2.5l 1977 marquise quits running when hot

[1977 marquise]

Went to the lake the other day. Boat was running good then just quit. Tried and tried to crank it back but couldnt. Got towed back went to autozone for new ign. Coil and it ran fine for 30 mins cut off again! Got home with the boat and it crunk up fine on the old and new coil. But when i was on the lake there was no spark goin to the plugs. Also when the key is in the on position motor not running the tack reads like 3k rpms and is real jumpy! Idk if its a short somewhere or what but i cant figure if out and i need to fix it asap! Anyone please help me.

What engine do you have really? Mercruiser never had a 2.3L engine.

Its a ford 2.3l with mercruiser outdrive 120hp...

Or a Volvo, we should probably wait for the answer from the OP as to what it is, could also be a 2.5 with a stray typing finger.

The engine says mercrusier 2.3ltr 120hp. The drive just says mercrusier. Idk anything else lol its the same engine thats in a 74 ford pinto or mustang

Post some pictures, you do not have a Mercruiser Ford 4 cylinder 2.3L engine. They don't exist.

Guess yall are right. Guy i bought it from said 2.3. So does that mean its a chevy and not a ford?

That is a GM 2.5 litre (153 cu. in.) engine. Was used by Mercruiser from 1963 to 1989. The drive you have is an MC-1, ratio should be 1.98:1

It not definitely is NOT a Ford 2.3.

Sounds like you've got an intermittent connection in the power circuit. Check the fuse in the key circuit and the connections on the back of the key switch. You're looking for something that would cause a bad connection, like a corroded fuse holder or a bad solder joint, or a dirty connecting lug. Probably in the instrument loom, but don't ignore the main battery lead connections on the starter motor and the negative lead from the battery to the engine block....

Ok.. Look at the connections on the starter motor and engine block first....

It doesnt spit and sputter before it cuts out it just goes. Then theres no power to the coil or plugs till it cools down. And the tack with engine off gos crazy back and forth from 3 to 5k rpms...
