly - void after December 22, 2011."

The check, payable to me - was for 5 cents.

Time for some holiday shopping! ;)

Re: Almost Living Large

I got mine a couple days ago.
21 cents.....
Haven't decided where to spend it yet!

Typical class action.
The only ones 'living large' with this are the lawyers.

You all got me beat. I didn't get a check.

Whenever I get a class action notice in the mail, I don't even read it. Never seen one that will pay me enough to make it worth my time.

Its real, got my check, $4.86.

Refund of final valuation fees from ebay, that were supposedly miscalculated.
You didn't need to sign up, based on your ebay sellers records.

Well, OK, let's live large! One-ups-man-ship, eh?!

A few years ago I joined a class action lawsuit against GM for faulty intake manifold gasket design. My award on that one was $400. I'm not complaining about it, "but" what those defective gaskets cost me was easily well over $2000!

Who's got a bigger one? Must be somebody!

Re: Almost Living Large

Reading the link mscher gave ^^^ and subsequent links. I found;

eBay paid $30,000,000 + legal fees of $???

Plaintiff's (you) attorney fees totaled $7,685,000

Plaintiff's split the difference of $22,315,000

The filing Plaintiffs got at least $30,000/$15,000 each

There were 2,524,469 class action members

Average payout was about $8.84

eBay admitted no wrong doing

4 Law schools split the unclaimed balance from the $22,315,000

OP mscher got a freakin' nickle, equivalent to the deposit on a beer can in various and sundry States. 5 whole cents.:mad::facepalm:

Final conclusion; Some lawyers make a lot of money  and I shouldn't read legal junk when I'm waiting for the temps to go up so I can work on the boat.

GA, thanks for the excellent summary. Now I can throw away 6 bottles instead of returning them :D

But seriously, there's a whole lot of ridiculous involved here.

Hope you can get at the boat soon!

I got a class action settlement check from a previous employer several years ago. Came out of nowhere and I had no idea it was coming. It was $1800! Three days later I got another for $1500 from the same suit! WoooHooo! Decked out a rifle...big time!

Re: Almost Living Large

I really hate eBay since they require you to use PayPal and their policies towards sellers in disputes is unfair, IMO, so I didn't get a part of this settlement. But I did get a random letter in the mail about a year ago regarding a settlement from Toyota about Scion xB windshields. Too thin and they crack. (I'm on my 3rd) Sent them a copy of the receipt for the last one and they sent me a check. I was astounded. :D
On another somewhat related note, I always prepare my taxes online, but have to print and mail the signed paperwork and for some reason, for the last 5 years, after I get my direct deposit refund (or pay them, on the bad years :() The IRS sends me a check for $1. (?) I've never cashed one and have been meaning to take them to a local restaurant that has decorated $1 bills taped up all over their walls. :D
