Made an appointment with a marine mechanic to do a final inspection before I buy... they quoted me $170 to check it all out and compression test it. I think its worth it if nothing else but peace of mind.

whale tale i think, but what's it mean?

They are notorious for causing handling problems. It needs to come off. The pulling MAY go away then. It will likely not get as good of a "hole shot", but that is fixable with Smart Tabs. Smart Tabs (or any tabs) are a much better solution that a whale tail.

Congrats and hopefully it all checks out from the mechanic. $170 would be well spent.

If the deal goes thru you should definitely pull that hydrofoil. They have caused a great deal of handling problems as mentioned, and instaling some Nauticus smart tabs is a way easy job; will give you some experience working on your new rig. They list for around $120 and make a world of difference. I have had them on my last two boats.

Good luck, keep us posted! :)

That indeed looks like a nice boat. Hope it works out.

I agree with the others about the foil. It looks like it has a nice SS prop on it, and that could be adding to the pull.

I have a foil on mine and it has the same pulling problems. I have adjusted the fin and it has made it better, but I still have the slight pull. It also tends to wander a little. I will be pulling the foil and installing tabs this winter when I pull the engine (rear mail oil seal leaking ).

I'll probably go with the smart tabs during the down time in the winter... I've got about a month left of decent weather before I got to put her away and I'm going to use it!

Congrats!!

That thing looks super clean for its age. Very sharp rig!

The Hydrofoil is 4 bolts.Pull it off and see what it does for the handling.
I bet it fixes the pull.
It may get on plane just a tad bit slower but should steer better.

The Smart Tabs would do very good on that boat.
Pretty much the same hull design as the StarCraft i used to own.
It had a foil on it and was terrible to steer at high speed.
I romoved it and problem solved.I added Smart Tabs a few months later and loved them.
I have to buy a set for my other boat now..;)

Whens the first solo run?:D

Man, You came out so much better on this boat than the older Bayliner you looked at first..Good Job!

Well I took it to the mechanic and its a no go. The hull is completely rotted out and I was advised to pass. Back to the drawing board...

Sorry it didn't work out but if its advised to pass, better now than later. Unless.... you're looking for a restoration project and he'll drop the price several grand..:)

Man that sucks!! This one really confirms that I will never buy a fiberglass boat. It sure looked like a gem.

With them being '80s boats, check again for stringer/deck rot. It is very common in these years.

If you can go up in price, stick with something built after 94. Most builders started to use all composite then, and it solves a lot of the rot issues.

Man that sucks the other one had rot.It was a super clean boat too...

The one with the fiberglass deck could still be wood under it.
Probably a wood transom too.

At least you know now what to look for in boats in that age range.

Keep looking, you will find a good one.
