So I am coming to a close on my new transom/deck install. picked up a new outboard (used, but new to me) yesterday, hung it to do a trial fit and wouldn't you know it, the gap in the transom hangers are about 3". of course my old was 1 1/2". never seen a gap of 3" before. will build the transom out here to fill the void.

check other outboards, see how big the gap is before you add another layer permanantly. a shim peice might do the trick

suzuki dh-55 i think is the number. 55hp, late 80's, power trim. definitely not a shim job, between my 1 1/2" transom and the edge of the transom mount brackets we're talking about and inch or so. thoughts?
