Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

HA... you could paint a flat board then dip letter side down in order to coat only the top.... if you plan on reattaching to the boat again. If not.... I liked Jason idea of adding some Starcraft decals to his Islanders trailer. You could rivet it to the trailer if you wernt planning on putting it back on the boat :D

Ya know that's a pretty good idea Jayb, I'm not sure how that piece will end up yet.

I have two sets of decals ready to go after painting, so lots of options there.

Roz did an excellent job on all that paint removal, very clean!:D

You did a nice job of taking photos of all her hard work:rolleyes:

Cheers man!

Funny you mention that, our 5-year-old approached us while "we" were working and says "Why does it look like mom is doing all the work?" :D

I can't believe I convinced her to help out with that job. Good thing the Citristrip smells pleasant or I would've been working by myself.

I'm very happy with how easily the paint comes off with this stuff. We've been using the gel rather than the spray cans and it's a lot cheaper and easier to deal with. Great product.:)

I'm planning on flipping the boat tonight so we can get the rest of the paint off and get to work on the trailer.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Well I've got two fishing buddies meeting me at 5 tonight to flip the SS.

They are ready to go fishing so I might have some free labor for the next couple weeks.:)

Also scored some great gear for the boat, a Penn manual downrigger with the long arm and a Garmin marine GPS that will match my Garmin finder on the dash.

I will need to find another downrigger to complete the trolling setup. Planer boards will be part of the program too, since I think 4 riggers would be tough on a 16 footer.

I will get some photos up later, hopefully with the hull turtled finally.:D

Thanks fellas:)

The boat is off the trailer, not flipped yet just sitting in the yard for now.

I tied the stern to a tree and braced the hull while pulling the trailer out.

It all went smoothly and I can now proceed to work on the trailer:facepalm:

I've been telling myself that I won't be working on boat trailers for a while after this one is done. Lots of paint and rust to strip off with the wire wheel.:D

I will get the hull flipped tonight, and get going with the Citristrip.

When you're stripping paint, it seems like it will never end. You're lucky to have a willing helper so it doesn't drive you so crazy. Probably the hull will go quicker being a simpler shape. Good luck with the tipping and flipping.

Hey Mike, if the SS is laying in the grass, just roll er over eh! No need to wait on your buddies for that.

Save your bribe food/beverage for the flip back after paint:)

Your doing a nice job on the inside and I can't wait to see flip pics. Hoping to post some of my own tomorrow. The paint on the outside looks to be in nice shape, maybe you don't have to strip it all down.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Thanks for the replies fellas, no flip yet since it rained all night after I got out of work yesterday.

I did manage to get all but two of the roller brackets removed. The other two need some WD-40 and a bit of persuasion.

This raises a huge question for me...and I'm sure I'll have an answer after pricing Stolz rollers.

Bunks or rollers, I have about a week or two to decide on that.

The boat is on the grass, so I will roll it over and get her back in the driveway tonight I hope.:)

Bunks, no contest.

Yah, we had a solid storm up this way last night. Couple of boombers shook the kiddos right out of their beds.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Depends on the ramps you'll be using. If you are always able to float it off and on then I'd go bunks. Shallow ramps and beaches I'd go with rollers. I do both with my SS so rollers are right for me, unless it was a tilt trailer.

Bunks are nice for the support they give your boat. Perfectly adjusted bunks with the proper pigeon-toe make loading the boat near fool proof. Bunks do take a lot of water to launch and land your boat. If I recall from earlier in the thread, one of your favorite spots to fish requires you to launch amongst the lily-pads which may cause problems if you have bunks. Then again on 16ft boat you may be small enough to never see issues with really shallow boat ramps.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

If I went with bunks I'd probably lose the option of fishing at a few spots around here and that might be unacceptable.

Michael P makes a good point, and rcw is correct about my favorite fishing hole. No dock and barely enough water to float the boat past the lillies.

If I lived near the big lakes then bunks would be the way to go, but I'm an hour away from Saginaw Bay:(

If I went with bunks I think I'd still need keel rollers, which I would need to buy. Going with the same rollers would save a ton of money and hassle, but then I'd be worried about marking up the hull with black rubber.

I haven't seen any evidence of damage from rollers on the boat, maybe since it's a lighter rig than some it has not dented the hull or caused any hook near the stern.

Once I add the guide bunks it will be easy to keep the boat straight I'm sure.

Just for the record, 16 new Stoltz rollers/bow stop would run $300+ so that's no longer an option.

I will need a while to stew on this one and decide. Also considering some diamond plate fenders but not sure what the trailer budget is capable of producing:facepalm:

Thanks for the replies fellas:)
