Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

i read the first 50 or so pages of this thread tonight. Awesome work, not sure if my Ebko will take that much or not. As for the paint when you are sanding, My Ebko (1978 18' think it is the Executive Trihull) has the grey bottom, red stripe and metal flake at the top from the factory. Might be a repainted hull there.

Once again, beautiful work, I have a bad feeling I will be reading this thread many times while I work on my poor boat in the South Dakota winters.

I read all 80 pages. Nice work on the boat so far. I am glad I am not messing with the outer hull. Hope to start coring my stringers and transom next friday. I keep seeing you refeer to PB, not sure waht that is, going to have to read quick tho, only have 4 days a month to work on the boat.

But again, great work, and be careful at splash time, dont want the bottle of champaign damaging the gel.

Thanks for stopping in RC...hope all that reading wasn't too boring...I try to keep it spiced up as best as I can ;)

Every late model 70's Ebko picture I can find has the same red stripe and paint over metal flake... I'd be interested in knowing if your main hull is paint or gel...just to see how they were from factory...I'm guessing mine was gel at one time, but could be wrong... If I can help out anyway let me know...

Troop, I've got a HF HVLP Gravity FEED gun with a 2.5 tip you can use when the time comes to do your gelcoating. I can ship it down to you at no cost so let me know if you want to use it or if you want to buy the Hot Pot.

I tell you what trooper, I am on my way home for a wedding right now, when i am home i will grab some photos of the original paint and interior parts on my boat, from what I can tell original upholstery and trim. As far as telling gel from paint no clue how to tell that, all i know is my paint looks just like what you sanded down to.

That means no matter what you do, anything will be an improvement!

Lunch break!

While I eat and cool off...give you all a little update....

Got up at 6 am...rolled out the compresser bout 6:45...started sanding.....guess I got about an hour in and the airfile started sticking real bad...as in not oscilating....would slow down...bumped it and work again for a few...then back to sticking and stopping...put some oil in it.... the model I have is an older high dollar one...has place for oil on side....plus I have been putting oil in the air inlet...seemed to help for a little bit..thyen started slinging oil all over the place..this is when I realised that the side oil was for the slide...just keeps oil on it....so...wiped it off till clean...and the thing was still acting up so headed to HF for a replacement...this thing brand new was lsower than the old one when it was acting up :( ....so...started thinking....and connected the portable aircompressor to my big tank...lots of volume now...and the old file runs fine...the new one still slow.....store only had 2...not chancing taking it back and doing the same thing...so..took the shoe off the new one and put it on the old one...still cheaper than a new shoe from the local auto pint place...and now things are working good.

The compressor does run hot though...put it in the shade didn't help much..so putting a fan on it see if that helps...not sure if it keeps shutting off from heat or what..when motor slows down..has a bad cluck..could be the loose belt...

Forgot to mention....this thing will smash the carp out of your fingers if you put them in the right place while it is running!

I sure hope I am using this thing right though....so far just doing one side...more pressure on the leading edge of the glass i put down on the keel...45 degrees one way....back and forth...then switch to other 45 degree...back and forth...seems to be working...just don't want to introduce waves...finding I have alot of low spots that need filled...I'm guessing if over 1/16" I need to put glass in them...lower I can go with filler?

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

Ah, yeah, I was complimenting the compressor & inline sander. Your efforts are pretty good too though

BTW: The strake looks really straight & crisp in that from the stern shot...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

got the otherside looking like this one..found out I need to change the paper sooner than I have been...only problem with the compressor today was that when it fills up the motor slows way down...makes a bunch of clunking then dies if I don't drain it fast enough...so few trips up/down the ladder...got tired of sanding so filled some low spots...and ran out of resin :(...so will sand what I can tomorrow then will be a few weeks before i can get some more resin...sure I can find something to sand while I wait :)

Your commitment to this project continues to amaze... This boat has required more cosmetic surgery than Michael Jackson (but, personally, I think the Ebko's nose looks better)... Maybe you should name it "thriller" instead of therapy...
