Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

So I am checking out pricing for all the little parts and pieces needed to put the axles back on the trailer. Also the Brake actuator. It is an Atwood. Called Atwood up directly to see if they carried parts for it. Turns out what I have is a 1963 "Mustang" actuator. Long out of production. I figured out I can put some 5" bolts through it to get it connected back. I have not tested the master cylinder yet. Hopefully it is still good, or I can rebuild it. Getting a cap for it might be a problem however.

Had no luck this evening with finding the correct parts like square U-Bolts the correct length. Enough Shackles and Bolts/Nuts. The equalizer will need to be bought online, unless I have better luck tomorrow. There is a local Trailer sales place and several marines sales places I have yet to check. Crossing my fingers in hopes they have what I need. Most of the online places I checked only have part of what I need, and shipping is outrageous.

I did manage to get the leafsprings bolted back together. Used Machine bolts (Grade 5) and Metal Locknuts. Will still put a spot of weld on them before I put them in, once I get or rent a welder. On one set the second largest spring must be bent, as it does not seat correctly. I will put up a picture tomorrow to show what I mean. I thought these were made of spring steel but it appears to only be hot rolled steel. Maybe I can put it under the press and get it curving back the way it should. Before you say anything, yes I understand that things must be done correctly and cautiously when it comes to bending something like this in a press. Been lucky in my past life and never got hit by anything the flew out of a press, and I have worked with some big ones. 400 ton Danley if I recall, or was it 800?

Weekend is getting close, hope you all are ready and get plenty of sunshine to get working on your projects :)

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I cannot say the trailer is complete, the way GT1M did....good job BTW GT looks great man.

But.....

I can say I have the wheels back on :)

DSC00922.jpg

I got some reflectors to put on but need some advise...where do they need to go?

I know red goes to the rear and yellow towars the front...what about the white ones?

I was planning on putting the large red on very back, then the oval reds on rear sides.
Yellow ovals in front of the fenders.

Would the white need to go on the a frame part between the coupler and the fenders?

Hey Trooper check a local tractor place for parts for your trailer, you would be amazed as to what those guys normally keep as stock items.

I found what looked like a little hole in the wall place. Walked in, told them I needed some equalizers and square ubolts, suspension bolts/nuts, shackles. They made the ubolts while he was digging up all the small parts. $1.25 and I was out the door.

I don't know if I have the nuts/bolts too tight or if it is just stiff from being new. But the trailer is solid now, not loose like it was before. That along with the wheels haiving loose lugnuts (I took them out by hand) is what led to the tires being wore the way the were, see earlier post on that.

Tomorrow I hope to have the coupler/brake actuator working like it was intended to.

Hey Troop,

The trailer is looking real nice all prettied up and settin on its rollers, awesome job!

The finishing details will fall into place before you know it and it'll be ready for the boat...

Glad to hear that all the new hardware has the trailer feeling nice and solid...should definitely keep from wearing out the tires...

Don't know if this is DOT approved, but this is where I would place the reflectors...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I found this today..

http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/standards/conspicuity/trlrpstr.html

I think I have things where they need to go. Really shouldn't be using the long ones, but I added them anyway. I think it turned out OK.

I slid the clear one's up a little
DSC00924.jpg

The smaller red and yellow I just put where the original's were. Used revits for all
DSC00925.jpg

Got the actuator put together. What a pain....one of the bolts/bars...was rusted in place. I drilled it out with a 3/8 drill after getting a pilot hole 1/8" started. It pounded out quite nicely after that.
I used grade 5 - 1/2" bolts. Had to cut some tubing for the bottom two. Not a whole lot of side force is on these so should be OK. I wanted pipe for added strength but couldn't find any. Had to drill the shackle and lever parts to 1/2" from 3/8" , all I had was a wood spade drill bit. I did a little grinding on it and gott the holes drilled. Turned out pretty good.
DSC00926.jpg

I may try to get the electric lights put on tomorrow. If I can find what I want at a decent price. Otherwise I will wait and order some online.
Next after that will be finding a master cylinder to replace the original. It is siezed up solid. I may try soaking it in oil but have my doubts about it actually working again.

I also need to fabricate the innner fender wells. I will be putting a coat of CSM/resin on them so will mount them temporarily till I get the supplies for glassin.
Which I hope is within the next month!

Hope you all are having a safe productive weekend.

Thanks JB. I tried the vinegar trick on the chains and other smal parts. I left them in too long. OK, I forgot about them....for a couple weeks.

They are pitted beyond use.

I was just doing a search on Autozone, Found what I think is a perfect match, '63 fairlane master cylinder.

Will have to check it out.

That might have been a tad too long:facepalm:

Good deal on the Fairlane part. Hope it works!

