Always feels good to get some fresh new gel down. Looking good.

Thanks, yea its funny how much better a boat looks with the gel on it, its basically the same boat, but having that uniform color makes it look like a totally different boat.

I can say tho, that 100 pack of plastic shoe covers I bought on amazon was a fantastic purchase. I was able to walk on the kicked gelcoat to get to the engine compartment/bilge without tracking any dirt into it.

3rd and final coat of gel is down... this was a tinted coat to match the hull color plus mixed around 75% gel to 25% duratec hi gloss additive. I'll be including some stuff I learned about duratec in my next youtube video for those that are interested in using it. It's awesome stuff, I can tell you that.

If you dont wanna paint and only use gelcoat, this stuff is a must, it thins it like crazy even at 25%.

Next is painting the deck and seat boxes.

Well, after a busy week and not much boat work, I finally got out and used a work light at a low, raking angle and discovered that I had lots of imperfections in my fairing. I decided to mix up some more compound and fix and of the issues I circled with sharpie. That was a couple days ago, so now it's time to sand those spots and get the primer down... hoping I can get to that tomorrow or sunday

Didnt get to sanding until tonight cuz when I went out on Sunday, I went to change the disc and the whole pad and some cast parts and a bearing came with it... kinda bummed out cuz it's a pretty decent quality ridgid random orbit sander and it was only like 6 months old...

Went out and bought another one cuz if I have to send it out for warranty, I don't want like 6 weeks of down time...

I guess now with two sanders I'll be able to go twice as fast! Edward sander hands....

Anywho, I finally finished sanding tonight.. it's nowhere near perfection, but I'm happy with it... I also finished the color matched gelcoat around the transom plate and one other spot I missed. I also shoved some down in the engine mount through holes and the holes in the transom for the eyes for the tie downs. I still need to fill the old holes from the hinge for the sun deck but that's not urgent...

I think there's nothing left to do but wipe her down with acetone and put down some primer and paint.

Got a picture for ya kcassells

Got the boat wiped down with acetone and finally broke out the interlux prekote primer and laid down the first coat... looking pretty good me thinks... there are definitely some spots that aren't perfect but hey, it's not a mold surface... not gonna be perfect.

So far I'm happy... Ill give it a sanding tomorrow night and probably do a 2nd coat but I'll have to wait and see.

After that its gonna be laying down the 1st coat of paint, then taping and 2nd coat with nonskid then 3rd and final coat.... then reassembly time.. WOOP WOOP!

Gelcoat was the original plan, however I realized after some research that rolled gelcoat is not the smoothest finish and I wanted the whole nonskid with a glossy smooth border look, so I decided to go paint. However, I had already bought 2 gallons of gelcoat and didn't want to waste it all, so I ended up gelcoating the entire engine compartment and inside the seatboxes, basically anywhere that I didn't care so much about the appearance.
That way, I only had to buy a quart of primer and 2 quarts of interlux brightsides paint so it saves some money on the paint.
So far, I'm happy with the decision, but we'll see how it turns out!

Turkey doo doo....Most boat decks and verticals are gelcoat with a baby smooth azz surface. Lots of work but I surely see the value of paint.
I I I don't like gelcoat 1 bit. Tooooo much work. I've seen guys put it on like paint and its great. There must be a stupid magical application that's not so mysterious. ;)

Oh, its absolutely possible... But I don't have the patience to sand it all smooth and buff it out... Unthinned gelcoat rolls on like mayonaise (i think i threw up a little)... When I mixed it with duratec high gloss additive it made all the difference, it was so much thinner. However, thats what I didn't like about it. In order to get it thin enough to self level, I had to buy a crazy expensive additive, then you have your waxes, and catalyst, and short shelf life, and blah blah blah... Such a pain, its clearly not meant for a backside cure. Its fantastic for what its meant for but not so much the other way round.
Paint is a no-brainer and I'll remember that for next time.

I spent all that time fairing the deck, so I wasn't about to glob on some thick gelcoat that I'd have to sand for 6 more hours lol... Although this darn interlux paint requires sanding between each coat...
