Re: 35 Alura Repower vs Rebuild

By the way I don't know if you guys know I'm 14, and It probably seems like I don't have a dad... lol, but I do he's just mechanically clueless.

this is a great chance for you to not walk in your father's footsteps (that motivates every 14 yr old i've ever met). i can only imagine that he'd foot the bill for the possibly unnecessary repower. spend an hour running the tests everyone has mentioned. then make a decision based on facts, not guesses.

Re: 35 Alura Repower vs Rebuild

So the thought of winterization brought me here. My dad is pretty set on getting new engines, he'd much rather spend the money than deal with the problems. This does not mean we wouldn't take care of new ones, just literally 8/10 of the time we go out a new problem appears. You guys need to understand how incredibly annoying it is. Especially to him because he puts out so much money to get it fixed and it keeps breaking down. We just want to be able to bead a good 20 miles out and feel safe. I'd never go 20 with the engines like this. Maybe even on great nice days we could even get to the canyons, although I don't feel the hull is made for that. I think it's a good 25 miles and under boat but I could be wrong. Basically we want this boat to be the nicest alura out there. This is a list of everything I think would achieve the goal-
Plasdeck-$3500
Engine-$10,000
Engine-$10,000
Installation-$4,500
Two fuel tanks-$1800
Rewire-$3000
Thru-hulls-$200
Lighting-$700
A/C-$400
Gps-$3000
Radar-$1300
NMEA 2000-$400
Paint-$600
Upholstery-$500
Epirb-$600
Props-$900
Windlass-$1400
Swim Platform-$250
Outriggers-$1400
Gas-$1200

Total-$45,500
I know I over estimated on some stuff, and probably really under estimated on the things like rewriting, lights, nmea 2000, all the stuff that is impossible to find the right price. Anything you guys would add? Anyone have more accurate prices? Please don't worry about the price... This is all over a couple years probably. This winter is likely engines, props, and everything to make the boat functional. The boat is still in the water and it will likely get taken out in dec. then put back in in April. And matt167, if you're still around... I'm asking for some sort of project car for Christmas so I didn't give up on that if you were wondering.

Oh and with nmea 2000, what type of gauges can you get? Like if saw they had a fuel flow attatchment, would that show on the gps? I was thinking of a big 12 in garmin to replace all the dash gushes besides the rpms and the mechanical stuff. And finally would the crusader controls be electronic or mechanical?

We should have the new engines within a month. We didn't order them yet, but we're going around and asking for prices.

What I want to know is when we get it out of the water, can my uncle and I take the engines out? I mean is it hard? I know what to do but not being an expert obviously could I mess anything up?

Don't forget guys we're talking about a 35 foot liveaboard. Your Chryslers are probably pretty worn out old technology so probably either one of those engines will be more efficient. I use the term efficient in a relative way. You will still burn lots of gas. Its a big ol boat and its gonna take a big ol tank of gas to keep it moving. Personally I believe it should have a couple of Detroit Series 60s pushing that puppy around. Yup, spin those props right around. Your displacement speed MPG will be much greater than the gassers. But it's easy for me to sit here spending your money, so I think I'd go with a couple of 454's for that. Nothing wrong with what 500 says, but there's no replacement for displacement. You're not looking for high revving performance engines. You want good solid push through the entire throttle. That's my story and I'm stickin with it.

Yeah they would be much more than this whole project. Will the 5.7s be enough? The boat is about 13,500lbs now.(with engines). I mean the old engines a bit bigger but they are ya know, old. Think we could get around 20+ knots?

My guess is yes you can do 20 but that will be above 4000 rpm. I would shop around for a better boat at a lot less money than 45K

Yeah I want a 330 Grady. That would be a few grand more though. I mean obviously we'd sell this boat. Fix the engines as good as they can be, sell it for 20-25 grand. Then it would be 55k. My dad is attached to this boat though. I don't think this boat will be bad after the rebuild. My dad really doesn't know much about this though. All he knows is that he wants new engines as he is completely fed up with all this crap and he's taking the easy way. I'm basically the one figuring the actual project out. I'm telling him that if he decides to do the engines, he has to do everything. Rewire, plumbing, all that. He doesn't think we have to do anything extra and that scares me. We got quotes, $10,700 per engine, and $4,500 for the install. So I was right on the dot. So $26,000 for the engines. Then I mainly want rewiring done, plumbing, lights, and the rest is extra. Especially plasdeck and paint, which are very expensive. I'll do a good polish up job this winter though. This is what I want in order-
Gas
Engine
Rewire
Thru Hulls
Props
Lighting
Radar
NMEA 2000
Windlass
Epirb
AC
Second 12" GPS
Upholstery
Plasdeck
Paint
Swim Platform
Outriggers

Everything before upholstery will most likely get done. The rest is extra. I also forgot a generator. And before this I'm trying to get him to hire a marine surveyor since the boat is balsa cored. If the hull is bad, we'd be in a bad position. This boat already has about 25-30 into it. It didn't die yet and we've taken her out in some tough stuff. Like tight 4 footers that want to turn the boat their own way. And some idiots that operated her for the last 2 years that knew nothing when they bought the boat(us). Pretty bad learning boat but we learned quite a bit faster. With a bit more yelling and stress... What I really want to know though is will a car mechanic(my uncle), who has done many CAR resto projects; and myself be able to take the engines out ourselves? That will save some cost. I know the marina has to physically lift them out. I know a pretty good amount from this site, and we've both removed engines. Just out of cars. I think he's scared to mess something up. But what can you mess up if the new engines need gas and battery to run?

Re: 35 Alura Repower vs Rebuild

Before he spends a bajillion dollars on all this, I have been reading that the old luhrs are loads of junk. I really don't think it will be worth the money. I think we'll end up dropping 50k on it and only be able to sell it for at most 30k. Plus it's still not a great useable boat when we still own it. It can't make it to the canyons or out in 4+ foot seas. Would something like this be better?1980 Ocean Yachts 42 Super Sport Power Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com That would need a rebuild probably too. Engines rebuilt not replaced.
