MANNNNNNN, That looks great. It is amazing that you have gottn such a finish with a roller. Looks like all went in wll with the motor. I have found a motor and outdrive. You mentioned a template. I'd like to take you up on that offer. Let me know what i need to do. I've got to take out my old (inboard) transom and modify everything. What material (i.e. thickness and finish) did you use on your transom? Keep working at it, it looks great.

Brad,pm me your addy and i will trace it for you. Transom was 2 pc 3/4" ply, and then template is 1/2" ply mounted inside.

Dang it, I am a glass guy and have never looked at even one of you starcraft guys threads...until now! What a fine looking boat. Wouldve never guessed that you could get a tin boat like that. Your work is meteculously awesome! Love the paint and decking. So much so that this is enticing me to paint mine. Can you give me a breakdown of all the paints you used, quantities, where you got them and aprox cost? Not to mention, how much did your durabak end up costing? Again, excellent job and this is one starcraft I will keep up on:eek: Hell of a nice job.

Yeah, they're pretty neat. Come in all sizes and shapes too. Personally, I like this one a lot! Maybe I'll be able to find something similar at a bargain price.

thats a damn fine specimen right there.

bret is doing an incredible job on his. North beach did an incredible job.

but the great thing about these boats is you can end up with a decent looking boat without putting alot of money into it. mine came out halfway decent, and I only have about $1300 in it including what i paid, and about 6 weeks of work.

Wow, yeah, Id say that it awfully nice there! It is amazing how little work is actually needed on one of these. I mean hell I have been at mine for 5 months now working at least one day a weekend and am jusssssst now about to put in the deck:eek: Not to mention I am at about 2000$ in material alone...might have to look around for the "next" boat. Not converted just yet!

The etching primer is only for tincans though right? That is not something that would be needed for glass? Also, how much was the durabak and where did you find the best prices if you dont mind? Thanks for taking the time to answer me!

It's been a while scince I last posted, I managed to get the transom wiring sorta done so I could mount the transom cover. Then I was able to get the rubrails and bow and stern castings mounted. I still have to drill for the stern light, vents and gas fill.

Looks great Bret, You have done a fantastic job and been really great on the details. I do hope it all finishes out quick. Mine, on the other hand, i still have a long way to go. How did you arrive at the width of the stearn cover across the transom. Is that a factory standard or did you just do it the width that you thought would work the best.

Brad,

Factory standard was 15" I went with 18" to accomodate my particular fuel cell choice behind the jump seats

I've found two tanks that will fit on the side walls of the boat about 6" x 11" x 40" so that i can move the weight forward. Do you see that causing me any problems?

Brad,

I don't know, the factory had the 2 tanks behond the jumpseats in Mine, although I did move the battery to the cabin under the seats. Make sure they don't take up too much space by making the cockpit narrow as the boat does curve in at the floor, and six inches of floorspace equals a foot and a half (standard with plus added width of tanks and curve) width of the gunwales if you carry a straight line up to the top.

Re: 68 Starcraft Starchief 18' Cuddy Restoration

My friend that rebuilt the engine came over tonight, and we finished wiring up the motor, and what do you know, she ran!!:D:D This is just with the initial valve setting and timing, so the idle is a little fast, but she ran! Now we gotta get the outdrive rebuilt with new bearings, and The rest of the wiring buttoned up, but it looks like she may get wet yet this fall.
