Re: 78 starcraft ss redo

Second week of work, found 3 mice nests, plywood was eaten by ants or termites, they even ate through the foam flotation.

Welcome to the iboats dry dock, tin division.

Ugh, at least half eaten foam should be easier to remove.....

Did your SS come w/ an OB?

Re: 78 starcraft ss redo

This was all I got done before it started to rain. The transom came out pretty easy, I thought it would have gave me a problem. I need to get it flipped over so I could get the bottom stripped and get some work done on the trailer. Then I could get it in the garage to finish.

No outboard, I have been looking around, I think around 70 hp would do just fine.

really getting at it Jim. Good looking boat! I have the same one in my yard...but its a 73. My 60 horse put my wife and I at 33 mph for an FYI...I would go 70HP if possible tho..why not!

Welcome to the site!

Don't limit yourself in your outboard search. Lots of good motors up to @90hp would serve you well too. If for no other reason to grab it cheap & sell it high to fund the boat resto.

OK, any special way in removing the outside piece of trim. Also is the plastic rub rail insert available anywhere. If not what could I use as a replacement.

Why do you want to take inner trim & rub rail channel off?

The Starcraft vinyl insert is @$200 (or more) IF you can find it:

A few other options discussed as well...

I was planning on putting carpet. With the carpet under the rub rail it won't peel up that easily.

Both should be riveted on. So you'll have to drill out the rivets.

I'd consider marine vinyl over carpet, but I likely wouldn't use either on top of the gunwale. It has been done successfully w/ both though...

Ditto with JB,
I wouldn't' carpet or vinyl the top of the gunwale. I had a 71 SS and the water would run down the length and off the end rather than in the boat.

I have worked on a couple with carpet on top of the gunwales, and the backer the top and sides is riveted to is a little narrower to accomodate the carpet and still have the aluminum rub rail channel fit. The rub rail channel is screwed to the boat and the screws are accessible after sliding out the rubber portion.

I carpeted mine along the side rails since it originally had carpet there. I used the home deport indoor/outdoor carpet glue and a 3" putty knife to push it under Look at this post and then go to post #97 there is a good picture of the carpet under that aluminum piece and it is still same way today http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...project-begins-splashed-7-15-10-a-329927.html

A little slow this past week (Thanksgiving and the kids home from college) I did get the rub rail off, it was held on with nuts and bolts. It will be getting flipped over this weekend.

Nice project. I had no idea termites ate the inside of boats. Wow!
What color are you going to paint it, if you paint it?

I think I am going with the starcraft white and navy blue. I don't like the po paint job.
