Man, I'm scared to take it to a dealer now. They already robbed me. I told um a good mercury mechanic should be able to sync one carb & time it in 45 mins. But you charged me 2 hrs. labor. Well, it takes longer than you think. I said I'm glad it doesn't have 3 or 4 carbs. I know this is a good buddy help forum but there's a nice Amazon Card for you. I guess it's ok to gift??

And I have not adjusted or touched anything but the trigger link rod at the trigger to adjust timing unsuccessfully...

It looks like I was wrong. The linkage is working. Going to full throttle has moved the trigger counterclockwise.

I wonder if a magnet came loose under the flywheel?

I've had the flywheel off to replace the trigger and stator and flywheel looks new, both sides

I think the trigger magnets are different than the stator magnets. They may reside in a ring around the center.

If you are getting 25 BTDC at idle, what are you getting at max timing (full throttle)? Is it off the scale like 45 degrees or higher?

I don't know what full throttle timing is , manual says with engine off put it full throttle and back off that silver bolt from stop and then turn it clockwise until it hits stop and then turn 1 full turn and tighten nut at stop but wot timing is 28 degrees
I really appreciate you helping me Dave, I know it's Friday and you probably got things to do . Grateful for your help buddy. I hope we can figure this out without me having to take it to another dealer, I don't have the money, on fixed income you know

But that's if you have the timing , running, idle in gear set at 7 to 9 btdc . I'm just thinking something is off in the linkage at idle idk buddy
I've built race cars from the jig up , set timing 4500 rpm , but don't know much about 2 cycle boat engines obviously

About the point that FlyingScott brought up, that he did not think your motor was idling at 25 BTDC. If it was, it would be idling really fast like maybe 2000 rpm. Does it do that?

Yeah, that sounds correct. You set the timing arm to max (can do that with the throttle) then turn it over with the spark plugs out or disconnected and grounded. The silver bolt is the max timing adjuster. So, the manual specs max timing to be 28 BTDC? I think you stated the manual has idle timing at 7 - 9 BTDC? Remember the idle timing spec is only a range to get you in the ball park. You run the engine and fine tune the idle timing for proper idle rpm.

I don't have a tach hooked up yet but I'm pretty good or in the ballpark about RPMs. It's not idling high, in fact, if I go much lower it will shut off?

I swear I think something is messed up where the trigger link rod attaches at throttle idk and it's a new trigger from CDI ELECTRONICS , I had no reason to doubt it was timed wrong or anything until I got her out on the water next day. Very disappointing so I took it back to um told um what it was doing and a week later I hadn't heard anything so I went and got it and that's when I got into checking timing etc. But I never touched the idle screw after dealer ? Again, thanks for trying to help Beamer50

Any other ideas or thoughts after looking at the pictures of the linkage etc. I'm stumped. Beamer50

This is a picture of the same 40 mercury I found on YouTube, see how different the position of the trigger is , not touching the rubber stop ?
