Re: Update 4-18-2011

Thanks for the info on the transom saver. Did you use one on the bottom mounting bolts also? I'm thinking of one for the top and one for the bottom. I'm also going to miss your posts. I hope you'll take on another boat project. Maybe a 20'-21' center console!

Re: Update 4-18-2011

No I did not use one on the bottom bolts. I have my fish well pump mounted to the transom between the bolt locations. But if that was not there I would have used it.

As to another project, fun you should mention that. I talked to the wife last night, asking if she still wanted to upgrade to a 23 ft'r. If one come available in a drive to location I'll have my next project for next winter. If not it is a go cart and mini bike restoration for the kids.

Update 4-19-2011

Update 4-19-2011

Well In got into that nasty rub rail last night after trying to change out the flex line on my dads pickup. We wont go there on the pick up because I am a bit pissed about the lack of getting the right part out of an autoparts store for the truck after detailing what I had and what I wanted. Goes to show you that getting good help is hard thing to do these days.

Anyways That rub rail had some very nasty stuff growing on it. Something greenish. Scrubbed it all off with a regular scotch brite and then rinsed off with the hose. Still need to take a medium grit scotch brite flap wheel to it to clean off the faded/bleached film on it tonight. Then a nice MEK wipe down. It will look like new when I am done. The MEK sort of melts the plastic when it is wiped with it. Just dose not clean off the faded part. I was also able to take a wire wheel in the electric drill and clean off all the old silicone off the aluminum inserts. They look brand new now.

Hopefully tonight I will get it installed on the boat. Weather depending of coarse. Then it is only the motor parts (money) I am waiting on to finish the boat. I'll start halling up all the crap (safety equipemnt and accessories) for boat and wipe them down before filling the boat up again for the fist time out. Also need to still go through the trailer and souble check everything.

Here are some pic I promised yesterday for the kicker bracket installed.

So the end is near!

Looks very nice. Are you planning an EZ Steer type of setup for steering your kicker or something like that?

Re: Update 4-19-2011

Actually I have the steering set pretty tight. So I just set it straight or close to and the steerin with the big motor as a rudder. It work pretty will. But I need to clarify that I troll with the waves when I fish.

I try to go with the flow as they say when ever possible.

Update 4-21-2011

Update 4-21-2011

Well have been slowly working on the boat and the final little things that need to be done. I did finish the rub rail and insert clean up. They came out very nicely. That MEK sure makes them look new. Holding off on installing it until after I get my buddy Micro Hands over to finish the hand rail installation. No need in ripping his hands apart with all the screws from the rub rail in the way.

Also last night pull the bearings from the trailer. They need to be replaced badly. I hope everyone disassebles their bearings, cleans with varsol, and repacks them at least every year. This is reguardless if you have bearing buddies or not. As soon as water gets in that hub the bearings are going to be toast real soon. Mine where severly pitted and rusted just after one year of use. Also I am not in salt water either, but fresh water. That salt must destroy bearings awfully quick. So I'm out looking for these odd size bearings today. Also looked at the tires and they need to be replaced. The dry rot is starting to get really bad. No need to be chaning a tire on the side of a busy road this year.

So this weekend the following needs to be done to finish off the boat project:

-Check wiring/lights in the trailer
-Finish the bearing replacement
-Grease bal socket on tongue of trailer
-Check hydralic fluid in brake system on trailer
-Replace crank strap on trailer
-Check bunks on trailer for rot
-Fix trailer jack (straighten it)

On the boat:
-Replace power packs
-Replace coils
-Do a link and sync
-Double check timing (WOT)
-Finish Install of hand rail
-Install rub rail
-Change kick impeller
-Double check all electrical systems on boat
-Load safety gear on boat
-Buy prop and fill the boat up with gas

The short lsit is getting smaller every day!!!!!!

Update 4-22-2011

Update 4-22-2011

Was able to go throught the trailer yesterday here. I bought new bearings repacked and installed. Then moved on to the electrical system check. Found both back light blown. The bulbs where poped. Need to start unpluging before backing into water. Also found a couple of rat nested wire connections from the previous owner. I hate electrical connections. Especially if there is four but connector connections in a r row at the light. Just a recipe for disaster. So I fixed them. Then mounted the spare to the trailer.

So the trailer is done and ready to go. Only need to replace the front strap in the hand crank. Also want to replace the bunks this summer when the boat is off.

So things left to do if getting short by the day. But not this day. Fanily coming in from out of town for the anual fish fry. A way of emptying the fish from the freezer from last year before starting this years fishing season!

So tonight I might start going over safety equipment and start testing the boats electrical system as a double check. I am going to be soo drunk when this thing is done!

Update 4-25-2011

Update 4-25-2011

Well we are almost ready. Was able to finish a ton of stuff this weekend and My parts came in today for the big motor and little motor so there is nothing stopping me from starting them up either today or tomorrow.

This weekend I finished the hadn rail installation. Also was able to install the rub rail and insert. Ran out of silicon adhesive. So still need to finish the sealling on the rub rail's lower edge.

Was also able to sort, clean and load all my safety equipment. Also was able to pull from the basement all my fishing equipment after throughly cleaning the garage.

