Slow and steady, step by step and bit by bit...you'll be putting back before you know it...

And for now, leave just a shadow line of where the original stringers are [good reference for the reinstallation of the new stringers]...you don't want to try and put new stringers inside the old stringer channels...reason being, you need to have a roughed up and thoroughly cleaned surface for the new glass to grab hold of...if you just put wood in there with resin on it, it won't become structurally adhered...

Remember to take lots of measurements, notes and pictures...

Looking good!

Re: 87 Invader v171

So I started looking at taking the top cap off because I can see the wood is rotted up towards the bow under the floor that is part of the top cap. It looks like the top cap lays over the hull, I think the pictures will make more sense. The rub rail is mounted with rivets, can I replace these with screws?

My other ideas were to cut out the floor that was part of the top cap, just the floor part though.

Or..... I could cut it out like Mroz's Invader bow rider

I'm concerned about two things if I cut this section out, first will I lose any structural integrity, and second I definitely will lose what little storage space I have so I need to figure out another way to come up with storage space (maybe convert the ski locker to anchor, rope, bumper, etc storage).

I'm hesitant about taking the cap off because I don't have much room to work.

Yup, same like me , no space so the cap must stay on my boat ;) . But my idea is cut it Exactly where are the seats turning down and then just use 1/4 plywood to make a new ones but not shore if it gonna work though .

hey Mroz you got that hull looking pretty good i must say, nice job. pridekit, i didn't know there was any wood in between the cap and hull, i haven't pulled my bumper rail yet, i was just expecting that the cap and hull were gonna be butted up to each other, glass to glass with perhaps some type of glue/cement/5200 and rivets, screws, staples holding it all together. now i gotta check mine to see what gives?

i'll get ya a pic of my bimini top next week. i'm not able to work on my boat this week, but will next week. i think i'd take Mroz's idea and cut it out like he did. I don't think any of my storage under the front seats is boxed by wood. If i recall correctly there is carpet but its all just glued to the hull. So i'm not sure why you are talking like there is wood any where but on the deck? do you have wood storage areas some where in your boat? i sure don't on mine...or am i confused and your talking about something totally different than i am?

I'll take some better pictures so you can see why I'm pretty sure there is wood up there, not to mention the stringers run all the way up there and I'm 98% sure mine are completely rotted out. I'll also take some pictures so you can see the "storage" area that was created before I removed some of the panels.

Cleared out the fiberglass from the bow, just as I thought rotted wood :(

Cut out the rotted portion of the stringers and most of the fiberglass casing around them.

One was reallllllly rotted
IMG_0580.jpg

The other one wasn't as bad, but definitely needs to be replaced

Started pulling out the wood in the bow and clearing out the foam underneath.

As much of an annoyance as the fiberglass cutting has been, I find the foam is the biggest hassle of the destruction, other than the 90+ degree weather we have had the last week.
