Re: 1995 Crownline 210 CCR Deck Repair

Agreed Lipp. Tis' easier to clean peal one finger at a time than 2 fingers at once.
I'm hoping i've made my final big purchases yesterday. I picked up more epoxy resin and hardener, 3 gallons of poly resin (for the top side of the deck) and a couple of other little nick-nacks. I'm waiting anxiously on my 32 linear feet of cloth and biax to show up.

My wife let me have some me time after work yesterday so i put a coat of resin on the stringers for the starboard side. I'll coat them again this afternoon. The port side stringers should be set up pretty well by this afternoon (the adhesive) so i'll sheck those to... and maybe even take some pictures...LOL!

I don't know that i'll get much done this weekend because of Easter and travelling to in-laws (and out-laws) houses. But hey, it's a good reason not to work on it right. Time to celebrate something bigger than ourselves.

Side note: I don't think i've mentioned this yet, but all of the cockpit upholstery is being re-done and the work so far is absolutely GORGEOUS! I'm having to completely rebuild the side portions (gunwales) before they can be reupholstered so that's taking a little time but the results will be awesome.

I've also decided to add a couple 10" subs, a Polk audio sub amp (marine compatible) a new Sony head unit, and a couple more 6 1/2" speakers for the rear of the cockpit.... you know, since everything is torn up anyway.

Thank goodness for tax return checks and my 2 little deductions that make it all possible.LOL!

Re: 1995 Crownline 210 CCR Deck Repair

So, i recieved my fiberglass cloth and biax today. Pulled the package in the house and said "wow, this is heavy stuff for 32 feet of cloth". As it turns out, sometimes i get in a rush and don't read THOROUGHLY. Lets just say I have ALOT more biax than i needed. I thought the sale was in feet, turns out it was in yards and i ordered 16 of 'em.
So... know anyone that needs some 1708 biax?
Can't help but laugh at myself. I hope you get a kick out of this as well.

I bet you go through all of it. I purchased a 145 pound roll and I do not think I have enough. I think that is close to 60 yards

Keep giving us pictures. I've got a 97 Crownline 210CCR, and I need the documentation, in case I ever get a wild hair, and go looking for problems.

Re: 1995 Crownline 210 CCR Deck Repair

Ok folks, here are a few pictures. Port side stringers are in place with some PL adhesive. Where the larger gaps between the hull and stringers are, i will be using a peanut butter epoxy mixture to get everything attached and rounded before applying cloth. Note the nice little pvc pipe used for the limber holing. 1" pipe cut 1" long sealed with PL...
I also put the first coat of epoxy on the stringers for the starboard side. Those will go in this week. The 2x2 pieces are some pressure treated that i will be adding into the port side for attachment points for the new deck. All of those were epoxied as well.

More pics to come as more work gets done!
Keep in mind, this is literally a shade tree job as i have no garage and only a little shed (full of my sons toys) to work out of.

Re: 1995 Crownline 210 CCR Deck Repair

You know, I see all these repair threads around, and I've noticed no one uses treated lumber or plywood. Any particular reason? Is it too wet? Or is it the chemicals will prevent bonding with the glass? Just curious, as treated lumber is specifically treated to prevent rot...

Re: 1995 Crownline 210 CCR Deck Repair

Glassing over wood has pretty much the same effect whether or not the wood is pressure treated, marine grade, or exterior grade... That is, if i'm not mistaken. The main concern is that the wood be free of voids in between the layers of ply. It has some to do with cost savings as well... if you're going to have the same end result, why pay more for the pressure treated or marine grade. Also with treated wood, ANY fasteners or hardware you attach to it MUST be stainless or it will corrode from the treatment used on the wood.

At least that's my understanding of it...

This is a great thread for me. i am starting this project in the next couple of weeks and am dreading that one of my stringers are bad. Was your entire stringer bad or was only part of it rotted away? I guess you cannot just cut half a stringer out and tie into it? You are doing good work for someone who had no prior knowledge. Keep it up! I will be following. You have inspired me!

Re: 1995 Crownline 210 CCR Deck Repair

Wow! Thanks Matt! Just remember this.... If I can do it, most anyone with any sense can do it as well. I am by no means as knowledgable as the more experienced folks on here. All i can tell you is read everything you can read before you start your work.

Mine started as a simple soft spot in the floor repair but i found a large amount of problems once i started pulling up the deck. I'd say about 60% of my stringers were rotten to the point of falling apart within the fiberglass they were encased in. Once i started pulling out rotten spots, i found that most of the stringers were at least waterlogged where they joined the hull. If you see that, your best bet (in my opinion) is to cut the whole thing out and start over. If i new how to post links to other iboats projects, there are alot of great builds on here that are by FAR more extensive than mine.

There is a great thread on working with fiberglass, types of fiberglass, gelcoat, etc. at the start of the boat restoration forum. I highly recommend it as a must read.

With this weekends wonderful forecast, I'll be spending alot of time on the project this weekend. I'll keep posting pics as quickly as i can (if i remember to take them).

Though i didn't get as much done as i wanted to, there was still a good bit of work accomplished. I got all the stringers in and worked some fillet magic to get everything bunded to the hull and new stringers to old stringers. One thing i found out, if your fillet mixture isn't just right, it runs everywhere instead of staying where you want it. Lesson learned after the first couple of tries.

Stringers on the port side got a treatment of cloth and epoxy for additional bonding as well. I dont have pics of that to post yet... but i will. Everything looks to be turning out well. I just wish there was more time in a day sometimes. I had to stop glassing stringers when my wife pulled up with a serious honey-do. She thought today would be a good day to purchase and build that new swingset for my 3 year old.

Needless to say, the boat took a back seat to swingset building. But hey, at least it's built and i don't have to do it next weekend.

No, not yet. I'll put one up later. I didn't think about pictures because i was more concerned with my son busting his rear falling off the swing his first time on by himself. Just like his daddy... risk-taker and clutz are not a good combination. He'll figure it out in good time. He also took a dive of of the swim platform of my boat yesterday when he was trying to "help" me with the glassing. He's ok, solid as a rock.

Lots accomplished this weekend... Got the stringers on the port side finished, stringers on the starboard aide are almost done. Problem is, i ran out of the pre-packaged 6oz cloth doing the port side so i switched to the biax. The biax uses ALOT, and i mean ALOT more epoxy than the 60z cloth... so, i'm out of epoxy AGAIN. Heading to West Marine tomorrow to pick up another gallon.

And as you can see in the previous post, i had my little buddy help me get the deck cut and fit. I also got to put 2 coats of epoxy on the underside before the rain came yesterday. So, what's next???

Well, finish starboard stringers, put in floatation foam, put on the deck, glass it, then paint it. Seems like i'm making real progress now.

Sorry, still no pics of the swingset... LOL!

Looking great! You will be on the water in no time. I got to play with some epoxy today on my boat. Check out my thread and you can see my Chinese jigsaw puzzle of a clamp apparatus. Fun times.
