Re: 76 Hammond El Dorado V1950 Restoration

I was originally going to titled and registered in Indiana, but then after I got the paperwork together they said it needs to be title in Kentucky first. Then Kentucky registered it but then found out I needed something like a title search from Indiana BMV that it is not register, titled, or stolen.

Well its back in KY BMV hands. I copied them on the email trail and they could not believe it also. I appreciate the Ky side for helping me out. But I'll be happier when the title in my hands.

I may just work on the trailer for now, it needs cleaning, painting and electrical work.

Well I'm back, but I must apologize to whoever I stole their Karma from :faint2::faint2: I have good news that I received the Title :D the bad new is on the day I received it. but before I knew it was here I was hospitalized with a type of cellulitis staph or strep infection . I am now back at home but will be awhile before I can get back to work on a lot of things. Still things are happening today my 52 was cited as an inoperable vehicle. I was the only one at home and had go limp out start her up an move her to prove to the officer it wasn't so. Hope my luck will improve or just keep the bad things from happening. Take care and see you later:D

Nice work on the teardown - sorry to hear you are under the weather. That nice clean transom area almost makes me want to work on a glasser.....almost. :D

Mrdjflores, I've been reading your posts glad you didn't have to give up the boat. If its sitting, covered and not burning any money, you could probably ignore it until funds become available.

It's a little cold outside so, I got to cleaning up the shed 16X20, Wednesday. Decided to get it insulated. Probably won't do what Trooper did to to his garagemahall-DryW.:) Just insulate and cover with plastic. I have a 220 ceiling heater that I'll also install.

Then its off to teardown of a motor and outdrive. I may still build/mockup the transom and stringers and FG in the spring.
I can use the kitchen floor up here, SWMBO does not come north very much. She only been here about five time in the last three years since I'd owned the place.

Sometimes my leg or legs will get me down, but since I'm on the mend I better get back working on something.

Got a question for the Fiberglass guru's.

1. Can I use some type of degresser for this then acetone the carp out of it? I remember a type of 3M product and something called purple cleaner,

100_3662.jpg

or do you think I should break out my last can of tri-rike ( Tricloethelean) I think that stuff may eat the fiberglass. use in well ventilated area with respriator and or oxygen pack. I do know a soaked rag with it, on a heavily painted car will strip it down to the bare metal in about ten minutes.

This is the oil from the engine when the boat flooded it seaped up the few limber holes and into the stringer areas.

I know when you paint a car you want to get the surface clean before sanding or else you grind the dirt into the paint. I assume this would hold ture for fiberglassing.

Since it's warming up the degreaser should stay liquid.

I'd use some Simple Green and then some TSP and then Grind it and wipe down with Acetone before glassing.

Thanks, Wood

Another question? when doing the transom, would it be a good ideal to glass a few one inch (CSM/1708) strips in, before placing the ply to give a gap for the PB.This would give a spacer so as to not squeaze out the PB too much.

Just a thought

I use the super clean in the purple bottle for de-greasing, the stuff is amazing.

Someone must have gotten bit by the spring boating bug. :D

Been doing some grinding  Yea suprise surprise. I know no pics didn't happen, will get some soon. Well "deep subject" I have pressure tested the fuel tank. "FAILED" It had two definite pin hole leaks, there are a few other areas on the tank that looked worst but didn't leak. I going to check what the inside looks like, then decide to repair or replace.

Water,
yes it's aluminum. It around 30 gal tank, 18in X 67in. It about 7.5 inches tall, from bottom to top of filler tube. Inside looks clean, like it justs need the shellac removed, then it could be reused. Some of the plastic Iboat tanks look good also. Wish I could get a camera in there. I may hunt up a welder or radiator shop and ask them about the tank. I wonder if I sand blast it, then weld it up? That way any more holes show up they could be repaired.

There's a tank repair product guys pour inside them to seal them up and then any pitting on the outside is filled in with JB. The poly tanks cost an arm and a leg, if your tank isn't too bad you could repair it.

Re: 76 Hammond El Dorado V1950 Restoration

I actually have something that may work after the tank is cleaned up. It's like an aluminum welding rods that uses a propane torch to braze the hole over. I used it once on a 150 year old brass bosum lamp that I repaired back to a oil lamp. Someone changed it to an electrical lamp. They poked a hole in the resivour tank. I have a few neat looking lamps that people converted from oil lamps to electrical that I converted back. I bought the rods at a auto swap meet, years ago when I was trying to repair that lamp. The vender was repairing radiators with it and a few other items. I haven't had any problems with that oil resivour, but a fuel tank would have a pressure build up. And gas may be more soluble than my kerosine lamp. Well the hole was about a quarter inch diameter and these are pin holes so it may work. It does double duty as a filler and sealer. Luckaly, :D I know were the rods are still stored. Having two storage locations sometime are a bother.

If you've used those aluminum rods w/ success, you're the 1st I've 'known' that did. Seen lots of good stuff about them online, but not a very high success rate here & on another forum...... If anyone uses them w/ success, I'd like more details & pix before, during & after. PM me 52Ford if you have any.