Was also able to do the linc and sinc on the big motor. Like I said earlier the two ne power packs and six coils have come in so I can install them tonight. Alos the impeller came in so that can be installed tonight.

So what is left is install the front crank strap, and test the big motor and kicker in driveway.

The wife has even given me the approval to gas it up and buy the prop. So we are two stepps from finishing this project!!!!!! Finally. Might be a party this weekend to celebrate!!!!!!!

Re: Update 4-25-2011

Well last night was the night. Fired up the new/rebuilt big boy motor for the first time last night and celebrated. Only ran it for 10-15minutes. Had a few issues but everything is good now. Only need to start it up again and check the idle timing. But the motor runs great!

Also was able to change the impeller in the kicker and start that one up. Just need to get and hook up the Controllking for the kicker.

So the only things left are finishing the silicon/adhesive on the rub rail, and gassing it up. Then we are full speed ahead!

Also need to sort out a few fishing tackle issues before the tournament season begins!

Update 05-07-2011

Update 05-07-2011

Well if you have been following the other threads I have been starting and updating you will know what is going on.

Here is a quick run down of it;

Had the motor out two to beark in and the runs good with a few minor issues. I tyhink I am being a bit picky, but here everyone wants there baby running its top. I had to swap out the prop once, I had a 14.3x21p and it was way too much. I had planing issues and the top speed was 46mph at 4300rpms. I dropped down to a 14.3x17p and the boat no longer struggles to get up on plane, and top speed is 45.7mph at 5300rpms. Seeing I am still in the breakin period with this motor I did not get a chance to play with the trim settings and stuff so that number might go up by a few mphs.

I have the following issues with the motor that I am correcting/figuring out. The first one is the temps are a bit high in the 2000-2500 rpm range. I am reworking the rework for the water control valve. Check out the thread for specifics. The other is I have a slight kick between 1500-2500rpms. Only after it is warm. So I changed out the power packs, had them already, and changed out one check valve that had come apart. Still need to water test it.

I also just picked up a few more goodies for the boat. I picked up a Controllking trolling speed set up for the kicker motor. Started installation on that last night. My kicker is a late 1980's Honda BF100 or 10hp long shaft. Also I bought a few fishing goodies for this years fishing season. I figure I'll be out fishing end of next week.

Things still need to be done are;

Finish sealling the rub rail with silicone
Finish Controll king setup
Need to shift the axel on the trailer, a bit to light on the tongue with the new motor weight
Need to get a perment tool box for the boat tools
Need to get some more minor fishing equipment for fishing season, (Never ends)

Then it is fishing season! For all you Detroiters and Windsorites, Walleyes are running in the river today. The temps are perfect for spawning. You'll get the 9-10 lb'ers. My boat is a bit big for hand lining in the river.

Update 05-26-2011

Update 05-26-2011

This is an update for everyone who is wondering what happened and how it came out.

Well the hull came out very nicely. Needs another coat of wax and buffing, but thats from the road salt this winter and I had to move the boat from my property. Nothing huge but the shine is off a bit. Also need to pic out a cover to keep the dirt and stuff off it. Starting to get pissed with having to wash it every week to get rid of the dirt stains.

As to the motor rebuilt, that came out very nicely. I have clocked 6 hrs on the new/rebuilt motor. Finally decided to go with a lower pitch prop to solve most of the mid range shuttering issues. A little disappointed with the motor over all. My old Forcde 120hp rang great through all ranges, but best in the 12-20 mph range. A bit under power but ran great until I scored a piston wall. The new 1987 225 Evinrude only get 39mph top end. For adding 100hp there was not much gain. I will admit that the higher pitch prop and some playing with the jets would help some, but still I expected more out of the bigger motor.

I'm actually thinking fixing up the force and putting it back on. The weight savings and the fuel savings would sure as hell make up for it. But that is another winter project for this winter.

The boat does fish extremely well, and is out of the hole like a gun shot. Very responsive. Biggest Walleye so far this summer is 8 lbs. But that is only one time out. Hope to get bigger this weekend.

Have not been running it much due to weather, work and the wife work scedual. But the Wife work sedual is coming to an end here in two weeks. I have a great wife, she is quiting her job so I can go fishing this summer. Talk about a great wife!!!! She going back this fall again.

I still have the following thing to finish up to make it complete;

Get full cover for drive way storage
Mount Bimni
Make front and side curtains for Bimini
Fix a couple spider cracks in the gelcoat, top and bottom
Change two tires, a bit of dry rot starting
Tune kicker speeds a bit. Trying to get down to 0.8mph when trolling.

Not much left as you can see.

Cleaning up the stainless was very easy. I used Never dull. That stuff works great for mid oxidation and cleaning. Works on everything as well, brass, chrome, stainless, etc...

I starting to layout my fishing plan for the summer, trying to find the big fish in Erie. But all this rain we are having and mud in the water is giving us a hard time to do the pre fishing. I have a good idea where they are. Thank god see the first derby is only theree weeks away. The tackle is all sorted and getting the finishing touches to it. My custom painted weights are almost done. Only have a few blades to paint and then we are off and running full throttle ahead!!!!

