Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I've been doing some research and have found out that Sanford Lake is considered one of the top five Musky lakes in the state.

Check out this link for some info.

They have been planting them since the 80s and I guess some have gotten big by now:D Time to buy some bigger rods, heavier line and gigantic lures.

Man, that would be a cool to hook into one of those big toothy fishes! Like I said, I have heard rumors but have yet to see one. When you land one in the SS take a photo will ya!

Here is the new(obviously used) 6 gallon Merc tank. The fittings match my '71 and I really needed the extra capacity. Longer trips out will be very nice.:D Believe it or not this one is in much better condition than the one that came with the boat.

My 5.5hp Johnson came with two 6 gallon tanks but for some reason I've only been using the Evinrude one.

Time to switch over to the Milemaster. I clearly will be spending lots of time this fall/winter working on restoring these tanks. For now they work great!

And a few more photos from our trip to Sanford Lake.

AMEN BROTHER:D

I would change that to ALL of us have them. I know I wouldn't trade mine for all the Starcarfts in the world. We have the special few that actually endures our fixation with tins.;)

HA, your killing me

LOL yeah we are quite a lucky bunch of dudes to be able to resurrect tin cans with approval from the home office:D

Well I'm pretty happy that I was able to buy these brand-new Pyle marine speakers for $30, free shipping:D They are 6.5" and should fit in a number of locations.

BTW I got them at less than the "buy it now" price by making an offer and they accepted it within minutes.

I should've offered less, but I knocked 5 bucks off the price, better than a sharp stick in the eye:D

If only I could find a good deal on a waterproof housing box for the Eclipse CD player...I'd be all set.

I'm glad to see a youngster fishing.... especially wearing a PFD at that age. I would point out that you may want to either move or cover the battery. I would hate to see him get any chemical burns if there is any gasses or acid leaking out.

The real question is........ what did he catch?

Yup he loves his Scooby-Doo thumbcaster and the Scooby-Doo PFD:D

I agree 100% on the battery...I was almost embarassed enough not to post this photo since it sets a bad example(but figured it may prompt a discussion that would be beneficial;)). I did lose the cover for that one and it needs to be replaced ASAP.

On that day I had an inline fuse blow on my trim and tilt so I had the battery out to check on it. Thanks for reminding me though, good advice for sure.:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

So I'm tenatively planning on heading out to Thornapple Lake this weekend for some Walleye/Musky fishing and hopefully camping too.

It's another top Musky lake here in Michigan and I'm dying to catch one(they are known as the "fish of a thousand casts" for a reason).

Hopefully I will be able to troll for hours and scope out the structure and if I get lucky maybe get a strike that doesn't break my line:D

Muskie, fish of a hundred casts. If you're on Lake St. Clair that is. Can't keep them from eating my bass plugs out there. Walleys guys have problems with the Muskie too.

We'll have to do a day trip out to LSC when we all get the Starcrafts running. I'm sure Kenny would be up for it, we can follow Broadcast around. Judging by his fish pictures he's on a first name basis with the fish around here.

Good to see the boat getting some quality usage. I'm stuck in I/O hades right now. I only wish someone would have warned me about inboards, somebody..........IO's aren't that bad.

I'll get my fixed, it's only a matter of time. Seeing you on yours gets me pumped. Good job bud.

Thanks, Don...I'm looking forward to getting out on St. Clair, I prefer large lakes to big ponds:D

My opinion is known as far as I/O's go...if I go inboard it's gonna be a diesel;)

So I didn't make it to Thornapple due to a lousy weather report...but we were out on Round Lake for a good part of the weekend. I passed another check by our local conservation officer, he's a nice guy and called in to check my fishing license since I lost it apparently.

We caught several dozen bluegill and had a great time dodging jet fleas and 'glass tubing rigs peeling around. The Merc has been starting on the key after cranking it for 5-10 seconds, but clearly the carbs need to be rebuilt to be closer to 100%.

The new fish finder is working great, it just needs a proper marine GPS to accompany it:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I started another thread about this issue but have gotten no insight yet.

My trim/tilt bracket only works when the motor is at idle-10mph range. If I try to trim it up while planed out it does not work. It's kinda strange and will work as soon as I slow down.

Any ideas?

BTW no work on the boat lately since we've been busy building new shelves in out basement and garage. Too many boat parts, gas cans and camping gear laying around:)

Great family project though and the boys helped out a bunch. Once we finish these we can get back to the boats.

The plan is actually to finish my 12' AeroCraft project so we can get some experience painting a boat and trailer before we tackle painting the SS.

I've got some rustoleum smoke gray that I'm gonna use on both trailers and the bottom hull on both boats. Should have some progress this week on the little boat.:)

I know the feeling on the crowded garage. An 18footer pretty much takes up the whole thing. I believe i would ditch the metal gas cans. They all rust on the inside. The progress is great, keep fishing with the family. :D

Some photos of the 6.5" Pyle marine speakers, and the Eclipse cd player.

There's basic wiring info on the unit, I'm not sure if I need to run the yellow and the red if I'm wiring it straight to the battery and not the key.

These came with the speakers, I'm guessing that the metal tabs are to help avoid vibration maybe?

I think I would run the red and yellow to the +. Those tabs are for mounting the speakers on thin material like the rear deck of cars. You clip them to the material and screw through them. Gives the screws something to hold on to.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

The yellow on the CD/Radio is for the memory... it needs to be constantly connected to the battery so the radio "remembers" the stations it's tuned to. It uses virtually zero current so it's not going to drain your battery in a hurry. The red should go via your accessories positive so the stereo is off when the accessories switch is off. This means you can play the stereo without the ignition being on, but even if you forget to turn it off at the stereo head unit, it will still switch off when you turn the acc switch to off before storing the boat away after a good weekend's fishing. The black goes to earth/ground on your main busbar or direct to the negative on your battery, doesn't matter which way you do it. Hope this helps.
