'67 Holiday 18' - Make it Usable

After scrubbing her down, and without any buffing or waxing, I used some techniques I learned watching YouTube videos on how to match paint, and by mixing Rust-Oleum Hunter Green oil base with some yellow and red Rust-Oleum oil base, I'm getting pretty close.
I've also been watching YouTube videos for how to blend the new with the old so it isn't as noticable.
I've decided to keep the original paint and just do some touch-ups where needed.

Everything is ready for her first trip since I bought her. Did the transom repair.
Got both motors mounted with new impellers.
Both run and shift great and pee good.
I'm excited to take it out.

Good luck on your shakedown!

in the future when running in a bucket, make sure you have the water level a few inches above where the lower unit splits in order to make sure that the water pump is submerged. ... I'd go up to those lower mounts to be safe. It sounds like it was peeing so no-harm, no-foul this time. (y)

Yes, the barrel was clear full. That's after I turned it off. I need to raise the barrel some. But yes, I do appreciate advice.

yeah, looking at these pics, I can see the Suzuki doesn't have as steady of a stream as the mercury. The Suzuki needs to be deeper in water.

It was really fun taking her out for my first time.
I didn't find any leaks. We stayed out anchored for at least 5 hours.
.
I did notice a weird electrical short where if you grab two different pieces of metal on the boat you get a little itchy type sting. I do plan on going through the wiring.
.
Another thing is there's a small vibration when cruising above a certain speed. I'm thinking maybe the propeller may need balancing - in that there is a small chunk missing from one propeller.
.
Otherwise, I really feel good about everything and hope to have lots of fun trips with her.

Electrical issue like you say sounds like the battery is grounded to the hull.

So, I should probably create a main ground wire to the fuse block under the dash that runs back to the negative post on my battery, correct?

The negative and positive primary wires should be the same gauge wire and yes the fuse block ground must be on the same battery as the positive. Otherwise it will seek ground anyway it can and may use your boat for the path. This also causes electrolysis corrosion and will eat holes in aluminum.

I'll temporarily disconnect everything except the motor for now, and make sure it is directly connected to hot and ground.
For the daylight use I plan on using it for this summer, I only need the motor.

Regarding my propeller having a chunk broken off, I'm thinking I should get a new one because if it is vibrating from being out of balance, that could be hard on the lower unit.
So, I don't care to go fast, so would a smaller prop, or less pitch be a good idea to lessen the load on the motor?

Your logic is correct; less pitch will get you out of the hole quicker at the expense of some high-end speed.

What RPM are you able to hit at wide-open throttle?

Wow... something really munched down on that prop of yours! I'd say you definitely need a new prop with that much missing. It wonder if it also spun the hub when it took that whack. I'd also put a dial indicator on that prop shaft, rotate the prop by hand to make sure it isn't bent. If you don't have one, a screw in a wood jig clamped to the vent plate would suffice.

Propping a boat is almost a science. To give any kind of accurate advice on a prop a few things are needed. Motor Current prop pitch and diameter. WOT RPMs and speed. I know the 75 HP is new to the boat so that's up in the air I'd assume. So give what info you have and we can help you guess. :rolleyes:

They may have some used in good shape props that you could buy at a reduced rate and return for a different one if that one doesn't work out.

My guess with a light Holly 18', a 75 HP motor that a 17p x 13-1/4"d aluminum 3 blade would hit the mark.