If anyone is on Lake Erie and hears Double "B" call sign. Thats me!

Re: 1991 Bayliner Trophy 2002 Transom Repair

Well just an update on how the boat is makingout half way through the Essex County / Lake Erie Tournoment/Derbyr Season. Though you guys woulk to know....

Not making out too good in the standings Derby wise. No placements in any of the tourneys. Only two so far that I have entered. In the middle of the second one right now. Day 4 of a 8 day Tourney. 25th Amherstburg AMA Sportsman Walleye Derby. Biggest fish so far this week is 7 lbs 13ozs. This event is the largest fish weight in for Womens, Mens, and Kids under 15. The 7 lb'r is my 8 year old doughters. My wife only got 5 lb 10ox live and release today. Everybody is struggling out in Wheatley/Erieau ontario to find a big one.

On other matters, the boat is running great. I have the feeling it is a bit over powered/over stern heavy. It takes a bit to get up on plane with the 225hp. But that is also with 4 people on the boat and two coolers of fish on the stern. Hell one cooler is a 120 qt full of water. It's my inpervised live well for this year. First project this winter is making a custom built in fiberglass livewell for keeping a nice Eye alive.

Also I am having a hell ov a time with my hand rail. The screws will just not stay tightened. Even with lock tight red 462. Any suggestions on this one would be great.

The other things that are going on are motor issues. One being the 225 lower unit has slightly milky oil after 4 days of hard use. Also my Honday BF100 kicker is dying a slow death. I have to change the oil every three days due to fuel diluting it. There is also another project this winter. Rebuild and rering it.

Also as to fuel economy it is looking better than I thought. Getting around 2.02 miles to US Gallon. SO it's not that hard on gas. Might actuyally be able to afford to run this thing all summer long. Just as long as I do not run full throttle.

I'll check back in on Sunday when the derby is done. Wish me luck!!!!!!

Re: 1991 Bayliner Trophy 2002 Transom Repair

Well just an update on the boat and Local derby that I have been trying to win since I was in my late teens.

The local Amherstburg Sportsmans Association Walleye Tournoment 2011 just finished it's week long event. I have been fishing everyday since June 24th, straight through to July 2nd. It has been great! The time spent in this past week with my wife and kids, all 4, and my dad on the boat have been some of the best times in my life. I'm not saying that previous times with buddies in past years have not been fun, but I have come to realize that times are way better when you look over and see you kids eye staring off at the rising sun at the crack of dawn running your boat at full throttle across the lake to your faivorite fishing hole. You realize that you are not only giving them an experience that they will remember for the rest of thier life but instilling a love of the water that I thought I could only have. Caughting fish also helps........

So back to the boat. The boat I thought I had a couple of issues with going it and half way throught. One being the lower unit oil was milky at the day before derby check up. Changed it out and swore that I would keep an eye on it. Well there is not problem with it. I drained it this weekend and no milkyness. Nice and clean as a whistle. The other one that poped up was the Honda kicker (BF100 1980ish) had gas in the oil at the half way mark of the derby. I ran that thing every day for 8-10hrs a day. I changed the oil to 10w40 oil like the manual says and swapped the prop that I hade on it to the original one and ther problem when away. After 5 more days of running it the same the oil has no gas in it. So I think the kicker prop I had for it was to much for it to handle. Other than these two things I did not have any other issues with the boat. Both motors ran great. I have a couple of rigging issues and weight distribution issues but those I'll work out over the winter. I also learned how to run the boat in different water conditions. From flat calm to 5-6 footers. The derby does not end is there are big waves. Only the speeds slow down!

As to the final results of the derby here they are;

My wife won 2nd womens live and release at 8lbs even
My daughter won 2nd place kids under 15, she is only 9, at 9lbs 3 ozs
I won the tourney at 11lbs 2 ozs live and release. It was the biggest fish caught.

My dad did not place with his fish of 6lbs 13ozs. Just too many 8 and 9lbr's weight'd in.

So me and my wife have decided to keep the boat for the next couple of years, 4-5, and then probably upgrade to the next size then due to the kids and space issues. So the list of things on the restore next are as follows;

1) Complete front to back canvas cover. Needs to be for both in the driveway and mooring.
2) Fix the gas guage. Stopped working the second day of the derby. Just been filling it up every day. Helps figure out burn rate.
3) Canvas top and curtains for running. Tied of getting soaked on the wrough days.
4) Fix the impact/stress cracks that I listed before. Winter project
5) Re gel the bottom, a bunk of chips and bubles on the botome. The boat has not been in the water for any great time just it needs to be redone. Winter project.
6) Replace side aluminum rails for traxx system. I am going to breask down and spend the money. Been using the Scotty gimbal three position system and it sucks. Not aall the strong of system.
7) Install a Big Jon panner board mast up front.
8) Put new bunks on the trailer. The old ones are starting to show their age.
9) Fixe the weak fish well lids. Starting to get soft in some spots.
10) Redoe all the seat cushions.
11) Creat table storage brackets in the cuddy. Like the newer models.

Well as I start getting into these items I'll keep on posting.
