my smart craft speedo.

This changes everything  my bad, I was off in the wrong arena

Smartcraft uses a CAN bus, but .... that gauge will connect to the data link. The kit should come with instructions, but it basically gets daisy chained form the harness of other gauge. You do have to install the sensor to the water hose coming from the transom assembly (you kit number), then connect the sensor to a similar link which would be on the motor (remove weather cap) or it runs you to helm where it connects.

Merc talks about a paddel wheel speed-o which is used on most ski boats, its more accurate. Another way is to use one which links to the system and uses a gps from a chart plotter or such via NEMA

OK ! cool. I see where the CAN bus (blue cable) plugs into the harness... then there are a few plugs with weather caps on... at both ends... I'm running a digital SC1000 tach and the gauges are daisy chained. I will have another look and see if I can make a connection ! many thx...

BTW, the water pressure sensor it uses appears to be the same sensor that keeps failing and cost $160

I found the kit for about $60 in my neck of the woods ... old stock.. I'm willing to try. Unfortunately, I can't see a 2 conductor connector on my harness to plug it into.... wonder if there's a work around.... ugh... smart craft !

Right. Ok.. so I swapped harnesses when I did the repower and just checked the old harness and the 3 pin connector for speedo barb is there... my current one isn't! So, how crazy is it to rig something up - take my old plug and convert it to a cable that goes directly to the speedometer link cable hook up on the back of the gauge. It would be hose to barb to pitot sensor to my old 3 pin connector spliced to a cable going to helm and plug into link cable on back of speedo . Is that nuts? would it even work, or does it all HAVE to go through the harness to the CAN bus to TACH, then info travels to the speedo through the link cables. Follow me? I need a work around, or change the entire harness..... and I'd ugh.... rather not !

It HAS to go through the harness to the ECM and gets converted to a signal that is sent up the can buss to the speedo gauge.

The transom harness connects to the engine harness. Can’t you take it off your old engine and plug it into your new engine?

The other harness is TOAST .. like soaked in salt water, corroded beyond anything. I could always buy a new one ... But redoing the harness seems like a pain... can I replace the harness without pulling the engine? OR I suppose I can just go analog .... from pitot hose to a new , non smartcraft gauge, power it at the helm with AUX power somewhere... independent of anything running now. OR can I ?
Which is the worse headache?

Maybe buy a new transom harness? They aren’t vey expensive and just plug into your existing engine harness.
