Hey buddy, which of the dollar stores did she find those at? I have a bunch in here in the tri city area so I may end up making some raids on em!

"I'm thinking about this as a possible layout for the foam. The pink piece would be cut down smaller. It would leave room for the ski locker and drainage to the bilge. Open to suggestions here."

Like the idea but you will need to protect the pink from the skis coming and going. Sure you have already thought of that.

J we got them at the Dollar Tree store, I'm sure you have some around there somewhere.

Banana, I do plan on riveting in some aluminum similar to what Ezmobee did with his locker.

Gotta gluvit first and then I can get to it, I love working with aluminum and rivets:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I got the bow piece of the deck cut last night and got all three pieces test fitted.:)

We have located a supplier of swim noodles for a buck(dollar store) each so I'm going to send Roslynn out with the boys to buy some tomorrow. That way when we're ready to get the deck permanently installed we can move forward.

I still haven't decided on the epoxy...Ezmobee said that when he got the cheaper resin he used a lot more of it than he would've liked...so I was leaning toward the west systems for that reason.

The Clarkcraft prices are a little better so I may order from them, but if I am ready to epoxy this weekend I will need to run out and buy it locally.

I didn't apply the gluvit yet since we hit a little cold spell, but warmer weather is on the way:D

I dont think he sais the epoxy was cheap(ClarkCraft). The plywood we used sucked it up. It was that aurocco wood. My epoxy came out hard as nails and smooth as a bar table. The epoxy was formulated to seep very well as stated on their website.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Well it seems that my countless hours of checking craigslist for boats and gear have paid off again:D

Picked up these two seats for a total of $15(american) and I'm pumped about the deal. I did drive 45 minutes each way but it was a nice ride.

The white one is extremely high quality and really comfortable. It will be the helm seat and will be perfect on the pedestal and a new lockable swivel. The grey one is decent and will probably go on my 12' AeroCraft.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I've been following your project. Your detailed posts and pictures are great. I have an 83 FM16 that I just pulled the carpet up to replace and found the aft section of decking rotten. Your posts and all the contributors have been a great help. I've pulled up that section of plywood, cut & fit the replacement section from marine plywood, sanded the remaing floor and am now ready to cover with resin. I found a few broken rivets in the stringers I'll replace first. You have inspired me to extend the casting platform another 14" to butt up against the steering console. I'm considering fabricating a right side console to protect the passenger seating area. I also thought about adding a rear casting platform. I'd like to move as much weight forward as possible. The 90hp inline six makes it sit a little low in rear. I've already fabbed a 12 gallon gas tank to slide under the original casting platform, I thinked that helped. I'll post some pics soon. Keep up the good work, love to watch your progress.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

River Rat, welcome aboard. We like our older starcrafts and would love to see some pics of your rig. That thing will surely fly with the 90hp Johnnyrude.:)

My 80hp merc pushes the boat well and I can't wait to get it out in a few weeks.

I'm considering this Minn Kota, since it is a bow-mount at a good price(normally $300+).

Not sure if I really want to clog up the bow with a motor since it's easy to board the vessel currently.

Looking forward to warmer weather all week and getting this gluvit done. I have been finishing the seam rivets with the wire wheel to make sure the epoxy will adhere to the bare metal.

On a side note, my progress has been delayed somewhat due to the Michigan State University basketball team doing what they do...another final four appearance. The games have been cutting into quality boat time:eek:

This one makes 6 final fours in the last 12 years.:D

Sounds like a Merc tower 'o power to me

Look into a removable mount. That's what I plan to do.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

My inline six is a 1986 Mariner, runs great but pretty crapy for trolling. I just put a new Minnkota Power Drive V2 with detachable mount on mine. It's 55 pounds of thrust is more than enough for the 16 footer. After fighting with an old cable drive Minkota with 35 pounds of thrust I could kick myself for not replacing it years ago. The difference is like night and day. I have to comment on all the focus put on sealing the hull. I bought my boat new in 83, for 10 years or so it only went in the water to fish the day, the past 4 or 5 years it's moored on a dock all summer long at Lake Wallenpaupack, it doesn't take on water, not a drop, even with that big 90 twisting every thing.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Finally got some pics of my boat. Being new to iboat and using forums, I don't know if I should just contribute to your thread or start a new one. More pictures to come. I'm still trying to figure out where all the fasteners are on the casting deck. One thing I discoverd a few years back is what to use to clean the hull. Take notice to raw aluminium part of my hull. It looks brand new! I used an acid we have in the car dealership for cleaning aluminium and wire wheels, it does an awesome job.

Welcome! If you're going to be documenting a project start a new thread in the Resto section. Otherwise, the Starcraft section would be fine. Nice boat!

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Good news. I was able to get the boat registered in my name today:)

The sticker is still good until 2012 so all I had to pay was a $2 transfer fee and $60 in taxes. Feels good knowing that is finally settled.

I have a bit of an ordeal to go thru to register my 12 footer but that is a story for "The Loon" thread;)

Nice rig river rat:)

I cut out some reinforcing backing plates out of 3/4" ply for my pedestal seat bases.

I don't want my seats flexing at all so I will be epoxying them to the underside of the deck prior to bolting the bases down. I will have some pics but trust me it's nothing too exciting.

These are the ugly but effective back plates for the pedestals. They will be epoxied and bonded to the deck, and will make the bolts hold onto 1.5" of plywood rather than only 3/4".

HEY.....my gluvit didn't come with an applicator, whats up with that? ;)
With all the pin holes I've found, I'm glad I ordered a gallon, plan on doing the whole bottom and whatever else I've got enough for.

BTW, I like those switches....cool!

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

We tried to make the AeroCraft feel at home in my mini boatel for the night.:D

The fumes really weren't that bad. I had a fan going, the garage door open, and we wore masks, and no problems.

Nice score on the seats. Now if we could all get those kinds of disccounts we'd be laughing.

Keep up the good work. I'll be doing my aft section rivets and seams now that the engine amd leg are out so I can scrub in there.
