Re: 78 starcraft ss redo

Well the weather has been somewhat ok the past few weeks. I got the trailer primed and painted, new wires and lights. Working on finding some rims and tires. The boat is going to be stripped next. It looks like the previous owner used latex paint on her. It shouldn't be that hard getting off. I did purchase a 2000 90 hp Yamaha outboard. Stay tuned for more updates. The fish are starting to wake up down here.

Looking good so far, always smart to rewire the trailers and even new lights.

Oh yeah a 90 yam is perfect. Maybe somebody will want the old dorm fridge?

Re: 78 starcraft ss redo

Got up early this morning and went outside to start stripping the paint. Stripper was working fine but the scrape and wire brush method was to slow for me. So I needed a power tool, so I went to the garage and got the 3500 pound power washer and blew the the paint off. As you can see it worked pretty good, just a couple of spots need to be gone over. I
will coat it one more time with the stripper and power wash once more.

What exactly is this little piece of wood? It is located on the interior (right side) of the transom. It is attached with 3 carriage bolts through the aluminum. It seems like it would be some kind of extra brace. Any way it needs to be replaced the bolts are all rusty.

From the looks of where it is placed it may have been a reinforcement for a swim step, platform. It wasn't there from the StarCraft factory.

No need to replace it for the structure of the boat. Remove it and patch the holes.

That wood looks like a chunk of 2x2 someone stuffed up under the Z bracket as a backer for something on the outside of the transom. It figures that whoever put it there would use ferrous metal screws.

It must have been factory because the holes are square to accept the carriage bolts. I am just going to replace it maybe I will need it someday.

I seriously doubt they are factory. But if you wish, replace the bolts & seal the hole.

The transom skin could have been punched square, but there might have been minimal corrosion of the aluminum at the thru hole. And tightening the nut, pulled the square shoulder of the bolt into the thru hole, squaring the hole.

I've never heard of SC factory using steel carriage bolts on a solid piece of wood under the Z bracket, the PO did that and I would bet on it.

+1 - I'm with WM. The factory would use the same hardware for the other 3/8" bolts through the transom.

JB has the square hole explanation. I bet when you take it off, the holes in the AL will have some flaring on the inside.

I know looking at pics on the ole interweb isn't always the best, but is that chunk pressure treated? It appears that way to me from a few miles away.

No not PT. Thanks for all the input. It just had me confused why it would be there in the first place.

I forgot you are in Cumming, so you are not that far away, neighbor. Glad it's not PT.

I got the outside of the hull done, 8 coats of System 7400 by Rustoleum. Now on to the interior.

Whats Rusto 7400? Low-voc version of 'normal' alkyd rusto enamel?

I put two coats of Rusto's zinc chromate primer, followed by 8 coats of Rusto aluminum paint on the bottom, sanding between every 2 coats, then 8 coats of black. The 7400 is Rusto's high performance direct to metal alkyd finish.

Re: 78 starcraft ss redo

I bet that 7400 would be hard to beat anyway, but esp w/ the enamel hardener added.
