Re: 1990 searay 220 DA 5.7L

Started the engine today. Started right up and sounds real good. Might have a starter problem. Seems to be some tight spots on the starter and have to hit the key a few times to get it to turn. Thats the same thing that was wrong with my last I/O. Never fixed, just lived with it. But then I was younger and more daring back then.

Thanks for the advise Jim. For a 22', this is a big boat. I'm coming from a 14' with a 25hp tiller control. But, I did have a 21' years back. This boat seems huge compared to that one.

I discovered a bad shifter bellows that needs to be fixed before launch. Hopefully, I can get it into the shop this week. Going to have the shop just give a once over also, make sure everything looks and sounds right. Hopefully I'll be in the water in 3 weeks or less.

Mark

I dont have the guts to try anything new with this boat. Havent even had it in the water yet. After a season or 2 I'll venture into some more involved repairs. Launch is in 2 weeks.

Went down to the Bay today to hang out a little. Checked out some of the other boats in the marina. Then helped my friend move his sailboat to another slip. Felt great to get back on the water.

Mark

Going to launch my 220 DA on Friday. Can't wait. Going to put the hammer on some of those Lake Erie walleyes. Finally got a digital camera so I can post some pics.

Re: 1990 searay 220 DA 5.7L

Since this thread came back to life, here's my latest update. I was getting ready to put the boat in the water and saw that the shift bellows was shot. So rather than attempt the repair myself and quite possibly make a small problem worse, I took it to the shop. They got right on the job but it appears that the previous owner must have run the boat with the bad bellows. Gimble Bearing, shift cable and about $600 worth of other parts had gotten wet and needed replaced. So, paid the bill today. The good thing is that all this was caught before I dropped it in the water. Probably wouldnt have lasted an hour and I would have been looking for a tow and the repirs would have been much worse.

Anyway, gonna put a new coat of bottom paint on Friday morning. Now the only last detail is finding a way to get the boat to the marina, 100 miles from here.

Mark

Re: 1990 searay 220 DA 5.7L

Just got my 1989 220DA with a 260hp 5.7. Cruising at around 26 at 3000 RPM, topping out at 38 at 4000. I've heard that maybe the fact that I only get to 4000 RPM wide open could be a problem...and thoughts?

Well.
I get about 22 @ 3200 RPM, I get about 4300 or so at WOT, but the boat doesnt go much faster over a bout 3900. I'm guessing you have more prop than me. I think my boat will only do about 33-34 mph. It's kind of hard to say because I boat in the Chesapeake and am always dealing with Tides and wind, not to mention always at least a little chop. I did hook up a Fuel Flo meter last weekend. I burn about 9GPH at 3300 RPM and about 23MPH.

Mark

Hi guys....just joined the forum....I have a '90 220da (5.7 merc A1) I bought in April.....love the boat.....have added an extra bench seat and installed a new CD player with a powered sub woofer....just back from Lake Cumberland in KY....put over 120 miles on the GPS...boat performed great with 7people on board..I am getting about the same performance numbers as you all ( 24mph at 3000 rpm..35mph at 4200rpm)....have a stainless prop and a hydrafoil.....Dave.

Re: 1990 searay 220 DA 5.7L

ok guys my 1989 searay 220 .

right now i am running a 17 pitch ss prop my wot is about 4100 rpm at 34 miles per hour gps. .i think i need to put back 15 pitch ss to get me to my engine wot which is i think 4600 .

i might lost a little top end speed but i get on plane at 2500 rpm, and when i hit about 3800 rmp i was doing about 33 miles per and the engine sound more sweet . so guys the prop that gets you the 4600 wot is the right prop. remember the engine is not new anymore. so it dosent has that strong power any more.

also please post what size prop you are currently running, so others can troubleshoot.

but for those who dosent get the correct wot need to get the right prop that does. even if you have to go down to a 15x15 like i did, the engine will love it.

keep us up to date on this thanks . 220 da rules

Re: 1990 searay 220 DA 5.7L

Just repowered my 89 220DA with a Jasper 350 w/roller cam. Still in break-in. Does seem to have a little more juice, but havent run it over 2000RPM. Hopefully after this weekend, I can start bringing her up on plane and see if the performance has changed. We are probably going to do a slow weekend cruise down the Bay 20 miles or so. That should just about complete the break-in.

Re: 1990 searay 220 DA 5.7L

Not real sure what happened. overheated. stopped too quick maybe. engine ingested lots of water, saltwater.
New engine is running great. Installation cost me more than I expected, but thats boating.

No cracks in the castings. I replaced the manifolds. Might have been a problem there too.

New engine is much stronger. Havent really opened it up WOT yet. The bay has been a little rough lately and the rest of the family doesnt like high speeds on rough water.

Re: 1990 searay 220 DA 5.7L

Well boys, after buying a nice GPS I'm getting some much different speeds than I was getting from the on-board speedometer...

I have a 14.5 inch, 17 pitch prop. I'm getting 29mph or so at 3000 RPM and about 41mph at WOT at 4400 RPM. Let me just say I love this boat! Handles the bay chop well, tons of room for a 23 foot boat, and fishes well without the rear bench. Now to just spend the money and get some decent canvas...

I'm with you Bolo. Dont think my boat will do much over 30 mph. Havent had much calm water this year to try it.
