Re: 1990 searay 220 DA 5.7L

I just put a new engine in Aug. I can get 4500, but rarely run over 3200. I get about 24mph (GPS) at that speed. Any more juice and the gas consumption goes WAY up. I dont see much increase in speed above 4000 RPM. I'm not sure what prop I have. This is my first yr with this boat and I keep in in the water. Will be bringing it home around the beginning of Nov.

I spend most of my time at a slow cruise of about 1200 RPM. Gas on the water is expensive and things have been a little tight this Summer.

A 350 that only sees 3900 rpm at full throttle is working quite hard. Higher rpm (not too high) won't hurt a motor but lugging it will. Try propping it to get 44-4500 rpm with 2 people and 1/2 water and fuel. It'll be quick on plane and won't be lugging.
Rock Hall, have a 'prop guy' look at yours (your prop that is). Your numbers would suggest it's cavitating at w.o.t. possibly due to a slightly bent blade?
A healthy 350 in a 22' boat should run 40 mph. My 240 Sundancer (5.0/305 mpi) tops out at 42.

Re: 1990 searay 220 DA 5.7L

thanks for the info. Since my last post, I've discovered that I might have a problem in one of the cylinders. Looks like there was some oil getting in. I found this problem on winterization, so I wont be addressing it till Spring. #1 plug was completley fouled. It could not have been firing at all. So that is the first item of business in the spring. The motor is under warranty, so it will be taken care of.

As for the prop, I pulled the drive for the Winter. I am going to replace the prop. It's pretty chewed up. I will have this one repaired and save it as a spare. I'm not sure of the size and pitch. Just havent had time to take a closer look. I will post the specs later. I might get a chance to mess with it this weekend yet. The whole drive housing needs some work. So that is my project for the winter. I already have things lined up to take a look at the engine in March.

I boat on the Chesapeake. This past Summer, we didnt see alot of calm water to get out and open it up. Not to mention the price of gas. I'm looking forward to getting these little problems fixed and having a great Summer of boating.

Re: 1990 searay 220 DA 5.7L

thanks magster , i dont know if i might have problem myself, but with a nwe marage ss prop at the end of the season i was getting about 32 miles per gps at about 4000 rpm with three guys and a tank of gas.

i pull all spark plugs and it seems some of the is too clean, so i dont know if i have a bad head gasket, the oil is not milky either.

boat gets on plain real easy, too.

guys who fish on my boat marvel on how the boat perform great but to me its still not doing what its sopose to do.

this spring i will have the mechanic do a leakdown test to see if i have a headgasket problem ect.

all i need is for the boat to get to at least 4400 rpm wot with two guys on board.

i hope this tread get going in the winter

Re: 1990 searay 220 DA 5.7L

Hello all, I am in Connecticut and have purchased a 1989 22 DA 4.3 4barrel 205 hp,The engine was a factory 175 HP 2 Barrel. The origonal owner had the carb and intake upgraded. I was impressed on the sea trial, about a 4 second plane, cruising speed at 3200 will be about 19-20 knots, no need to over prop, will need the power for the rough seas.
I really like the design of the boat and am having new canvas made (6' 3" new bars to allow for walking room) I have removed the bench seat, installed two swivel captain chairs....Ooh more room! I am on the tail end of a full transom replacement, I found it to be rotted during a trim tab cylinder replacement. The cylinders were not sealed well to the hull allowing water to enter, Also the drain plug area was not properly fiberglassed at the factory,
Ground out the foam filled boxes, engine stringers, and the entire transom wood. Relaminated and replaced reglassed and cut outdrive hole. I have lots of picks and advice, it has really turned out beutiful and better than new!
I look forward to hearing from you all and will share my progress!

Props are so important!
You need to be in proper range of efficiency (it doesn't matter what brand of boat).
Lower rpm does not mean better economy, it means lower vacuum signal and more fuel. Depending on the year of the engine, 350's... or any small chevy should see anywhere between 4500 and 5000 rpm at wot with a partial load.
A lot of dealers have a prop exchange where you can go try several different ones to get the 'right' one.
I just put mine back in the water for the season, I got 42.3 @ 4850 rpm.
Fun fun fun!

Does everyone have their 220s in the water? Just put ours in this past weekend and we are looking forward to a beautiful boating weekend on the bay.

I'm trying to figure out why my picture is no longer in my sig. All my settings show that it should be there. What changed?

Re: 1990 searay 220 DA 5.7L

I figured out the avatar.
Got the boat out for it's first good run on Sat. clean bottom, new paint.
New plugs and wires. Rebuilt prop. 2 new batteries. It's never run better. Cruises on plane at 22mph, 3100 RPM and about 9 gph. much better than last year. I guess that new engine helps. My bottom was pretty bad by the end of the season. Hopefully the new paint will do a better job. I also stripped the drive and painted with anti-fouling.

The water was pretty calm this weekend. Temp was scorching inland. We slept on the boat all weekend and it was pleasant.

How did everyone else do?

I dont think mine will go that fast, but I never see water that flat either. What prop do you run?

We don't see water like that very often either :)
I'll take it when I can get it!
I think my duo-props are 22" pitch and the drive gearing is 2.20-1.

Just back. What a day. Turns over first crank. Super clean. Solid boat. I think I'm in love and sunburnt. All is good.

Cheers
