Greetings to the Starmada and all others,

I was just given a 72 Chieftain from a good friend and am getting ready to do some work on her. As this is my first boat ever, I am a bit of a rookie at what needs to be done. She has been sitting for 10 years. 7 of those years there has been a roof over it, the last three has been open to the elements.

I am told that the engine runs and the outboard is in good running condition. The deck on the other hand is not in good health. The outside deck is weathered and needs to be replaced. The cuddy is fine except for the fact that an cat or two have been living in there for a few years and used it as a bathroom. The cabinets are pretty shot and are being removed and rebuilt. As far as the deck goes, I was wondering if the cuddy walls and the seating area have to be removed to r4emove and replace the deck? I was wondering to if you need to use marine grade ply of if standard exterior ply will work? I am under the impression that the glues are the same on the 2 types.

I have read a few posts on here of people rebuilding these boats have have got some good info from them. All the info that I can get would be greatly appreciated. Here are some pics and thanks in advance.

Re: 72 Chieftain restore

Well hello there Alvin and welcome to iboats, the iboats drydock and the Starcraft band of brothers!:D

That Chief is ugly, and oh so beautiful!:)

Pour yourself your favorite beverage and click on the "Starcraft Rebuilds" link in my signature. You'll have everything you need to know to rebuild that Chief right at your fingertips!

A couple of quick points to your opening post:

By your description it basically sounds like everything needs to come out and rebuilt. That's a pretty big job with the Cheiftain as you have a small apartment stuffed into a boat, eh.

Exterior ply is fine, the key is sealing it up with epoxy (or similar).

Looking forward to your project, cheers!:)

Re: 72 Chieftain restore

Hey guys thanks for the replies. I am looking forward to this build. Starting at free is always the best. I am going to add some more pics as I was in a hurry trying to get back to work from lunch. I seem to only be able to put small pics up though. Any suggestions on how to make the photos larger?
