this afternoon I went and checked a boat, year is 1998 and Mercruiser 3.0L. He started the motor without water and then stopped the engine. The cylinder pressure are 130,125,120,120. The engine oil is brand new. Also I found that the motor seemed not run smoothly while pressure testing when he turned the key. my current boat is smooth when I turn the key. Also he does not like to do the water testing because it has been winterization. should I continue? what does the owner want to hide?

the owner mentioned that cabuerator is needed to be cleaned.

You are right. I will not buy it without run it in the water. I think the oil will be milky after it running in the water if block is cracked

Yeah when I sold a good working boat, add said everything worked willing to water test. As mentioned 2.5/.3.0 are easiest to drain. Needs a carb rebuild means it doesn’t run well. Compression is not great wonder if done after it is hot it will be higher.

when selling a boat I would not water test with out a deal and seeing the money, but if so he should do a water test…if he was buying vs selling he would want that too. Otherwise without water test drop the offer significantly .

Ruined impeller definitely. Possibly overheated exhaust shutters. Possible crack looking to hide.

you are right. I insisted on the water testing. He said OT has been winterization. but the boat was sold at the second day