I have had a lot of luck using ATF or diesel to free up frozen parts.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

OK so I am starting to think again about the amount of materials I will need. I want to ensure I have enough materials to finish, but not so much left over for a second boat.....or do I?

I started out with some measurements.

First some ground rules.
All measurements were made in Inches.
I have included extra for tabbing where needed.
I will have to find the area (L x W) to find the Square Inches needed.
When I buy the CSM/1708 I need to know the Square Yards (SQ IN / 1300).
For Resin needs I have found a couple different formulas.
1708 Biax ... 1 Gallon wets out 4 square yards
1.5 OZ MAT = 1 Gallon covers 4.2 square yds or.... for 50" CSM - Need approximately 32oz resin per yard (there are ~150 oz of resin in a Gallon)

I will provide data for different areas of the repairs keeping CSM and 1708 separate, then provide a tally at the end.

Transom - I plan on 2 layers of CSM and 1 of 1708.
Area is 46? x 43? = 258 Sq In.
CSM = 516 Sq In.
1708 = 258 Sq In.

Hull ? I need to replace the layer of glass that was above the balsa core I removed. Again I plan on 2 layers of CSM and 1 layer 1708.
Area is 46? x 205? = 9,430 Sq In.
CSM = 18,860 Sq In.
1708 = 9,430 Sq In.

Stringers (figured both as one, the boat isn't 33' lol)
Area is 20? x 400? = 8,000 Sq In.
Same 2 layers of CSM and 1 layer 1708.
CSM = 16,000 Sq In.
1708 = 8,000 Sq In. (I will be wrapping entire stringer + tabbing)

Bulkheads (3 ea) same 2 layers CSM and 1 layer 1708 ?
Area is 33? x 32? = 1,056 Sq In. x3 = 3,168 Sq In.
CSM = 7,128 Sq In.
1708 Tabbing = 1,584 Sq In. (8" tabbing)

Motor Mounts (2ea) same 2 layers CSM and 1 layer 1708?
Area is 15? x 38? = 570 Sq In. x2 = 1,140 Sq In.
CSM =2,280 Sq In.
1708 = 1,140 Sq In.

Deck - CSM on two sides 75? x 216? = 16,200 Sq In. x2 = 32,400 Sq In.
CSM = 64,800 Sq In.

Deck - 1708 Tabbing ? 12? x 432? = 5,184 Sq In.

Totals
CSM = 109,584 Sq In.
1708 = 25,596 Sq In.

Converted to Sq Yds.
CSM = 84 Sq Yds.
1708 = 20 Sq Yds.

Resin required using formulas above:
CSM = 18 - 20 Gallons
1708 = 5 Gallons

Earlier it was suggested by WoG that I could start out with 25 yards (1 Roll) of 1.5 oz CSM Chopped Strand Mat)
10 yds of 1708 Biaxial cloth and 15 Galons of Resin.
I want to trust Wood's estimate but after doing my own figures don't want to be too short.

Please help!

Well I don't want ta do the math cuss it hurts my brain but you do have a big boat and lots of area to cover. Just check your measurements again and if you come up with close to the same amount go for it! Check 3 times and buy once.:rolleyes: :D

I only quick checked your first math in each category...the only major discrepancy I found was the transom calculation...

See the red notations above...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Here's where you're making your mistake. CSM and 1708 is not sold by the sq. yard. Is sold by the running yard or 3'. It's 50" wide sooooo... a yard of CSM is almost 1.75 sq yds. The way I calculate what I'll need is by visualizing how it will go on. i.e. Transom will need a 50" piece by 43" or about 1.5 yards per layer. Stringers if they are 12" tall and there are two of them and they are 20 ft long then that would be like covering a piece of wood that is 4' x 20'. That would be about 6 yrds per layer. I think you get the idea. Try it that way and see what you come up with.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I was actually thinking that I needed to consider the 50" width, just had not done the math to get 1.5 yrds, but I guess it is.

Getting my chalkboard back out.

Thanks for the help guys.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Took the old over-engineered water collector down.

Put up this new hoop-house inspired, water shedding structure. Cost me half what the first one did.
DSC00927.jpg

Wish I had done a little thinking before I started on it though. With hind sight I would have used a 10' secition on the center of each "hoop" with 2ea 5' sections on the end of the hoop. Thinking that may ease the pressure on the joint.
hoops.png

The reason being, if you look closely you will see that both end hoops are laying on the gropund. These pulled out of the coupler during construction. I was in a rush to get it put up, so the glue might not have set too. Leaving them over night and will put them up in the morning. (Update: They still pulled out - too much strain. I ended up using the 2 coupler method and work quite well.)

I used rebar drove into the ground to place the hoops over. wrapped 2x4's up the sides of the plastic to hold it down. I may put my tent stakes back in tomorrow. used remnants from the old structure to zipt tie across the top to keep the spacing of the hoops.

What you think?
