Hate to do this and brag a little but I see it all the time. Got this one for 2500 yes small crack in block and crack in manifold other then that it's mint. Would you have done the same? It's a 2004 stingray 180. Trailer was like new with brakes and new chrome tires and chrome fenders

Just install a new block I think and go boating.
My original thought exactly until I started digging into 3.0 blocks apparently GM discontinued then so they are becoming more and more of a commodity. So much so that the 4.3 costs less...

Looking at michigan motors I can get a long block for about 3300 and swap everything over to it comes with a 1 year warranty. Think I can plug away at that in a weekend or 2.

But if jb weld will hold temporarily ill run it like that and keep an eye on it.

If this is the Michigan Motors in the Waterford area I would be REAL careful dealing with them.

I took a high mileage van in to them for a motor rebuild. Changing motors is a PIA in them or I would have done it. Pretty sure all they did was wash it and give it back to me. Nothing but trouble from there, some their fault, some new issues. I lost patience and ended up selling it to get rid of the headaches.

Are you planning on doing the swap? If so, see if Schram auto parts can help you out with a short block. If they don't have one, betting they can find you one. It'll be used, but should be fine in a 2500 boat. Went to school with these guys 50 years ago (both 2nd generation at this business) . Don't know if they're still there or not, but they have a good reputation.

Is it Michigan Motorz the website?

They, along with Doug Russell and Marine Engines are probably the 3 go-to places for a new engine. @SavinRaven You'll have that $7500 boat in no time :D

Do you have contact information for for Doug Russell? And yes full disclosure I went into this with about an 8k budget with boat purchase price. Similar boats to this in this area are going for between 9k-10k pretty consistently.

So how hard is it to remove engine take everything off old one and put it on new one? Is this something achievable in a weekend?

Yes, a 5-day weekend. Plan on about 2 weeks end-to-end, as you will run into issues and have to figure things out and may need to buy a few bits and pieces.

Now i'm just going back and fourth about whether or not I pay for the crate engine or get reman'd cost difference is about 1200 but crate engine comes with 3 yr warranty where reman'd is a one year deal.

3 year crate engine warranty in a boat?

Unless you plan on keeping this boat a LOOONG time, the money for this motor is going to be very hard to justify. Consider that few will be willing to give you an extra dime when it comes to resale value. Because you've installed a new/reman engine makes the boat worth little if anything more than if it had a properly maintained original in it....

Interesting. As mentioned these boats in my area sell for between 9k and 10k all day long in this condition.

At 7k with a new engine on the high side I'll be just fine on resale in even 3 years.

Could be, in today's market, if these prices hold.

Just keep in mind we're talking about a 20 year old boat....

Negative Nancy its not even old enough to smoke a ciggerette here in OH. When I go to purchase a boat I only pay what I think its worth. Its about overall condition. I looked at a 95 the other day that was in mint shape. He had it listed at 7900 and I almost purchased that until I came across this.

But also thats exactly what Inflation is.. Prices go up on everything they dont come back down typically...

....maybe.

Just remember prices are woefully out of whack right now due to pandemic and supply chain issues. That's hopefully only going to be temporary. So the best chance at the biggest payout, if any, is to cash in now....ie. flip the boat right away with a new engine while demand is still high and supply still limited.

Otherwise...thought I saw that boat cruising Craigslist yesterday. My thought was new 4.3 or 4.5 for it provided the rest of the hull was still in good shape.

Cheap boats are out there if you look. Dirt cheap boats are usually because of a reason.

If a guy was so poor on maintenance that he let the block crack, what else did he not maintain?

I don't know for sure re. that vintage, but my guess is that the boat has wood stringers. It's current age is just about when they would be rotten if they were rode hard and put away wet.

The period that Stingray went to Volvo were not their best years. I toured their Hartsville plant in 2004 and I was not impressed.
