So we are thinking of replacing our chrysler 360s. They haven't gone more than one trip without problems. It just gets tiring. How much bigger are crusader captains choice 6.0s? We also don't safely go over 2300 rpms... That leaves us with 12 knots- tops. So do you guys think rebuild or replace? Hw much would it run? and where are they sold? Thanks

Re: 35 Alura Repower vs Rebuild

Well last weekend we had cooling problems. That was a belt. Oh um we can't start it because theres an ignition problem we have to bypass the solenoid. Exhaust leaks in both engines. Alternator belt snapped. We have a problem with the carbs running on 4 barrels when they shouldn't. With the rpms, when we get to 2400, they sound like they're laboring and it smells like burning. They die when docking sometimes, which sucks. Pretty much they die after running for a while whenever idling.

Ayuh,.... Repowerin' seems extreme, when all yer Problems are accessory related, 'n really nothin' to do with the long block motor,...

Rebuild the carb,... Replace the exhaust,... Fix the ignition,....

Service it, 'n replace the belts,...

We already rebuilt the carbs and fixed the ignition within a year.

Ayuh,.... I guess my point is,...
If a compression, 'n leak-down tests say the long blocks are Solid runners,...
The carbs, manifolds, 'n ignition can be replaced for maybe a couple grand,...

Everything you've mentioned so far, are simply Maintenance Issues, 'n not really a cause for a Total Repower,..

A Total Repower is gonna run 10 Times that amount,...

What do you think about the struggling at low rpms?

Ayuh,.... A dirty hull,..?? bad gas,..??

Don's got a list of possible issues up in the Adults Only section, pinned to the top of this forum,...

Certainly not dirty. She was repainted bout 5 months ago. Could it be, I don't know bearings in the engine? Don't even know if it's possible.

unless that money is just burning a hole in your pocket you should check the easy stuff first. what shape are the props in? how much 'stuff' do you have onboard? when was the last time she ran good and what's changed since then? do you do the regular maintenance or does a mechanic?...or is it done at all? points or electronic ignition?...last tune up? how old is the gas?

Re: 35 Alura Repower vs Rebuild

The last time time she ran well was not any time we owned er. We've only gone out 1 time since we got er in June without incident. The hole is actually getting pretty big. We've probably 9k into the engines. We have probably 3500 extra lbs than dry weight. Gas is about 2 weeks old. The props are very likely the problem. She didn't run when we got her, so i guess it improved. I fix some stuff but mainly a mechanic. We DEFINETELY do maintenance.... bout every week we fix things. I think it's electric ignition. Never had a full tune up, but overtime we probably replaced enough.

Re: 35 Alura Repower vs Rebuild

sounds like you've been throwing parts at problems. that gets real expensive and frustrating when the problem isn't solved. it really helps to work methodically. and, not to nitpick, but fixing problems isn't maintenance. maintenance is preventative...some items need to be inspected and fixed/replaced prior to their failure otherwise the result can be a bigger and more expensive problem.

as to your original question, most anything can be done with enough money. your best bet is to start with a compression test and determine exactly what shape your engines are really in. it's cheap and easy. would be best to start learning some of the basics. mechanics have a way of turning an expensive hobby into a money pit.

Ayuh,..... Well said,... I agree Completely,....

Diagnosin' issues, 'n fixin' the Problem is Way cheaper than just throwin' parts at it, especially when yer Payin' to get it done,...

Send an oil sample to blackstone labs. They can check to see if the engines are ok internally by how much metallic deposits are in the oil, or other contaminates. If the bearings are good, and the compression/ leakdown is good. there is no reason to swap entirely. Chrysler/ Mopar 360's are practically bulletproof.

Alright. I guess this weekend I'll do an oil change and compression test, check belts, clean the carbs, change fuel filter, and just clean up down there. What else?

make sure you don't have points. if you do then it might be time for new points & condenser. either points or electronic, check the rotor & dist cap. also check your spark plugs to see what shape they are in. that can also tell you how the engine is running. NGK Spark Plugs USA

Ayuh,.... Does yer compression tester use the extension hose,..??

If so, use it to run a quicky leak-down test,...

Rotate a piston Tdc, hold the crank, 'n put the air to that cylinder, 'n Listen,.....

It'll tell ya where any compression loss is goin',... Rings, or Valves,...
