When mixing PB does it matter if I use milled 1/8" fibers with my Cabosil or can I use chopped 1/2 " glass for my transom install ?
Most people use 1/4 from what I see. I didnt buy any milled or chopped glass for mine. I used a cross cut paper shredder and shredded the cut offs of csm and mixed it in. They came out different sizes but when mixed in worked out good. If any pieces came out to big I used scissors to cut those clumps up.

I used both (milled and cut-up CSM) and I found the milled to be a lot easier to work with. I had a decent amount of clumping with the CSM bits.

Well my milled did not come today, so I ended up with chopped glass. What a pain that was to work with. I will use the milled for bedding my stringers when it comes. Rain for tomorrow and possibly Friday. Hence the impatience to put the transom in today. Thanks to my son the install went smoothly. My supplier only has 1/4" in carbon fiber.
Thanks for the Suggestions.
I will say that I like working with poly much better than epoxy. Too bad it has to stink so strong.
I am learning as I go with the help of all the fellow boaters on the forum.

Thanks,
Carlos

Tabbing in transom tonight . Rain stopped . I coated my stringers in poly and put PE spacers under them. Will bed them tomorrow weather permitting. The spacers are 5/8 backer rod . I cut in half .

The stringers are ready for bedding. I went with the 2x12's only because I had them. Next time I will use all plywood like it was suggested .

Well the stringers are bedded and the transom cut. I decided to use a hole saw from the outside first for the steering notch outs.
Ran out of Cabosil. I used 2.5 gallons of resin so far. No glass work yet.
I will say I like the milled fibers. Very easy to work with.

Can I use my wood flour with poly?
Also I see everyone using plywood for the engine mounts. Would 2x8 stacked on flats and epoxied together be ok? I have an abundance of 2x's , not much plywood at the moment.

For my engine mounts I used 4x4 Douglas Fir.

I used mahogany for my mounts. I'm no expert, but I think as long as it is somewhat dense (won't crush under the weight of the engine) and will take a lag bolt, you're probably ok.

Good suggestion. I see you had the original tabbing left .
Yes. I did that to help with positioning everything being my first time at this. I am glad I did this because my boat is narrower being a 4 cyl. which left me having to make many angled cuts underneath which would have made it hard to get them in the proper orientation to each other.
I just made sure I bedded them in enough PB to make sure there weren't any gaps under them as well as the sides.
I also left a small lip for my stringers also where it was just enough for me to clamp the new stringers in when bedding them.

Not sure about wood flour, I know people use it to thicken and it supposedly has better sanding properties. I have also read others say it will absorb and hold water. $20 from us composites will get you more cabosil then you will want (i have a bunch left over and not much more PB to make.)

For the motor mount as long as you square the wood up or fill any gaps with PB and glass properly it should work fine. I started making mine out of a 4x4 scrap. But ultimately used layered ply scraps because I wanted it going from stringer to stringer and the 4x4 scrap wasn't long enough.

Thanks , I will rip some 2x12's and epoxy them together for my mounts.

I ordered some Cabosil , but it wont be here till Tuesday. I have a gallon of wood flour , but if it holds moisture , then I will wait .

How many layers of glass is everyone putting on the transom and stringers? I have 2 csm and 2 1800 layers. I thought I had 1808 but it is csm free. I will say the 1800 goes on well except for the edges of the fiberglass , as it unthreads easy.

A good rule of thumb is to replace at least what you took out. More is ok but you will start adding weight to the boat.

I did 2 layers of 1708 on the face of the transom that you can see from inside the boat. 2 layers of 1708 tabbing on transom/stringers/bulkheads. 1 layer 1708 to cap the stringers and bulkheads. Seems plenty stout now that it's all done.

I did one more csm on top of the 1800. This brought me to 2 inch and 1/16 thick transom. At 38 deg Celcius my glass dried fast .

Working on the engine mounts. I have laminated 3-2x6 on the flat with 3/4 inch plywood on top. I was going PB to stringer and notch in the side and use a 3/4 plywood to the hull and one glued with PB to the stringer under the mount. Then wrap in 1708.
Would I create any hard spot with the plywood direct on the hull? The length is 20 inches.

This is what I came up with for my engine mounts so far. I just PB'd them in.
