In this area this is where the rear section of deck gets attached. It was bolt and nutted originally. I added a pbed piece of aluminum and figure I can pre drill and just use stainless screws int aluminum. P7190006_zpsn1jwl466.jpg

So I figured I better finish these impact cracks. On the inside of the hull I I ground them out

Then put 3 layers of 17oz and epoxy P3030005_zpsecxmj3jx.jpgP3030006_zpskql9r31j.jpgP4040001_zpstuvt4aea.jpg and then I filled the strake with epoxy fiberglass

Thanks sphelps. But I meant the 2 layers of chopped strand and 1 layer of 6 oz ha-ha probably should of been more specific

Epoxy on the inside vinyl ester on the outside. For the most part from the outside I am attached to original poly where you see the yellow under the layups is epoxy from the inside

Minch, for sanding and fairing, IMHO, you should always finish with CSM. The fibers in the Fabric/Cloth won't sand very well. The CSM kinda dissolves in the resin and will sand nicely so I always put down a couple of layers of CSM over the Fabric. I even try to grind/sand it a bit low and then fill it with some fairing material to ensure it all sands and fairs easily.

I see what you mean. will it hurt to be fabric other then cosmetically? these areas are under the water line and will be covered by bottom paint.
Also in my haste I did use vinyl ester on the outside and epoxy in the inside. There is a couple areas in each patch that the 2 come in contact with each other (the yellow areas of the patches) do you think will creat a issue? Thanks for the help!!!

Hmm, Yeah well they are not very compatible sooo there could be but if enuf of the VE has contact with enuf FG on the outside of the hull it will prolly adhere ok. Did you do some good sanding and prep work prior to the VE work?? Wipe down with Lots of ACetone? I'd go ahead and grind the fabric down a bit and if the fibers "Fluff" on ya just dab some resin on em and then use some fairing material over the area. If you don't I fear the texture of the fabric will bleed thru the paint and not look real attractive. It's your call.

Point takin I will sand off the vinyl ester and redo with epoxy. I know you don't use csm with epoxy so what would the proper way to finsh this?

If the point of contact between the two is not that much it may be ok. There should be quite a bit of contact between the VE and the glass on the outside as well. I suspect more of that than the contact between the epoxy and the VE. If that's the case then it will probably be ok IF the prep was good. Only you know that. If you are skeptical then yeah, you should probably do a "Do Over"

With epoxy use 2-3 layers of 3oz fabric. The resin will fill it's pores and it'll be smooth as silk. That's what the canoe guys use and you can't tell there's any glass on the conoe!!!

the only reason I used ve was figuring I would gel coat the patches to match the hull, But now that I realize the patches will be under the bottom paint and I have to sand down the patch ant way I might as well use the epoxy
